Sunday Morning Series - Learn to Discern - Put Me In Remembrance

Text:  Exodus  33. Isaiah 43:21-26

We've been studying the difference between good criticism and bad criticism (correction). Should we ever correct God?

While Moses and God were meeting on the mountain, the people were getting into trouble. God tells Moses to go down and deal with them. He refers to the people as those you brought out and your people. God declares He won't go with this people but will send an angel with them.

Moses remembers God's promises and word to him. He respectfully and courteously reminds God that this whole thing was His idea. These are His people, and He promised to go with them. The foundation of the correction was God's own words.

Sunday Morning Series - Learn to Discern - Is It Ever Right to Criticize?

Text:  Various

We an learn from the times God gave criticism/correction to those in service to Him. There's good criticism (correction) and bad criticism (correction). Let's look at three guiding principles:

1.  Foundation - Good criticism is based on God's Word and what He's spoken to you. Bad criticism is based on feelings.

2.  Function - Good criticism always has a purpose - either something to benefit you or a group you're with.

3.  Forum - Public, private, personal. The forum will always be lesser than where the problem occurs.

We will call this the what, why, and where.

Criticism Toward God

Numbers 21:4-7 - It would seem the Lord did not like this. The Israelites are criticizing Moses and God. When you get discouraged, you may end up finding fault with even the blessings of God. This type of criticism had no foundation in the Word, no beneficial purpose, and was done in the wrong forum (very public).

Criticism Toward Church Leaders

1.  Saul, David, and Solomon are examples of leaders who stop listening for a time. Leaders are called by God and are answerable to Him. God sent His prophets to correct them. This refers to those who are called by God to their positions of leadership.

2.  Self-appointed leaders, who are not under anyone's authority, do not come under this heading. Don't listen to them.

3.  Moses was criticized by Jethro and God.  Exodus 18:13-24 - Jethro observed how Moses sat daily hearing the people's questions/cases regarding the Law. In private, he not only told Moses he was wearing himself and the people out, but also gave him a solution. This passed all three tests of foundation (the Word of God), function/purpose - it was beneficial to all concerned, and forum - he spoke to Moses in private.

Sunday Morning Series - Learn to Discern - Speak What You Feel?

Text:  Genesis 32

There are 5 stages of Speech:

1.  Whatever I KNOW.
2.  Whatever I UNDERSTAND.
3.  Whatever I FEEL.
4.  Whatever I REASON.
5.  Whatever I HEAR.

Jacob is on his way back to his homeland with his wives, children, servants, and livestock. God has made promises to make him a great nation, but he's nervous because his brother vowed to kill him when his father died.

He sends a message to Esau via his servants, and the response isn't comforting. The servant tells him that Esau is coming to meet him with 400 men. Jacob is fearful and begins to speak out of those fears instead of focusing on what God has said about his future.

Don't put your faith where you have no Word to stand on. You'll be speaking out of your feelings not your belief.

He divides his group into two companies, so that one might get away if they're attacked. He then sends Esau gifts, each one greater than the previous one. Perhaps he is trying to demonstrate his new nature to his brother by showing him he would rather give than receive and serve instead of manipulate.

Jacob's major battle is not with Esau or Laban, but God. To hear the rest of the message, please go to our website, and click on the Listen Tab. You can listen online, download it to your MP3 player, or podcast FREE.
