Sunday Morning Series - Learn to Discern - Seed or Need?

Text: John 4:46-54 and Various

Three Types of People

People Who Serve

1.  They serve God by serving people. "God, what is my assignment for today?"
2.  They see God's blessings as something promised.
3.  They report mostly positive things about people.

People Who Work

1.  Their priorities come from people. "What do you want me to do?"
2.  Their report is both negative and positive.
3.  Limited steadiness.

People Who Wait to be Served

1.  They wait to be served. They come into the house, sit down and watch TV, and don't lift a finger to help with any of the work.

2.  Mostly negative or under-handedly positive. "I bought that dress five years ago."
3.  Correction is not heard or received.
4.  Full of pride and will change in an instant.

The man in this chapter sought out Jesus when he heard he was in town. He was moved by what he:

1.  Heard
2.  Saw
3.  Felt

His approach was based on need.

There's a higher place that the Spirit of God will lead you to. Seed. The woman with the issue of blood in Mark 5:25-34 moved when she heard about Jesus. Although she was in a desperate situation, she allowed what she heard to go deep into her heart. Her actions were based on faith, while the man's actions were based on sight.

Sunday Morning Series - Learn to Discern - When Training Days Aren't

Text: Acts 9:1-30

Just because a problem comes up doesn't mean it's a training day. We often get into trouble because of disobedience or partial obedience.

Because we're doing things for God doesn't mean we're in the right place. We can be doing things with a wrong attitude. Paul was doing religious things, but they weren't godly. Jesus told Paul that he wasn't in the right place. He was called to: the Gentiles, kings, and the house of Israel.

Your training will get you ready for your purpose. If you've practiced and trained, the Lord will take the things the devil sends to confuse and stop you and make them work in your favor.

To be prepared, you must:

1.  Walk in love. I Corinthians 13

2.  Follow the Holy Spirit's leading.

3.  Pursue your calling. Don't ask others what your calling is; ask the Lord.

5.  Employ your gifts. Whatever your calling, God has given you the gifts to help you accomplish it. Use them, refine them, and become ready for the main event (your calling).

6.  Be consistent. Faithfulness is essential to being prepared.

Sunday Morning Series - Learn to Discern - What We Practice We Perfect

Text:  I Samuel 13 and 15

There are some things we are practicing and getting perfect - good and bad. Prepared people perform, while unprepared people explain.

When King Saul took it upon himself to offer sacrifices instead of waiting for the prophet, Samuel, he was disobeying God. A victory was still produced, but just because things worked doesn't mean things were right. Formulas produce partial obedience. Operating in this area, all we see is that something needs to be done. Samuel tells him that obedience is better than sacrifice.

When the teachings of God's Word become formulas we perform instead of principles we live by, the power will depart. Don't get caught up in wins and losses. If God's principles are not honored, the way is wrong.

Saul became good at making excuses for his lack of obedience. What things have you become good at that you really shouldn't be?

Lying?
Finding comfort in the wrong things - drinking, smoking, sex outside of marriage?
Cussing when a hammer meets your thumb?

Pastor Steve also talked about God's purpose for sex and the reasons for purity.
