Sunday Morning - Maintain What You Gain

Please forgive the lack of graphics. The blog administrator is having computer woes, and this is being done from the library.

Text: Various

The first thing to understand is that God wants us to grow. When we come into a new level in our walk, He is not the one to take it away.

In the Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:18-23), we see the conditions under which we lose:

1) If we don't understand what we received, the enemy takes it away.

2) Tribulation and Persecution come because of the Word, but for lack of root, endurance is minimal.

3)  The cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches causes a lack of fruit.

4) The only one who produced was the one who heard, understood, and became fruitful.

The deceit of the enemy:

1) Criticalness - what others do. Don't play the blame game.
2) Bitterness - what others do to me.
3) Meageress - Focus on what I lack rather than what I have.
4) Distress (Burdens) - What I carry.
5) Fearfulness - What I may lose.
6) Worthiness - What I did or didn't do (guilt)

Saul is a prime example of these qualities.

Simple Practices that Maintain What We Gain:

1) Edification - What I say about or to others. No corrupt word.
2) Generosity - What I do for others.
3) Blessing - Being thankful for what I've been given.
4) Selection - What has been entrusted to me by God.
5) Faith - What I will gain.
6) Worthiness - It's not based on my deserving something but rather on what Jesus has done.
7) Walk in love - Ephesians 5:1-2

We see David exhibiting these qualities.

Application: Guardt your words, thoughts, and actions. Keep them in line with what you have gained or where you want to be.

Special Speaker - Bro. Chris Palmer

Text: Various

We'll be looking at how to maintain our faith. The answer is you need continual fresh fillings of the Holy Spirit. Ways you can re-charge your spirit:

1) Ephesians 4:30 - Learn to respond to the Holy Spirit.

    A)  Don't grieve the Spirit.

    B)  Don't quench the Spirit.

Grieving - doing things He told you not to do. Sins of commission.

Quenching - Not doing things He told you to do.

2) Stay sensitive to the Holy Spirit by:

    A) Praying in the Spirit on a regular basis.

         a)  It edifies you. Why?

              1) I Corinth. 14:2 - When you pray in the Holy Spirit, you're speaking to God.

              2) We speak mysteries. The word, "mysteries," comes from the Greek word,
"mysterios," which are those bits of info given to the initiated.

              3) Without understanding, there's no edification. When you pray in the Holy Spirit,
He turns the mysterios into revelation.

Sunday Morning Series - Steady or Stubborn - Staying Focused in Turmoil

Text:  2 Kings 18  & 19

Hezekiah, King of Judah, came to the throne at 24 years of age and reigned for 29 years. He's viewed as the best king they had. As king, he tears down the idols in the land and restores true worship.

While Ahaz, King of Israel, submits to Assyria's demands for tribute, Hezekiah rebels. Soon after, he repents, and gives Assyria the equivalent of millions of dollars, including the treasures in the Temple.

The scripture does not give this timeline, but from accounts in II Chronicles 32:20-31and the information here, we can see a strong indication:

1) After he pays the tribute, Assyria pulls out of Judah's cities.

2) Hezekiah builds another wall and a tunnel to give the people access to water in the event of a siege.

3) The prophet, Isaiah, comes to Hezekiah and tells him he's going to die. He repents before the Lord, and he's given another 15 years.  (Note: This appears to happen after he pays off the Assyrians.)

4) He repents for submitting to the Assyrians.

5) Hezekiah forms a treaty with the Egyptians.

6) He once again rebels against the Assyrians.

The enemy comes back and tries to deceive the people of Judah. They speak their language, say that God sent them, and declare nothing can save them. Hezekiah receives the report of what's happening and brings it before the Lord. God tells him not to listen to their words. The angel of the Lord defeats the Assyrians, and their leader, Sennacherib, is assassinated by his sons while he's in the temple of his gods.

Application:  Who do you believe? By our decision, we can give permission to be deceived. So how do we tell the difference between deception and the truth? The Word of God doesn't bring fear unless there's judgment involved. Judgment is something we bring down upon our own heads when we turn away from God. If we're walking with God and words are striking fear in our hearts, the enemy is trying to deceive us and set a trap.

Sunday Morning Series - Steady or Stubborn - Focus in Turmoil

Text:  Exodus 13:17-14:20

Here we see the Israelites facing the Red Sea with mountains on either side and the Egyptian army behind them. To the Egyptians, the Israelites appear lost. To Israel, it appears Moses has lead them into a death trap.

Moses instructs them to, "Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord." The cloud separates them from the Egyptian forces, who are now in darkness, while the pillar of fire gives light to the Israelites.

After all the plagues in Egypt, you'd think the Egyptians would realize God had His hand on these people, and they wouldn't win. When the Israelites crossed over on dry ground, their enemies approached the water. They didn't even think twice about pursuing them. They marched right in, but something unusual happened. Their chariots began losing wheels, and slowed them down. Once the entire army is in the midst of the Red Sea, it closed over them.

What appeared to be a dire situation for the Israelites was really a trap for the Egyptian army. If they'd gone any other way, the army could have surrounded and captured them. Instead, they could only approach them from the rear. A path is made through the Red Sea for Moses and the people, but it becomes the instrument of the Egyptians' doom.

God gave Moses wisdom in the middle of terrible situation. He received that wisdom, and the nation was saved. When we're in turmoil, God is ready to give us His wisdom, but we have to be ready to receive it. If you reject the wisdom of God, it will go away. If you listen, wisdom will find you.

Sunday Morning Service - Steady or Stubborn - Stingy or Thrifty

Text:  Acts 4:32-35

In Verse 32, we're told the church at Jerusalem sold their possessions and had everything in common. Is this a pattern for us today? One thing we need to understand is that 25-30 years down the road, Rome made all the land they sold worthless. They were led by the Holy Spirit, and as a result did not suffer losses.

Barnabas sold land and gave the proceeds to help those in need and for the growth of God's kingdom. He did not sell his home. People honored and respected him for what he did.

Ananias and  Sapphira desired to help, but they also desired something else. Why were they judged so harshly? Is this inconsistent? By withholding part of the purchase price while giving the impression they were presenting the entire amount, their money became an accursed thing. We see this happening in Joshua 7.

Verse 4 says, "While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control?" Contrary to some teachings that God owns all we have, it's clearly stated that the money was theirs and in their control. The only exception to this is:

1)  The tithe, which belongs to God.

2)  Special assignments from God. We have a choice to submit to His authority when He tells us to give something to another person or ministry.

What motivated Ananias and Sapphira to lie to the Holy Ghost?

1)  They wanted to give to the Lord.

2)  They wanted to be honored.

3)  They wanted to be appreciated.

Their action resulted in them losing their lives.
