Sunday Series - Reigning in Life - A Good Ruler

Pastor Stephen Hecht's text was I Timothy 5:17, "Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine." His question was: "What makes a good ruler?"

1. The responsibilities of a king/ruler - I Samuel 8:20

A) Minimize external threats.

B) Maximize internal resources (people, money, etc.).

C) Administer justice.

2. In the area of ruling and having dominion, where has most of our focus been?

Minimizing external threats - dealing with temptation, attacks from the enemy.

3. Is there a true #1 responsibility?

There is no right answer to this question. It depends on the current situation. Where is the greatest need?

4. When Saul became king, what did he do first?

Minimized the external threat of the Philistines.

5. David spent a lot of time expanding the kingdom and increasing monetary resources, but he left himself open to criticism in the area of justice.

6. Where was Solomon's focus? Maximizing internal resources.

7. If we are going to be a good ruler, we must manage and re-prioritize each area as needed.

Special Note: Luke 4:13 - The temptation ended, and the enemy left Jesus for a season. If you focus on one area, others get neglected/weaker.
