Sunday Morning Series - Enduring Change - The Root of Bitterness

Text:  I Samuel 18:1-30

Saul was anointed as king of Israel by God and given an assignment. He was to defeat the Philistines and wipe out the last of the giants. God brought people alongside to help him  accomplish the calling on his life.

At first, Saul developed a strong bond with David. However, things changed  when he heard the people singing about how Saul killed thousands but David killed ten thousands. Saul felt threatened and began watching David with a suspicious eye. The enemy started whispering lies to him, causing bitterness, distrust, and division.

Saul's actions eventually resulted in God removing his anointing on him and putting it on David. Once the accuser's words become part of our beliefs and we continue to meditate upon them, our thoughts turn to actions. While David played soothing music for him, Saul throws a spear with the intent to kill him. This occurs a second time.
