Sunday Morning Series - Under the Surface - Getting In Sync at Christmas

Text://Matthew 1:18-2:12 & Various

In Luke 1:26-38, we see the angel Gabriel appear to Mary. Gabriel always carries important messages from God.

Mary wasn't troubled by the angel's appearance, but wondered what his words meant. The Jewish people were well aware of Isaiah's prophecy about the birth of Messiah. She knew there was more to the angel's message than a commendation from God. Just because she had questions didn't mean she was doubting what he said.

Bethrothal in Mary and Joseph's time was much like being engaged today. It was a little different in that they were considered as good as married, but they did not live together.

Joseph was an honorable man. When Mary told him about the angel's visitation and that she was carrying the Messiah, he was troubled. He finally made a decision that he would put her away quietly and not marry her. He had no desire to see her stoned or shamed in front of the whole community.

As he slept, an angel came to him in a dream and told him not to be afraid but to take Mary as his wife. He immediately obeyed and married her. In those days, weddings meant a big feast that often lasted for days. The fact they married so quickly no doubt gave rise to speculation. Both Joseph and Mary put their lives and reputations on the line to obey God.

There are people who don't believe the story of the virgin birth. Yet, the Bible clearly teaches that while Eve sinned first, it was Adam's sin that brought the curse down upon the human race. The sin nature is passed on through the seed of the man. In order for Jesus to be born free of the curse, He could not have a human father.

When people don't believe the Bible, it's because they have accepted something else as truth. If we want to be in sync with God, believing His Word is essential.

Sunday Morning Series - Under the Surface - Out of Sync and in Trouble

Text:  Numbers 12:1-16

Chapter 12 begins with the word, "Then..." After the complaining and despising of Chapter 11, Miriam and Aaron murmur against Moses. Perhaps as leaders, they thought they were exempt from consequences. Most likely, they thought they were okay doing this because they were right. When we are out of sync with God, even doing what is blatantly wrong will seem good to us.

In Numbers 12:2-3, they ask, "Has the Lord only..." Where did that thought come from? Why does it sound familiar? (Think of the Garden of Eden.) The focus seems to be on what the Lord has done, but actually it is about their role and their dissatisfaction with it.

This is the goal of the enemy:

1.  He gets us to not be content with what we have.
2.  He get us to covet what we don't have.
3.  We get consumed with obtaining whatever it is we don't have.

How did God respond to their murmuring against Moses? To hear the entire message, please visit our website and click on the Media Tab to access this Sunday's teaching.

If you're visiting in the area, looking for a church home, or desiring to know how God is relevant to you and your life, we invite you to our Sunday Morning Service at 10:00 AM. Zoe Christian Fellowship is located at 1111 Easton Road (Route 611), in Warrington, PA. We look forward to meeting you.

Sunday Morning Series - Under the Surface - Out of Sync - Part II

Text:  Numbers 11:1-3

Last week, we noted the three areas we can align ourselves with:

1.  God through the Holy Spirit
2.  Our flesh
3.  Satan's kingdom.

How do we know if we're out of sync with God?

When we complain about...

1.  Notice it was the people NOT Moses that were complaining. The Israelites complained when there was too much water (the Red Sea), when there wasn't any water (in the desert), about the food God provided, etc. They complained so much that the Lord's anger was aroused and fire consumed some on the outskirts of the group. The people cried out to Moses, so Moses prayed.

God has labeled certain things as harmful and to be avoided. He also said to hold onto what is good. In scripture we're told to rejoice always, and again I say rejoice. If we're complaining, we're not rejoicing.

When we despise blessings...

1.  Exodus 12:38 tells us they were a mixed multitude. People from other nations were in the crowd, not just Israelites. The people had such intense cravings for meat that they wept. Although they had begged God to deliver them from Egyptian slavery, now they were "remembering" the various foods in Egypt. Have we ever had a situation where we remember things as better than what they were?

The thing you yield to will lead you to weep or rejoice, to be angry or pleased, to have hope or despair, etc.

Sunday Morning Series - Under the Surface - "In Sync"

Text:  Romans 12:9-21

What is In Sync?

When working in the church office, my phone is connected to the WiFi there. However, when I go into the sanctuary, I have to get out of that WiFi and into the one used there. If I don't, I can't control and lights or the thermostat. The two WiFi's are not in sync.

Now, if I want to study and switch between devices, there's a way to sync all of them. I can use my phone, the iPad, or the desktop computer.

Romans 12:9 talks about how we stay in sync with God.

1.  "Let love be..." - without hypocrisy. Putting on a show of love in front of people and then talking against them when we're away, is not love.

2.  Abhor - means to utterly detest. This word is used only once in the New Testament and refers to detesting evil so much that you must separate yourself from it.

3.  Evil - comes from the Greek word, "poneros." Evil is anything that is full of destruction, disaster, harm, or danger.

4.  Instead we are to Cling - It means to glue or cement something together, a permanent connection.

5.  Good - that which is good in benefit or effect.

6.  We can be synced to one of three things:

     A.  God, through the Holy Spirit
     B.  Our flesh nature
     C.  Satan's kingdom

How do we know we're "in sync" with God? To hear the entire message, please visit our website and click on the Listen Tab. You can listen online, download it to your MP3 player, or podcast.

Sunday Morning Series - Under the Surface - Troubled?

Text John 16:33 and Others

Tribulation - Things from outside that come against us such as persecution.

Troubles - Things from inside us involving the past and present. Situations with jobs, finances, relationships, etc.

Anxiety - Things that are coming up in the future.

John 14:27 tells us, "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled neither let it be afraid."

The purpose of this kind of tribulation is to get us to:

1.  Stop believing
2.  Start fearing
3.  Not to trust

These are the enemy's goals. He wants to rob us of our peace.

When Jairus came to Jesus, he was in a desperate situation. His daughter was dying. Jesus agreed to go with him and heal her. They're interrupted by the woman with the issue of blood, and she tells Jesus her life story. While this is going on, a messenger comes to Jairus and tells him his daughter is dead. Jesus stopped and commanded him to not fear. Jairus obeyed, and his daughter was raised from the dead. (See Mark 5:22-43.)

In this passage we see that all our situations don't need to be fixed in order to have peace. All we need is Jesus. He gave Jairus His word, and the man received it.

Sunday Morning Series - Under the Surface - Love Never Fails

Text:  I Corinthians 13:1-9

What is God's love?

Kind

This comes from the Greek word, "chresteuomai (from chrestos) - to show oneself useful, act benevolently, to be kind. It's the same word used in Ephesians 4:32, Matthew11:30 and Romans 2:4. Putting on a smile and not saying what you feel is not being "kind." It isn't suppressing your feelings, but looking at something with a long-range view.

A child goes through various stages, and we work with them to get through each one. In the same way, we put up with the inconvenience to ourselves for the benefit of others and help them through a particular level in their journey toward maturity.

Long Suffering

This word refers to patient restraint of anger - a long time before you get to anger. What makes love able to do this? It is not tuned into self. It is selfless, hope filled, growth-seeking love.

Sunday Morning Series - Under the Surface - How Should I Respond?

Text:  Romans 2:1-16 & Various

There are people in our lives that are difficult. How do we deal with them? There are three groups of difficult people:

1.  Selfish believers (also known as carnal believers)
2.  Selfish heathen.
3.  Vessels of Wrath

Jesus' encounters with the second group were few or just not recorded. However, He did have many with the first and third groups. The response to each group will be different.

Vessels of Wrath

There are numerous examples in scripture.

1.  I Kings 22:1-28 - Ahab was a vessel of wrath, repented, and then didn't end well.

2.  Solomon - I Kings 11:1-25 - With all his God-given wisdom, he married and kept concubines from cultures that served other gods. When he was old, he bowed to their pressure and constructed heathen temples and introduced false worship into the nation. He finally came to his senses and returned to the Lord.

Vessels of wrath face God's judgment. We should not get in the way when this happens except to intercede in prayer.

Selfish Believers

It is against their newborn nature to act this way. They act on their own self interest exclusively or primarily. The examples in the  Word show us we are not to allow that to go on unaddressed.

Examples of believers who were selfish:

1.  David - the prophet confronted him about his sin,and he repented.
2.  Peter - Jesus rebuked him and said, "Get thee behind me, Satan..."

Selfish Heathen

It is their nature to act this way (Romans 1:18-19, 7:14, and 8:7). You cannot deal with the symptoms (the actions). You must deal with the root.

Their nature must be changed. Response: I should direct them in the way of a changed inner nature and quite trying to get them to stop sinning.

Sunday Morning Series - Under the Surface - Let Us Love

Text:  I John 4:7-16

Loving - I John 4:7-16

1.  Love is of God.

2.  Everyone who loves is born of God.

3.  And knows God.

4.  To not walk in the way of love is to walk in the way of not knowing God.

5.  Why did God love us?

John is talking about loving our brothers and sisters in Christ. The Bible also talks about false brethren. How do we know if someone isn't a genuine brother?

1.  They promote themselves and their agenda.
2.  They suppress the truth.
3.  They suppress the gifts of others.

A few weeks ago, we asked the question, "What is the opposite of love?" The instinct of many is to say, "hate." However, God is love, and yet He said there were 7 things He hates. He also said, "Jacob have I loved, but Esau I have hated." So, "hate" cannot be the correct answer.

The opposite of love is, "fear." (I John 4:17-19). Fearing is not trusting God. Verse 18 says, "There is no fear in love..."

So, how are we to understand this in our lives here?

Sunday Morning Series - Under the Surface - Loving Who?

Text:  I John 3:10-4:6 and Various

Know What Is In You!

1.  The love of God is in you.
2.  Just because something is in us, doesn't mean it is at your disposal. There are things that have to be drawn out.
3.  Proverbs 20:5

Operate in Love

1. Loving our brother (and sister) is not an option.
2. Cain murdered his brother, Abel, because he found favor with God through his obedience.
3. Walking in love is so important in God's eyes. If we hate our brother, we're considered a murderer. How do we develop the love walk?

   A.  Get out of selfishness.
   B.  Get into compassion.
   C.  Find  God's mercy.
   D.  Love your brother.

What is the difference between hating your brother and responding to a vessel of wrath?

Sunday Morning Series - Under the Surface - Vessels of Wrath

Text:  Romans 9:1-29 and various

People Who Reject God - Romans 9:1-13

Paul writes that he has great sorrow and continual grief. He started out preaching to the Jews of his day, but they rejected Jesus. Paul feels this way because he knows the condition rejection of God brings upon people.

In the Old Testament, God accepted Jacob and rejected Esau while they were still in the womb. God has a different perspective than we do. He knows the choices we will make before we make them. He is outside time and can see from the beginning to the end. Still, He gives people the opportunity to obey Him.

Romans 9:14-29

God had a plan on how to release Israel from the bondage of Egypt. Pharoah could have let them go willingly, but refused. So, God struck at the very gods the Egyptians worshiped: the Nile river, frogs, etc. By choosing to reject the way of God, he also chose to  be used to demonstrate the power of God.

Why does God still find fault with Pharaoh and others who go in a direction that God has planned for?

Sunday Morning Series - Under the Surface - Moved With Compassion

Text:  Jude 1:20-23 and Various

What's the difference between the compassion and love of God?

What Jesus Taught

In Matthew 18:23-35, we have the story of the unforgiving servant. We're not going through the entire passage, but focusing on one aspect. The servant was forgiven much, but he refused to forgive someone of a much smaller amount. He got into trouble because of his lack of compassion.

In Luke 10:30-37, the story of the Good Samaritan is told. The man had mercy on the victim of a robbery.

Luke 15:20 tells us about the Prodigal Son. The father didn't chase after the son, but when he returned, he had compassion on him.

What are the three ways Jesus moved on behalf of others?

1.  Faith on the part of the receiver.
2.  Compassion
3.  A combination of faith and compassion.

Jesus had compassion in some cases, but always had love. To hear the entire message, please go to our website and click on the Listen Tab. You can listen online, download it to your MP3 player or podcast.

Sunday Morning Series - Under the Surface - Good Action But Wrong Motivation

Text:  Acts 4:32-5:11

A.  Know Why Something Is Done - Acts 4:32-35

     1.  The church at Jerusalem had all things in common. This is not how the church was commanded to operate. It was never done again in scripture. It was done to fill a temporary need.

B.  Know That Something is Done - Acts 4:36-37

      1.  Barnabas sold an extra piece of land, not his home.
      2.  He was motivated to help promote the revival that had begun in the city.
      3.  As a result, he received recognition.

           a.  This did not take away his reward.
           b.  Recognition wasn't his motivation for what he did.

C.  Should I Know Why Too?  - Acts 5:1-11

     1.  Ananias and Sapphira desired to help, but they also desired something more.
     2.  While the property and money remained in their hands, it was under their control. They
could have given part or all of it.

What motivated Ananias and Sapphira to lie?
