Sunday Morning Series - Victory for Doubters - Changing Course

Text: II Chronicles 24

Joash did what was right in the sight of the Lord all the days of Jehoiada the priest. Does this mean what he did was not genuine or sincere?

A little further down in the chapter, we see Joash "set his heart" on repairing the temple and ordered the priests to collect funds for the project. When things didn't go as fast as he wanted, he called Jehoida to task. So, we see that he not only listened to Jehoida, but also desired to do what was right.

Jehoida had tremendous influence for good on Joash. As long as he was around, Joash followed God.

After Jehoida's death, the leaders of Judah came to Joash and urged him to allow idol worship. Joash listened to them and granted their request. He stopped doing what was right and got on a wrong path. It's important to stay around people of like faith, who will influence you to follow the Lord.

God sent the prophet, Zechariah, who was Jehoida's son, to warn Joash. The king did not take kindly to the rebuke and had the prophet stoned.

As a result, an inferior Syrian army came against Judah and destroyed all the leaders of the people. Joash was wounded. Some of the people were angry and killed him. He was not given the honor of being buried with the kings.

Joash started off well, but did not continue following God. As a result, he did not prosper and lost the blessing of God and his life.

Sunday Morning Series - Victory for Doubters - What Was That Again?

Text: James 1:12-27

How long do you have to walk in a truth before you're considered as "continuing?" ALWAYS!<p>

Not continuing is a cause of defeat, but not the only cause. Today, we'll be looking at this particular reason people fail.

According to James 1:25, the one who is blessed: 1) looks into the perfect law of liberty, 2) continues in it, 3) doesn't forget the things they hear, and 4) acts upon what they've heard.

NUGGET: A forgetful hearer is not one who doesn't remember but one who doesn't continue.

What causes forgetful hearing?

1) Difficulty - It's so hard. When I was in college, we trained in all kinds of weather. To stay motivated as a runner, we'd challenge ourselves. A friend and I decided the one who started wearing sweats instead of shorts first would be the loser. We addressed difficulty by making something hard even harder. When the temperature went from -10 degrees to +5 degrees, it seemed easy. We were conditioned to run in the coldest weather.

2) Dissuaded - Other people deter us by advice or persuasion; persuade not to do something.

3) Disbelief - We hear the Word, but do not receive it.

4) Disregard - We hear the Word, acknowledge its truth, but do our own thing.

5) Neglect - We don't follow through.

6) Lack of understanding - We hear the Word, but don't understand it.

7) Failure - Someone might say, "I tried that already," or "I've done that, and it's not working."

Qualities we need to continue:

1) Be swift to hear.

2) Be slow to speak.

3) Be slow to wrath.

Sunday Morning Series - Victory For Doubters - I Can See It

Text: John 8:31-32

Head faith is not heart faith. Belief in your head won't get your prayers answered.

John 8:32 tells us the truth will set us free. Yet, if we read it in context, we see that once we hear the truth, we must choose whether to meditate on it or not, embrace it or not, believe it or not. Just because I hear a truth doesn't mean I know or understand it. If we do not believe with the heart, the truth will not set us free.

Another mistaken idea is if we have a desire for something that's the same as having faith. We can desire to lose weight, but if we don't eat right and exercise, it won't happen.

Having a need is not the same as having faith. I've heard people say, "Well, God knows what I need." That's head faith. There's no power there.

When the woman with the issue of blood sought to touch the hem of Jesus' garment, she saw herself as healed the moment she connected with that cloth. She'd heard Jesus healed, she believed He would heal her, and she put her faith in action.

Hear, understand, believe, see, and don't doubt.

Sunday Morning Series - Victory for Doubters - Distractions

Text: Luke 10:38-42

Jesus comes to Bethany, and Martha jumps at the chance to invite Him to her home. We're not sure if this was a spur of the moment invitation or planned. I tend to think it was the former.

Now Martha has invited Jesus to dine, but expects her sister, Mary, to help with the cooking and serving. When Mary hangs out with Jesus and the others instead, Martha is more than a little upset. While Mary is soaking in Jesus' teaching, Martha is seething.

The Word tells us that "Martha was distracted with much serving." Is serving wrong? No. When does it get to be too much? Martha is on the path of a doubter. She's critical of Mary and Jesus, judging their motives, and missing His teaching.

How do I know if I'm distracted and over-serving? I can't just sit and hear the Word. My mind is running in so many directions that I can't concentrate. I get mad at others who choose to make the Word a priority. I make excuses for my need to always work for Jesus, and hardly worship, pray, or fellowship with Him. Jesus does many things I don't understand, and I get mad.

For Martha, the honor was having Jesus in her home. For Mary, it was having Jesus' words in her heart.
