Sunday Morning Series - Attaining Completion - Kindness

Text:  Numbers 16:41-50, Galatians 5:22-23, and various

Definition:  Kindness - chrestotes - to show kindness, or to be friendly.

One scholar noted "when the word chrestotes (kindness) is applied to inter-human relationships, it conveys the idea of being adaptable to others." It's not an attitude of, "this is how I am, accept it." Rather, it's the willingness to change and adapt to the needs of people around you.

This attitude was modeled by Jesus. He was teaching and ministering to the multitudes. No doubt, He became tired and needed rest. They go to a quiet place only to find the crowds have arrived there ahead of them. Jesus is moved with compassion and puts aside His need for rest to minister to the people.

Moses faced constant complaining and murmuring from the Israelites. Yet he stuck it out with them for 40 years.

When we move into unkindness, we lose compassion. The two go together. Scripture tells us that love suffers long and is kind. Make sure your words are not filled with sarcasm, venom, and bitterness. "Say what you mean, mean what you say, but don't say it mean."

Sunday Morning Series - Attaining Completion - Aimlessly

Text:  Numbers 20:1-21:35

After refusing to enter the Promised Land, God leads the Israelites to Kadesh. Once again, there's no water, and they start complaining. God instructs Moses to speak to the rock. He's so aggravated with them that he strikes the rock twice. They get water, but God tells Moses his action of striking the rock twice means he won't enter the Promised Land.

There's no indication the Israelites move away from Kadesh Barnea for many years. God has told them they will remain in the wilderness for 40 years until the disobedient generation dies out. When they finally move on, Moses requests passage through Edom. They are on their way toward a different entry point into the Promised Land. When Edom denies their request and threatens them, they leave the area. There are certain nations God has promised land, and these are the descendants of Esau.

They arrive at Arad, and the inhabitants are ready for a fight. This is one of the first times the Israelites didn't start complaining. They defeat Arad and move on to Hormah.

Discouragement sets in, and they speak against God and Moses. NEVER GIVE VOICE TO DISCOURAGEMENT. You can think it or feel it, but don't speak it out of your mouth. You will begin despising the blessings of God and viewing them as worthless.

Are you changing the way you deal with life or waiting for life to change first?

Sunday Morning Series - Attaining Completion - Unprepared

Text:  Numbers 13:1 - 14:10

The spies were sent into the Promised Land with a specific assignment:

1.  Find out the strength and numbers of the people.
2.  The condition of the land and cities.
3.  Bring back some of the fruit.

Whenever an assignment is given, patience is one of the qualities that keeps us on track to get it done.
When they returned, they gave their report: (and more):

1.  The people are strong.
2.  The land is flowing with milk and honey.
3.  They brought back a large cluster of grapes that required two men to carry it on a pole, as well as other fruit.

That part of the report was within the guidelines of their assignment. Unfortunately, they told the people we cannot overcome them. We were like grasshoppers in their sight. Joshua and Caleb disagreed, but the people sided with the other spies. They allowed fear to take control and forgot all that God had done for them. God had commanded them to take the land, but they refused to obey.

Their reaction shows their faith was not in God's Word but in circumstances. They cried all night and then criticized their leaders. Self-pity drove them to the point of wanting to stone Moses and Aaron.

Years later, when the spies spoke with Rahab, she told them how afraid they were of the Israelites because of all the things God had done for them. They didn't view Israel as grasshoppers but as a formidable enemy.

The people didn't go through any of the tests they faced in faith,so patience wasn't produced. No patience, no endurance! Thus, they were unable to handle any opposition, persecution, or trouble.

Numbers 14:11 - God considered their disobedience as rejection. He was angry and wanted to destroy them. Instead, they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years until the next generation reached maturity. They were the ones who entered the Promised Land.

Sunday Morning Series - Attaining Completion - Becoming Dissatisfied With God's Things

Text:  Numbers 11

In Numbers 11:1-9, we find the Israelites once again complaining. Manna satisfied their hunger, but they craved meat. They despised God's provision.

God doesn't like complaining. Scripture tells us He was angry with them. Moses is affected by their complaints. He's overwhelmed with all his responsibilities. While God was angry, Moses was displeased. He approaches God and asks why God has afflicted him.

God responds by telling Moses to select 70 men. He then anoints them to help Moses. The Lord sends an overabundance of quail to the people. Before they can even chew it, He sends a plague among them and many die.

What lessons can we learn from their experience?

1.  We must follow the desires of the Lord, but not our own intense cravings.

2.  Complaining is easy, but rise to the level in your walk where you're able to resist it.

3.  Rejoicing brings a positive effect. Be thankful.

4.  When you get into complaining, you're despising God and His provision. It pulls you out of faith, and you begin to doubt His ability. The more you complain, your mountain (problem) will grow, and your faith will shrink.

5.  The reason we complain is our patience has run out. This directly impacts our faith because faith and patience work together.

Sunday Morning Series - Attaining Completion - Patience - Wait For It

Text:  Exodus 24 and 32

In an earlier lesson, we saw that it's the testing of our faith that produces patience not the trial itself. We need wisdom in these situations.

Exodus 24:1-18 - Moses has a short meeting with the Lord and writes down everything He says. He then goes before the people and reads it to them. Everyone says they will do everything and obey.

The Lord again calls Moses to meet him on Mt. Sinai. The glory of the Lord rests on the mount, and on the seventh day, God calls to Moses out of the midst of the cloud.

Meanwhile, the people are waiting and getting restless. A long time to God and a long time to us is two different things. Moses waited patiently for God to speak. Doing nothing is not always bad, nor is doing something always good.

The people pressure Aaron and Hur to make a god for them. The golden calf is fashioned from their gold. God isn't happy and wants to destroy the people, but Moses intercedes for them.

Waiting in faith, just like  enduring under pressure in faith, will produce patience.
