Sunday Morning Series - Hope That Does Not Waver - The Switch of Faith

Text: II Samuel 2

We're returning to the story of David. Samuel anointed him King of Israel as a youth, but there was a gap between the time of the promise and its fulfillment.

Now, the gap is closing. After Saul's death, David asks God for direction. God instructs him to go to Hebron. There he is anointed king over the house of Judah only.

While becoming King of Judah was a step in the right direction and narrowed the gap between the promise and the fulfillment, events were still not lining up. He was King of Judah for seven years before the situation changed. David could have switched his hope and faith from God to Israel that they would now make him king, but he didn't try to make it happen.

In our lives, it's a temptation to switch our hope and faith from God to doctors, a job, a spouse, or some other resource. Our prayers are partially answered, but we're short of total fulfillment of God's promises. Stay with God, hold fast the confession of your hope, and do not waver!

Sunday Morning Series - Hope That Does Not Waver - Christians Can Jump!

Text: Daniel 2:1-14 and Daniel 2:15-45

Last week, we talked about David facing Goliath. Today, we're seeing how Daniel jumped the gap between where he was and where he wanted to be.

This is a familiar passage, telling about the king's dream and his demand that the wise men of Babylon not only tell him the interpretation, but also relate the dream. He instinctively knew the dream carried great meaning and importance.

All the soothsayers, sorcerers, and Chaldeans balked at this unorthodox request. They respond to the king that: 1) No king has ever asked this of the wise men. 2) Only the gods can tell it, and they don't dwell with men.

This sends the king into a rage. What's he been paying these guys for anyway? They're eating his food, living in quarters provided by him, wearing clothing paid for by him, and they can't deliver the goods? He orders that all the wise men be put to death, even those in training. This includes Daniel and his friends.

When the king's messenger appears at Daniel's door to haul them away to the executioner, God gives Daniel wisdom. Sometimes knowing the right question to ask can mean the difference between life and death. Instead of saying, "why do you want to kill us," he asks, "why is the king's command so urgent?"

Daniel asks for the king to set an appointed time, and he tells the king he will reveal the dream and the interpretation. At that point, he and his friends don't have a clue, but they know God will answer their prayers. They pray, and God reveals the king's dream and the interpretation to Daniel in a night vision. Daniel jumped the gap between where he was - about to be executed - and where he wanted to be - telling the king his dream and the interpretation.

If you want to close the gap between where you are and where you want to be, you have to expect to get there. Faith begins where the will of God is known. God wants you to go out on a limb, and declare you will get there.

Sunday Morning Series - Hope That Does Not Waver - Gapology

Text: Various

If you look up "Gapology" in the dictionary, you won't find it. I made it up. It's the study of that period between something God has given or made and the fulfillment in our lives.

An example of the gap is Abraham. Between the time God told Abraham he was the father of many nations and the birth of Isaac, 24 years elapsed.

God gave us food, but it doesn't appear in our house. Effort is required on our part. We either have to grow the food or purchase it from someone who does. (Genesis 1:29, Genesis 9:3).

God also gave the Israelites land, but they were required to possess it. (Numbers 33:51-53, Deut. 9:23, Joshua 1:3, Joshua 24:13). Israel failed on their first attempt to possess the land. Even though God said it belonged to them, they thought they were unable to possess it. The gap was made longer because they refused to believe the promise given by God.

Key point: If God promised you something, it's yours whether you have it or not.

David didn't have an easy road growing up. When the prophet, Samuel, came to his father's house to anoint the future king of Israel, David wasn't called to stand before him. After God said, "no," to his seven brothers, Samuel asked Jesse if he had any other sons. When Jesse told Samuel his youngest son was with the sheep, Samuel ordered them to bring him home.

Even though his father and brothers viewed him as a storyteller, David never gave up. He believed God when the prophet said he'd be king. He never focused on his deficiences. There was a big gap between the time he was anointed king by Samuel and the fulfillment of the prophecy.

The Israelites looked at the areas where they fell short. It cost them:

C Calling

O Opportunity

S Strength

T Talent

Will you trust God during the gap between promise and fulfillment?

Sunday Morning Series - Hope That Does Not Waver - I Am, I Will, I Shall

Text: Genesis 17-18.

What God Has Given:

  1. There are things which are mine by covenant. They have been deeded. They're what's present.

2. There are things which are mine by conception. Form a notion, idea, to imagine - potential.

3. There are those things which are mine by promise. These are things yet to come.

COVENANT - includes healing and righteousness. These are things that are already done. Jesus bought our salvation and healing on the cross. Yet they are not automatic. We're required to take advantage of them. Covenant is a two-way street.

CONCEPTION - These are things I will obtain. It is what has been taught to me by His Word.

PROMISE - These are things I will have at a future date. One day, I'll be in heaven. Abraham was promised a son by Sarah. Yet, there was a big gap between the promise and the fulfillment.

Both Abraham and Sarah laughed when God reiterated His promise of a child. He was 99 and she was 90. Do we laugh when we're reminded of God's promises? Notice they didn't laugh out loud, but in their hearts. God will fulfill His Word.
