Sunday Morning Series - Enduring Change - Don't Let It In!

Text:  Judges 6:1-7:25 and Various

The Angel of the Lord (Jesus' appearance in the Old Testament) comes to Gideon and gives him an assignment. He says, "The Lord is with YOU..." Gideon replies, "If the Lord is with US, why then has all this happened to us?" It's never a good idea to start out with, "If the Lord is..."

Gideon has such a low opinion of himself that he puts fleeces out. Even when God answered him, he wasn't convinced. We're never told to put out fleeces. Gideon was acting in total unbelief.

He's also come to wrong conclusions. While God gives us good things, the enemy will try to steal them away from us.

Gideon's fear of the Midianites has him cowering indoors winnowing his crop. He finally agrees to obey God, but does so at night. It's not that he doesn't want anyone to know what he's doing because he takes 10 people with him. He's afraid of a confrontation with their enemies. It is best not to fear, but it is second best to fear and still do it.

In Judges 7:1-25 - He calls for the Israelites to join him in defeating the enemy. Even though they are vastly outnumbered, God tells Gideon he has too many people and instructs him to send all those who are afraid back home. Eventually, his group is whittled down to 300 men.

Sunday Morning Series - Enduring Change - Filled

Text:  Matthew 12:43-45 and Various

Last week, we saw the story of the man delivered from a demon. His house (body) became "empty, swept, and put in order," but it didn't stay that way. The demon returned, and upon seeing the condition went and brought seven even more evil than himself into the man.

In order to make a change permanent, you cannot just take away what you don't like or want. You have to add something to fill its place.

God promised Abram (later called, "Abraham") that his descendants would be as numerous as the sands of the sea and the stars in the sky. At the time, Abram was 75 years old. He and his wife were long past having any hope of bringing a child into the world.

God began dealing with Abram. First, He instructed him to leave his country and follow God to a place he didn't know. At various times, He reiterated the promise. For a while, Abram was skeptical and even tried to help God out by producing a son, Ishmael, with the servant Hagar.

At one point, God changes Abram's name to Abraham which means, "father of many." So every time someone calls him Abram, he must correct them. He is constantly re-stating the promise when he says his name. He's hearing the meaning over and over again. God is changing his conversation.

Sunday Morning Series - Enduring Change - Changing my State or Condition

Text:  Matthew 12:38-45

Have you ever been prayed for to receive healing only to have the condition return after some time? Why if you were healed didn't it stay that way?

In Matthew 12:38-45, the Pharisees tell Jesus they want to see a sign from Him. Jesus tells them the desire/need for a sign demonstrates an evil condition. He points out when the men of Ninevah heard Jonah's message, they changed and repented. The queen of the south traveled far because she sought true wisdom.

Jesus also pointed out when an unclean spirit leaves a man changes are made to the house after its departure. It is said to be "empty, swept, and put in order." Obviously, prior to this it wasn't in that condition. We might even call it messy.

What Jesus is teaching here is that changes were made, but they insufficient to sustain the new state of the man. So what is needed here?

Think about a child playing with blocks. One block is stacked on top of another but eventually they collapse. Why? Because there isn't a foundation to support the tower. By making a wider base, they can build higher.

In the story Jesus told, the changes made were sufficient to keep the one demon away, but not when he returned with others that were stronger. So even though a miracle occurred to change his state or condition, it did not last because of what he neglected to do.

Whatever you want to do, you have to add something to sustain it:

Physical
Spiritual
Mental

Sunday Morning Series - Attaining Completion - Goodness

Text:  Galatians 5:22-23 and Various

Definition:  Agathosune - goodness, virtue or beneficence. It may imply generosity.

Vines - "Distinguishing between the two chrestotes describes the kinder aspects of goodness, agathos also includes the sterner qualities in which doing good to others is not necessarily by gentle means."

Lightfoot - puts it this way: "Chrestotes is a kindly disposition toward others, agathosune is a kindly action / activity on their behalf."

Stay mindful of other people rather than yourself. I like to run with a partner. One day last week, I ran with my buddy. By paying attention to each other, we were able to make better time. If you're just mindful of yourself there's no one to set the pace.

Being stern without kindness is not goodness. Always be aware of your disposition toward others and mindful of what you can do to help them.
