Sunday Morning Series - The Wisdom of God - Wells and Rivers

Text:  Various

In Proverbs 10:11, 18:4, and Isaiah 12:3, the Bible refers to wells in us. However, it also talks about rivers in us. (See John 7:38 and John 4:6-14) What is the difference between a well and a river?

1)  Wells serve some people, one at a time. You have to get a bucket and a rope and haul it up from a deep place.

2)  Rivers serve many people, many at a time. They are on the surface and easier to access.

How does this relate to us?

1)  When we are saved, we have a well within us.

2)  When we Spirit-filled, we have a river within us.

Draw from the well within us:

1)  Prayer
2)  Reading the Word
3)  Ears to hear
4)  Study
5)  Speak/say, including praying in the Holy Spirit.

Become a river:

1)  Rivers flow.
2)  Others can come and receive.

Receive from the rivers:

1)  God has placed gifts in the church.
2)  How you receive from them determines whether or not you benefit.

Sunday Morning Series - The Wisdom of God - Draw Water From the Well

Text:  Isaiah 12:3 & Various

Proverbs 20:5 says, "Counsel in the heart of man is like a deep well, but a man of understanding will draw it out."

What has been given to us must be drawn out by us. Wells provided water in those days for the population. In order to get water out of the well, they had to have the proper tools. Remember the story of the woman who met Jesus at the well? She commented that He didn't have anything to draw with.

The water was there, but it took effort on the part of the people to get it. God has given us many things, but we must draw it into our lives by faith. The woman with the issue of blood developed her faith and spoke it with her mouth: "If I can but touch the hem of his garment, I'll be healed." Blind Bartimaeus cried out when he heard Jesus was near, and threw aside his beggar cloak when Jesus summoned him.

What counsel does the Word of God give us to show us we are in faith? Isaiah 12:3 says, "With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation." Unbelief has the same kind of association with fear and depression that faith has with peace and joy. Also, if I have peace, I am settled on the subject.

Watch your joy level. Watch your peace level. Like the gauges on the dashboard of your car that show how much gas is in your tank, temperature, etc., they indicate whether or not you're in faith.

Sunday Morning Series - The Wisdom of God - Getting in the Press

Text:  I Samuel 3

Review

Mark 5:27-30 KJV - "When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment. For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole. And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague. And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?"

The Press

1)  The woman got "in the press" and received what she needed.
2)  Many people are "in the press" and receive nothing.
3)  How can we get in and receive what we need?

     A. God is motivated by our need. He saw our need for a savior and sent Jesus. However, He is moved on our behalf by our faith. Salvation is available to us, but we must respond to God's invitation.

     B.  If we come to God on the basis of our good works, our desperate needs, or anything else, we'll get nothing because He's made faith the thing that activates His promises.

     C.  If we go to a grocery store, we must present a form of payment they accept whether it's a check, an ATM card, or a credit card in good standing.

Getting in the PRESS:

1.  Pray
2.  Read
3.  Ears to hear
4.  Study
5.  Say it

I Samuel 3

1)  Samuel ministered before the Lord, but at that point did not

     A.  Know the Lord
     B.  Neither was the  Word of God revealed to him

2)  Just because we go to church, serve in a ministry, do things for God, hear the Word of God, it doesn't mean we know Him, or that we hear Him.

3)  We need to develop our hearing

      A.  Recognize his voice
      B.  Retain what he says to us
      C.  Refine or fine tune our hearing

Sunday Morning Series - The Wisdom of God - Building Your Own Faith

Text:  Mark 10:46-52

Blind Bartimaeus' occupation was begging. A crowd meant opportunities to receive donations. The money would provide for him for a day, maybe two. This crowd was different. They were following Jesus.

Bartimaeus had heard of Jesus before and believed if he could get an audience with Him, he would receive his sight. Yet without hope that would happen, he continued to beg. Bartimaeus, like many, believed and had faith.

When he discovered the crowd was following Jesus, he called out to Him. I'm sure he must have thought about what he would say if by some chance he encountered Jesus. He calls out to the Lord, addressing him as Jesus, thou son of David. This grabs Jesus' attention. The beggar recognizes He is of the lineage of David, the king. Jesus tells him to come.

Bartimaeus casts away his beggar garment and hastens to the Lord with the aid of some people in the crowd. That garment gave him the right to beg and told others he was really blind. It showed his utter faith that he would be healed. He received his sight that day.

This is merely a taste of the entire message. We hope you'll visit our website, and click on the Listen tab. You can listen online, download it to your MP3 player, or Podcast FREE.

Quotable Quotes

"Renewal is rooted in faith, not in resolutions! Faith is the result of a decision about Christ. I cannot make a new me or a new you, but Christ can make you new and me new, as well, if we decide for Him." - Frank Harrington
