Quotable Quotes

"It is a blessed thing to learn that God's word can never fail. Never harken to human plans. God can work mightily when you persist in believing Him in spite of discouragements from the human standpoint... I am not moved by what I see. I am moved only by what I believe. Sunday Morning Series - Walking in The Authority of Jesus - Authority or Power

Text:  Mark 11:12-26

Jesus passes a fig tree that has the appearance of fruit, although it was not the season. When he finds it doesn't have fruit, he curses it by speaking out loud.

We can see from this incident that fruit may not always be externally visible. You have to get up close as Jesus did. Many Christians make fruit inspections from a distance.

He and the disciples move on and enter the Temple at Jerusalem. Jesus observes what's happening, but doesn't do anything at that point. Scripture tells us he only did what his Father showed him. They return to Bethany that evening.

They pass by the fig tree the next day, and it has withered. Jesus doesn't comment on it, but one of the disciples points it out. Jesus knew his authority and had no doubt the tree would die.

When you speak to something, you're exercising your authority:

Say it
Believe it
Don't doubt it

Authority requires confidence.

Don't mix up speaking to things and praying. Jesus reprimanded the disciples when they woke him because of the storm. They had the authority to speak to the storm and command it to stop. We can ask God for things (prayer). In both speaking and praying, belief must exist when the words exit our mouths, not when the thing happens.

Sunday Morning Christmas Message

Text:  Matthew 2

King Herod (The Great) had several traits. He was cruel and ambitious and would stop at nothing to secure his position as king. History tells us he killed a brother-in-law, a mother-in-law, two sons, and a wife. He loved possessions and prestige. His father was poisoned, and Herod was paranoid at any threat to his life or kingship. He ruled for 40 years, but then another King came along - Jesus.

When the Wise Men showed up asking about the location of the King of the Jews, Herod was dying of a disease and in much pain. In view of his character, you can imagine the effect their question had on him.

He calls the Jewish leaders and questions them about where the Messiah is supposed to be born. The information is old, and the Wise Men never go to Bethlehem. Joseph, Mary, and Jesus are now back in their hometown. Scripture records that when the Wise Men arrived (after following the star) they visited him in a house - not a stable. The word used for young child in the Bible applies to a toddler rather than a newborn.

Herod is so enraged when the Wise Men don't return with information that he calculates Jesus' possible age. He sends out an order that all the male children under two years of age in Bethlehem and the nearby area be killed. Many people question this account because it's only mentioned in the Bible and in the works of Josephus. When you take into consideration that Bethlehem was a small town, the massacre probably didn't cause much of a stir in the rest of the country.

The Wise Men brought many gifts to Jesus. They no doubt financed the years in Egypt and His ministry later in life.

Herod dies, and his kingdom is split between three sons and his daughter, Salome. When Joseph hears which son is reigning in Judea, he decides to settle in Nazareth of Galilee.

What king reigns over you? We are born under a king (our flesh) until we give ourselves to the one born king, Jesus. Are we just going through the motions of religion or are we allowing Jesus to be Lord of our lives?

Christmas - What is Your Sign?

Text:  Luke 2:8-20

Why are swaddling clothes a sign to the shepherds? These shepherds raised sheep for the sole purpose of producing lambs without blemish for sacrificial offerings in nearby Jerusalem.

What were swaddling clothes? When a ewe was about to birth a lamb, it was taken inside. The lamb was examined to make sure it was perfect. To protect it from injury, they wrapped it in swaddling clothes and placed it in a manger.

When Jesus was born, He was the perfect lamb of God - the future sacrificial lamb. He was wrapped in swaddling clothes and placed in a manger. This was a sign to the shepherds that He was the Messiah.

Many Christians look for signs of their own:

1.  How smoothly things go.
2.  The problems that pop up.
3.  How dramatically something came to be.

These are usually signs we've created rather than ones God has pointed out to us.

Signs in the Bible -

1.  Moses - the burning bush. He was not where God wanted him, and it took a burning bush to get his attention.

2.  Pharaoh - the Red Sea. His soldiers died going after the Israelites.

3.  Gideon - put out a fleece, wanting a sign from God that the instructions God gave were indeed true.

Signs of our own appointment -

When Moses goes up into Mt. Sinai and doesn't return for an extended period of time, the Israelites decided it was a sign that this was all a mistake. They urged Aaron to build a golden calf and worshiped it.

God wasn't happy with them and told Moses to get down there and deal with the situation.

Our sign -

1.  What signs have spoken to you?
2.  Prayers answered or unanswered?
3.  Trouble and hardship?
4.  Need and urgency?
5.  Can you be moved off the course God put you on by signs around you?
6.  Can you be kept from the course God wants you on by the same?
7.  Matthew 12:39-41

Sunday Morning Series - Walking in the Authority of Jesus - All is Not As It Seems

Text:  2 Samuel 16:1-4, 2 Samuel 16:5-13

Mephibosheth is the son of Jonathan and a descendant of Saul. His servant, Ziba, goes to King David and falsely presents a bad picture of Mephibosheth to David.

David has treated Jonathan's son with kindness and had him eat at his table. He's upset and accepts what Ziba says without verifying it with one or two witnesses. He pronounces judgment based on emotion and not evidence.

Mephibosheth presents his story with evidence to back it up. David has returned to Jerusalem unscathed, and the man's attitude is exemplary. Even though David gave his goods to Ziba, Mephibosheth tells the king it's fine. Ziba can have everything. He's just happy that David is safe.

Shimei is also from the family and house of Saul. He curses David in the presence of the mighty men. His statement in Verses 7 and 8 is inaccurate. He calls the king a bloodthirsty man. David was anointed by God to be a warrior and protect Israel from her enemies. Shimei also declares that the Lord has delivered the kingdom to  Absalom, David's son. God did not anoint Absalom to be king.

People can and wil misunderstand what you do for the kingdom of God. You have to be confident that what you're doing is born of the call of God.

Abishai reacts and wants to kill Shimei, but David won't allow it. However, when Solomon is about to take the throne, David tells him to handle the matter and not allow Shimei to go to the grave via natural causes. Solomon tells Shimei he will not kill him as long as he doesn't set foot outside of Jerusalem. He wants to see if Shimei will submit and obey his order. After a number of days, Shimei left Jerusalem and forfeits his life.

Our submission is not evidenced by our words but by our actions. David showed mercy and gave people a chance to repent. Shimei's lack of loyalty was evidenced by his actions and eventually he paid the price.

Sunday Morning Series - Walking in the Authority of Jesus - Bad Attitude Proofing

Text:  Various

Four ways a bad attitude comes to us:

1.  We lose what we thought was ours.
2.  We don't get what we think we should.
3.  We get what we don't want.
4.  Someone else gets what we wanted.

These include (but are not limited to):

1.  Stuff
2.  Promotion
3.  Money
4.  Recognition
5.  Hardship

To keep a bad attitude away, we must be on guard against the way in which it comes.

Haman

In Esther 3:1-6, Haman is angry with Mordecai because he didn't get the recognition he wanted.

To make matters worse, the king tells him to honor Mordecai. Most people who have bad attitudes expect things to be done for them. (Esther 6:1-14)

Cain

Cain's offering was rejected by God, and he got a bad attitude. Since his brother's offering was received, he directed his wrath at him and killed him.

The bad attitude developed because he wanted to do things his way and not God's way.

Moses

In Exodus 2:10-15, Moses didn't get what he thought he should and did get what he didn't want. Somewhere along the line, he discovered the Jews were his people and felt called to rescue them. He took matters into his own hands and killed an Egyptian. When he intervened in a fight between two Hebrews, they turned on him. He ended up running from Pharoah.

Thankfully, he got his attitude straight eventually and fulfilled his destiny.

Saul

I Samuel 18:6-9 - Saul became enraged when people honored David above him. Even though David was loyal to him, he chased him all over the countryside, trying to kill him. His bad attitude cost him the throne.

Maintaining a good attitude in any suffering will sustain your submission and preserve your promotions.

Sunday Morning Series - Walking in the Authority of Jesus - A Better Attitude in Ministry

Text:  Acts 13:1-13

Where you rise in ministry doesn't depend on who you're under or who you're around. It's up to you.

John Mark - Acts 12:12 & 25 - His mother was active in ministry, and he's related to Barnabas. No doubt, he probably assisted with the tasks needed when believers gathered. Barnabas takes him along on a missionary journey with Paul. After the incident with the sorcerer, he runs home to Mama because he gets scared. John Mark didn't have the right attitude. We'll get back to him later.

Three Types of Ministry

1.  Those who can develop a person's attitude. How good is your attitude? The main way to determine your own condition is how long to you persevere when you are waiting for God to answer you? Are you willing to wait until the answer comes? Faith works through love and patience.

2.  Those that need one more seasoned. Acts 6:1-4 - Many feel qualified for this level of ministry, but until people around you in ministry feel you are, you're not. Ministry has no room for those who are self-qualified.

3.  And those that need absolute trust and confidence. Philip moved from waiting on tables into the office of the evangelist. Stephen moved on into other ministry as well (Acts 6:8). John was trusted with so much, including the revelation of the tribulation times. Peter became the most prominent leader of the early church.

Back to John Mark. He didn't just leave the mission field, he prepared. He went on that journey when he wasn't ready. Later, we see him visiting Paul in prison. Paul assigned tasks to him. John Mark got his attitude fixed.

It can be a hard thing to trust those over you to have your best interest in mind. Attitude in ministry is more important than talent, training, and even results.

Sunday Morning Series - Walking in the Authority of Jesus - Gehazi's Rebellion

Text: 2 Kings 5:15-27

After Naaman is healed of leprosy, he offers Elisha a gift of gratitude. Elisha refuses. He doesn't give a reason, but it's a strong possibility the Lord instructed him not to do so. The prophet wasn't one to say, "The Lord said..." On one occasion in particular, he mentions that he was acting by the Lord's direction. Whatever his reasons, he made it abundantly clear he wasn't going to receive a gift.

Gehazi witnesses this refusal and sees an injustice. The Word says Gehazi "said," so the thought came, he embraced it, and then said.

1.  He sees what Elisha did.
2.  Hears what Elisha said.
3.  Calls Elisha his, "master."
4.  Embraces a thought that puts himself in the position of master.
5.  Then puts that thought into action.

He chases after Naaman and makes an excuse for Elisha's supposed change of heart (unexpected visitors). Naaman is more than willing to give Gehazi some of the gifts and even send two of his own servants to carry them. He gives Gehazi 4 talents of silver, which would be worth about $24,000 today, and 4 changes of clothing.

Gehazi stores the items in the house and returns to Elisha. The prophet confronts him and asks where he went. This must have scared him that Elisha knew what he'd done.

Sunday Morning Series - Walking in the Authority of Jesus - Progressing in Submission

Text: Various

Did the disciples submit to Jesus in everything? It doesn't take much effort to imagine how difficult it must have been to leave their occupations and follow Jesus. He walks up to them and say, "follow me." Submission can be painful when you don't agree with what is being asked of you. Let's look at some examples:

1. Jesus is surrounded by a multitude and suddenly asks, "Who touched me?" Peter must be thinking along the lines of this is a silly question. His evaluation looked only at was visible, while Jesus informed him that someone who touched Him drew healing virtue (the woman with the issue of blood). Luke 8:43-46

Peter had not learned to accept Jesus' words without question.

2.  Matthew 14:28-31 - Here we have Peter walking on the water with Jesus. In this story he gets it half right. While focusing on Jesus, he walks on water. The minute he takes his eyes off Jesus by taking note of the wind and waves, he sinks. Doubt will cause you to switch your submission from Jesus to something or someone else.

3.  Matthew17:24-27 - Jesus tells Peter to put a hook in the water, and the first fish he pulls out will have a coin in his mouth. Do you know how ridiculous this must have sounded to a professional fisherman? A fish either swallows something or spits it out. Put a hook in the water? He uses nets to haul in fish. Still, he obeyed even though it sounded impossible. When he opened the fish's mouth, there was the coin.

He got a passing grade on this one.

The many examples of the disciples' up and down success with submission to Jesus' commands, we're shown we learn by practice. Even though they failed so many times, God still blessed them.

The enemy tries to make us think we have to get everything perfect before God will bless us. As long as we're growing and maturing in our walk with Him, He will show His divine favor.
