Sunday Morning Series - Walking in the Authority of Jesus - Recognize, Enlist, and Energize

Text:  2 Corinthians 10:1-6

Last week, we talked about the origins of attacks. They are seldom about things. Most often they are about principles and precedents.

For example, when I worked for the pizza place while going to Bible School, I made it clear that I would work Fridays and Saturdays but not Sunday. They agreed to this arrangement, and I carried out my part of the bargain. Well, there came a time when they needed someone to work Sunday, and they asked me. I stood my ground, and said, "I don't work Sundays." If I had worked, I would have set a precedent, compromised my principles, and found myself on the regular schedule for Sundays.

Now, don't get me wrong, there are occupations where it's necessary to work on Sunday like hospitals and nursing homes. In fact, Sunday work is required and part of the deal. However, no one is going to die if a pizza place is short handed.

Attacks are designed to damage or destroy our fellowship with God by building a distrust of:

A)  His Word
B)  His Love
C)  His Plans

They also come against our community with others by building suspicion of:

A)  Their Word
B)  Their Love
C)  Their Intentions

And to stir up in us:

A)  Unbelief
B)  Hate
C)  Pride
D)  Fear

Sunday Morning Series - Walking in the Authority of Jesus - Resist, Endure, Press On

Text:  Mark 4:35 - 5:20 & Various

Attacks on the things we do for God, His kingdom, or the blessings we receive from him come from one of three realms. Each one must be handled in a different manner.

Think about having the right tools in the kitchen. While it's possible to open a regular can without a can opener, it's much better if you have one. If you try to deal with your flesh by resisting the devil, it won't work. We have to discipline and train our flesh to come in line with our spirit.

1)  The Three Realms

      A.  Satan's Kingdom

            1.  Not every attack comes from Satan or those in his kingdom.
            2.  The ones that do use deception and wrong thinking
            3.  How do we combat them?

                  a.  Submit to God
                  b.  Resist the devil
                  c.  He will flee from you.

     B.  World System

            1.  Matthew 13:18-23 - The aim is to steal the Word.
            2.  John 16:33 - We're to keep ourselves unspotted from the world.
            3.  The World System wants us to conform to its ways and not to the Word. It uses pressure to force its will on us.
            4.  How do we combat them?

                 a.  Know the Word.
                 b.  Hold onto the Word.

     C.  Our Flesh

           1.  I Corinthians 9:27 - Discipline my body and bring it into line with my spirit.
           2.  Our flesh wants us to give in to temptations and wrong desires.
           3.  How do we defend ourselves?

                a.  Discipline
                b.  Training

Sunday Morning Series - Walking in the Authority of Jesus - Wrong Submission

Text:  Numbers 16

When we operate outside of submission, we operate in the area of rebellion. It affects everyone around us.

Korah is actually a cousin of Moses and a Levite. Somewhere along the line, he lost sight of the importance of what he was called to do. People who don't think their calling is of value start looking around for someone who is respected. They envy those people and seek their position.

Dathan and Abiram listen to Korah. When Moses calls them to a meeting, they refuse and accuse him of acting like a prince over the people. To think this way involves adopting certain views:

1.  Understand - You understand everything about the position and what they face.
2.  Withstand - You could hold up under the assault of that position.
3.  Right Standing - You are not called to stand in that position.

When Moses tells them to do the job they think they should have, they didn't check the Law to see what to do.

1.  Instead they crafted bronze censors. Bronze was the material used in the area of the temple for sin.
2.  Aaron brought a censor made of gold.

The one served where sin consciousness was strong, while gold is a type of the risen Christ and of His finished work.

Sunday Morning Series - You Can Grow From Suffering (Or Not)

Text:  Various

Where do desires come from?

1.  Our carnal nature
2.  Self desires
3.  God's expectations

There is no suffering if you're always doing what you agree with.

1.  If I am submitted to Satan's kingdom, I will do his will.
2.  If I am submitted to myself, I will do what I want.
3.  If I am submitted to God, I will do what God wants me to do.

Don't allow your will to rise up above the will of God.

Suffering

1.  It's not external - persecution (Timothy 3:12)

2.  It's internal - (Ephesians 2:1-3, Romans 7:8)

It's a conflict between what God desires and another desire working in us. (Philippians 1:23-24, Romans 7:14-25)

Quotable Quotes

"The frustrating thing is that those who are attacking religion claim they are doing it in the name of tolerance, freedom and openmindedness. Question: Isn't the real truth that they are intolerant of religion? They refuse to tolerate its importance in our lives." - Ronald Reagan
