Quotable Quote

"Do not keep the alabaster boxes of your love and tenderness sealed up until your friends are dead. Fill their lives with sweetness. Speak approving, cheering words while their ears can hear them and while their hearts can be thrilled by them." - Henry Ward Beecher

Sunday Morning Series - The Need for Faithfulness - My Assignments

Text:  I Corinthians 14:1-5 and various

God calls each one of us into ministry (service). Anything you do to serve the Body of Christ is ministry. God empowers us in that calling through gifts.

There are three types of assignment:

1.  Tasks - These are one-time actions or undertakings. Jesus had an assignment from the Father to set the man with a legion of demons free. He completed that task.

2.  Projects - These are longer-term assignments with an end. Solomon was given the task of building the temple. Titus stayed in Crete to set things in order.

3.  Operations - These are ongoing tasks. David ruled Israel as king over a period of time. Paul was an apostle to the Gentiles. Timothy was the pastor of the church of Ephesus.

How are we to handle our assignments?

1.  Be attentive - know what you've been asked to do.

2.  Be focused - Stay with what's important. Keep it in front of you without adding or taking away any part.

3.  Be diligent - stay with your assignment until it's completed.

How are you doing on your assignments? Do you know what they are? D you know what type they are? Are you multiplying yourself?

Sunday Morning Series - The Need For Faithfulness - What Faithfulness is to God - In Me (Gifts)"

Text:  I Corinthians 12:1-7, 12:8-11

Diversities

This word is from the Greek word, "diatreseis," which means division and distribution. It is used three times in this chapter and is the only place it's used in the New Testament.

There are different gifts, ministries and activities. The same Lord and Holy Spirit are behind each one. This means the traits and characteristics of our God can be seen in each manifestation of the gifts. The purpose is ALWAYS the profit of all!

The Vocal Gifts

1.  Prophecy - proclaim truth for God. The simple gift of prophecy does not involve foretelling future events. It is for edifying and encouraging believers. It can take the form of teaching, prayer, and general conversation.

2.  Tongues - known or unknown.

3.  Interpretation of tongues - The interpretation of tongues is to give understanding. It isn't a word for word translation.

The Revelation Gifts

1.  Word of Knowledge - This is revelation knowledge of past or current events you had no way of knowing.

2.  Word of Wisdom - Revelation knowledge about future events. This comes at the will of God.

3.  Discerning of Spirits - We often hear this described as the gift of discernment. There is no such thing. Discerning of Spirits is the ability to see into the spirit realm. (See Acts 16:16-18)

Sunday Morning Series - The Need for Faithfulness - What Faithfulness is to God - In Me

Text:  Romans 12:1-21

Romans 12:1-2 is often quoted. The word, "Beseech," in the Greek means, "to call near." We're to be faithful in mind and body. Since this is the will of God, not doing this is me being faithful to something else.

1.  Present your bodies
2.  Do not be conformed to this world, but be ye transformed..."

People like to say that God accepts them just as they are. God does accept us through Jesus Christ, but then we're told to change (be transformed). So, we're not to stay the same but to grow and mature in the Lord.

Faithfulness and Spiritual Giftings - Romans 12:3-8

1.  Don't be thinking more highly of yourself than you ought to think. Do think soberly. It doesn't say to put yourself down, but rather not to think you're better than you are.

2.  There are many members of the Body of Christ (the Church) - This equals many functions and thus different functions.

What does faithfulness have to do with my attitude?

Sunday MorningSeries - The Need for Faithfulness - What Faithfulness is to God - Not Me

Text:  John 8:31-59

Over the coming weeks, we'll be looking at this subject in three parts:

1.  Not Me (Outside of myself)
2.  In Me (Entrusted by God)
3.  Just Me (My own actions)

Today, we'll be looking at truth. We're examining not only the truth of God's Word but also anything that is represented by me as truth.

The world will present lies as truth. Jesus told the religious leaders of His day they were of their father, the devil. If we present the falsehoods of the world as truth and as God's representations of truth, what does that do to the truth? We have a truth detector within us, the Holy Spirit, and He will alert us when something isn't right. If you speak what the world says is truth, we lessen the truth. If you accept a lie, you kill the voice of the Holy Spirit in your heart.
