National Back to Church Sunday - How to be Against

Text:  2 Thessalonians 2:1-2

How do we come against the enemy of our faith and against the things satan endeavors to send our way? What are his tactics?

When our enemy wants to get to us, he plants a thought in our minds. These thoughts are based on:

1) Current events
2) Past events
3) Expected events (worry)

    a) They come from reports
    b) Imaginations

Often, reports are twisted to lead one to an obvious conclusion.

2 Thessalonians 2:1-2 tells us not to be troubled: by word, spirit, or by letter. At that time, they were experiencing severe persecution. Someone wrote them a letter under Paul's name and declared he'd been wrong and they were indeed in the Tribulation. Paul writes 2 Thessalonians to correct that error.

Jesus used words, scripture, and called for results when faced with temptation or wrong. When Peter rebuked Jesus for saying He'd die and be resurrected, Jesus did not allow that thought to be sowed into His mind. He immediately rejected it.

No matter how great the enemy's weapons appear, our weapons are far more powerful. Dealing with him using past experience or advice from the world won't protect us. We combat his tactics by getting the Word down in our hearts.

If the enemy keeps getting you in a certain area, reinforce it with the Word of God. The weak spot will end up becoming your strongest area as you renew your mind with the Word.

Why Does God Let Bad Things Happen?

Text:  Luke 13:1-17

Why do bad things happen in this world? Let's identify some false assumptions:

1) Bad things happen to bad people
2) Bad things haven't happened to me, so I am good.
3) Because God is righteous, He always judges sin immediately.

The woman in Luke 13:1-17 has been bent over for 18 years. That's a long time. She certainly didn't want to be in that condition, and God didn't want her in that condition. In Verse 11 Jesus identifies the source of her problem: a spirit of infirmity. He casts it out, but she's still doubled over. Jesus laid hands on her, and she was made straight.

So, why was this woman and others like the man blind from birth bound for so long? Someone had to come against that situation. Jesus saw the woman with the infirmity and came against it. You, as a believer, are made to come against things. We're told in John 10:10 that it is the enemy who comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but Jesus comes to bring life.

Luke 13:16-17 - The woman is in the house of  God. You can be in the house of  God and still have problems. Remember the man who was let down from the roof in front of Jesus? Scripture tells us that the presence of God was there to heal all them in the household, but only that man received healing. God is not moved by:

Location
Need
Goodness

He's moved by faith.

Sunday Morning Series - Steady or Stubborn - Understanding the Lost

Text: Luke 15

Today, we'll look at 3 parables concerning those who are lost.

The Lost Sheep

Sheep are curious, distracted easily, and the new ones are unfamiliar with the Shepherd's voice. They wander off and get into trouble. The Shepherd leaves the ones who are safe and goes after the one who is in danger.

The Lost Coin

This item was mishandled. Perhaps it was put away for safekeeping, and then the owner forgot where they put it. A coin can neither know it is lost nor can it get itself back.

In this parable, there is a teaming up of:

1) The Holy Spirit (the lamp)
2) The woman (represents the church)

This parable shows the work of the Holy Spirit with the church toward the lost.

The Lost Son

Here the son deliberately and willfully goes against the father's will and becomes lost. He travels to a distant land away from the father's influence and watchful eye.

Notice the father did not run after the son. He waited until the son returned home. The son's willful abandonment of the father is like being alienated from the life of God. It is repentance, not perfection, that restores us to our former position.

The brother saw the prodigal son as a sinner, while the father saw him as a lost son.
