Quotable Quotes

"The word, 'question' originates from the Latin root, quaestio, which means 'to seek.' Inside the word 'question' is the word 'quest,' suggesting that within every question is an adventure, a pursuit which can lead us t hidden treasure." - TomWujec

Sunday Morning Series - Hear, Test, Believe - Questions The Enemy Wants You to Ask

Text:  John 6:15-71

John 6:15-40 - Some questions get us in trouble. Those that are based on:

1.  Fear, worry, anxiety
2.  Supposition
3.  Selfishness

Jesus sent the disciples away in a boat, but He didn't go with them. When He came to them walking on the water, they were afraid. They knew Jesus, but people don't walk on water. They assumed it must be a ghost. What we don't know makes us afraid. Jesus told them not to fear and reassured them it was indeed Him. They immediately arrived at their destination.

The people asked Him, "Rabbi, when did You come here?" What they wanted to ask was, "How did you get away from us?", but that probably wouldn't have been as socially acceptable. It's obvious from the story that they were keeping a watchful eye on Jesus.

Jesus identifies their new-found desire to stay with and follow Him. They liked the free meal. They then ask Him, "What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?" Did you know that believing in the Lord Jesus Christ is a work from God?"

They ask Him for a sign as proof and then bring up manna. Note: They'd just seen Him heal people, perform miracles, and feed so many. Jesus replies, "I am the bread which came down from heaven." The people don't understand because they're thinking of natural bread instead of spiritual bread.

Sunday Morning Series - Hear, Test, Believe - Questions The Enemy Wants You To Ask

Text:  Mark 4:35-41, Luke 10:38-42, Mark 8:11-21

The enemy wants us to ask questions that will open the door to fear. In Mark 4:38, the disciples asked, "Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?" Bad question. It was formulated from the platform of fear. Today, we might be asking God, "Why am I still sick? I've been standing on the Word."

Note: Jesus responded to the disciples four ways:

1.  He got up.
2.  He rebuked.
3.  He spoke.
4.  He asked them why they feared instead of having faith.

He never answered their question.

The purpose of fear is to bring doubt as to God's love by targeting our view of His concern, supply, purpose (plans).

In Luke 10:38-40, Martha is working and upset that Mary isn't helping her. She asks Jesus if He cared that Mary has left her alone. Jesus doesn't answer her question but says Mary has chosen the better part.

Sunday Morning Series - Hear, Test, Believe - Asking Good Questions

Text:  John 4:1-43

Jesus and the disciples arrive at the well in Samaria. He's tired and hungry, so he sits down to rest. The disciples go into the city to get food. Wisdom Tidbit #1 - What should you do if you're tired? Rest. Jesus did it, and it's okay.

A woman comes to draw water, and Jesus asks her if she'd draw some water for him. She doesn't reply, but questions the question. She wants to know why he, a Jew, is talking to her, a Samaritan woman. He makes a statement that if she knew who she was talking with she'd ask for the living water.

Ignorance leads to a question that is very limited. The answers given must fit in with the sphere of what I know and can accept. She's stuck thinking about natural water when Jesus is talking about spiritual things.

Our questions need to be born of knowledge and understanding. We must remove limits and distractions. If our perception is off, our revelation will be too. Don't just study the Word to get answers. Study the Word to get questions.

Sunday Morning Series - Hear, Test, Believe - Questions That Get God's Attention

Text:  Daniel 9:1-27

Many questions are being asked of God that He doesn't care about. They open the door for answers from another source.

We are not to test for truth. We're to test for the source of the answer. The devil can give you truth for the purpose of destruction. God gives us truth for the purpose of life.

When Jesus was with the Pharisees, He knew their thoughts. You cannot have a number of people having the same thoughts except from the same source. When we accept thoughts from a source other than God, they unpack such things as a critical spirit, distrust, anger, and hatred.

In Daniel 9:1-3, Daniel asks God a question. It came as a result of studying God's Word. Since faith comes from the Word of God, this question is born of faith. It's not, "How come this hasn't happened?" It's "What happens now?"

"Are we there yet?" The question has hidden qualities:

1.  Dissatisfaction with where I am.
2.  Ungrateful for the work done on my behalf.
3.  Impatient to get somewhere.

Our questions to God can take the form of, "Why haven't You healed me yet?" "Why is a new believer seeing answers to prayer and I'm not?"

We need to improve our questions. What if we changed, "Are we there yet?" to "How far are we driving? "How far have we gone?"

What qualities must our questions contain:

1.  Faith
2.  Patience (Hebrews 6:11)
3.  Contentment
4.  Thanksgiving

It's CONTENT NOT POSITION that gets our questions answered. Daniel was called, "greatly beloved," but Gabriel came because of Daniel's words.
