Men's Night Out

Friday, May 7th (or Saturday, May 8th) is the next scheduled Men's Night Out. We thought this would be a good month for a movie night. So many enjoyed Iron Man when we saw that. The new one opens the 1st weekend of May. There is also waiting a week to catch the latest remake of Robin Hood.

Please contact Pastor Steve of Keith with your input regarding which night is better for you.

Sunday Morning Series - And God Gave Gifts to Men - Two Kinds of Hope

Text: Hebrews 10:23 & I Peter 1:3-9

What is hope? As we've said in past lessons, hope is something future. We don't hope for what we already have.

We strengthen our hope by thinking on the things we expect. (Philippians 4:8) We can think about the good things listed in the scripture or negative things. It's our choice. Unfortunately, if we allow a bad thought to occupy us, it's like eating potatoe chips. You can't eat just one. One unhealthy, negative thought brings all its buddies along with it.

Hope that is not renewed is forgotten or faded. Chewing on the good things of God's Word keeps it in the forefront of our mind and heart. It leaves no room for the negative.

The bad type of hope comes from the world. How do you know if you have this type or the good kind of hope? Worldly hope is based on fear and produces expectation of destruction, disruption, disturbance, and is detrimental. A few examples in scripture admonishing someone to not fear are: Luke 1:13, 30, Luke 2:10, Luke 5:10, Luke 8:50, Luke 12:7, and Luke 12:32. There are many more. Get rid of the fear.

Godly hope comes from the Word of God. It is based on faith not fear. Its fruit is beneficial, helpful, gainful, profitable, useful, pleasant, and good.

Why would you want to live life in fear, being depressed? Talk about God's blessings and say what He says. According to I Peter 1:3-9:

1) We are begotten unto a lively hope.

2) We are heirs.

3) We are kept by the power of God.

4) We are receiving the end of our faith, even the salvation of our souls.

Sunday Morning Series - Hope That Does Not Waver - How Did I Get Into This?

Text: Isaiah 51

God tells us the barren will produce, and what was wilderness will be like Eden. Verses 7-8 exhort us not to fear. Fear is a corrupted form of hope. Both of them are future.

Verses 9-16 give several strong directions:

1) Awake and put on strength. We're asked if we were the ones who dried up the sea. Recall what God has done in the past, and recognize there is no one greater.

2) Sing, be joyful instead of complaining. Fearful people don't sing. They scream and cry out.

3) Don't throw away your confidence.

4) Endure difficulty. "We are not the shrinking-back kind!"

To often we embrace sorrow and mourning. Don't feed them. They'll hang around like a stray cat that you continually feed.

Sunday Morning Series - Hope That Does Not Waver - The Contamination of Our Hope

Text: Philippians 4:6-7

Hope can be contaminated by worry or fear.

What are we responsible to do to protect our hope? Let's take a look.

1) I Peter 5:7 - SEND. Let our petitions be made known to God.

2) Matthew 6:25-34 - STOP. Don't worry or be troubled.

3) John 14:1 & 27, Colossians 3:15 - STAY. Don't let go of our hope. Stay in the peace of God.

No one can do these things for us. They are our assignments.

What God Does:

1) Psalm 4:8 - He keeps us safe.

2) Isaiah 26:3 - He keeps us in perfect peace.

3) Philippians 4:19 - He fully supplies.

The Results:

1) Prov. 3:24 - Our sleep will be sweet.

2) Psalm 119:165 - Nothing shall make them stumble.

3) Psalm 91:1,2 - He is our refuge and fortress.

If we allow the contamination of the world in, we change the nature of our hope. We begin to hope for something other than the promises of God. According to Romans 8:6 - to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. If I don't see the promised results, there must be a contamination somewhere.

To get rid of the contamination, several things are needed:

1) Illumination - find out what's holding me back by going into the Word of God.

2) Segregation - separate that which is foreign from what we want - worries, fears, anxieties.

3) Determination - not easy, but stay the course no matter what the circumstances.

Resurrection Sunday - 2010

Text: John 13:1-17

Before the feast of Passover, Jesus knew His hour had come. He not only knew His betrayer was at hand, but also his identity. Surprise was not an element in His life. Jesus knew His purpose, that He had come from God, and was going back to God.

In this text Jesus and the disciples are celebrating the Passover. No one hosted this Seder, so there were no servants to perform the lowly task of washing the disciples' feet. Jesus stunned His followers by getting a basin and towel and washing their feet.

Peter, ever the outspoken one, objects, but Jesus tells him he must be washed or he cannot have part in Him. He then goes to the other extreme, telling Jesus to wash his face and hands as well. The Lord calms him down, saying it's not necessary. Only his feet need to be washed.

Jesus told Peter he wouldn't understand what was happening now, but he would later. This was an odd thing to say because foot washing was a common practice. However, Jesus was using this as an object lesson, which would stick in their minds.

Peter wasn't the only one to have his feet washed. Even Judas, the betrayer, had his feet washed in spite of the fact he was about to commit the most heinous deed imaginable. We get hung up on imitating Jesus' actions instead of understanding His intent. Jesus was giving Judas an opportunity for restoration, but Judas didn't take it.

To hear the entire message, check out the Sermon Player at our website. This small space cannot begin to contain the fullness of the teaching. We pray you and your loved ones enjoyed Resurrection Sunday.
