Sunday Morning Series - Boundaries - You Said What?

Text:  Matthew14:22-33

This passage of scripture is familiar to many people. Jesus dismisses the crowds and tells  the disciples to cross the sea ahead of Him. When the boat is in the middle of the sea, the wind and waves are hindering their progress.

They see someone walking on the water and think it's a ghost. Jesus identifies Himself. Notice, it's the fourth watch - between 3 AM and 6 AM. Peter speaks out and asks the Lord to bid him come if it's really Him. Jesus says, "Come." It wasn't a command, but merely a response to Peter's request.

As long as Peter kept his eyes on Jesus, he also walked on the water toward Him. When he looked at his circumstances (wind and waves), he began to sink and  cried out for the Lord to save him.

He stepped out of the boundaries of faith. Faith will get you started, but doubt will  keep you from finishing.

So, what's outside of our boundaries?

1.  Considering  anything else except what Jesus said.
2.  Looking to anything but what Jesus said.
3.  Doubting anything that Jesus said.
4.  Adding to anything that Jesus said.

According to Jesus, this is putting faith into the doubting arena.

Sunday Morning Series - Boundaries - Evil Words

Text:  Numbers 24:1 - 25:18

Today, we're finishing our study of Balaam. He's a bad guy in the Bible, but God still uses him. Why? God is merciful and doesn't want anyone to perish. He wants to draw Balaam back to Himself. Unfortunately, Balaam is too focused on the reward of evil.

God has forbidden Balaam to curse the Israelites, which makes Balak angry. Instead of cursing Israel, Balaam speaks words of blessing. However, he gives Balak some advice on how to bring about Israel's downfall: send your women to attract their men and lead them into idolatry.

God gave Balaam boundaries, but he went past them. When the enemy can't pronounce a curse on you, he will try to lead you into one.

During this Christmas season, we invite you to our Christmas Candlelight Service on 12/24/19, at 6:00 PM. Why not take some time away from the hectic preparations and experience the peace and joy of celebrating Jesus' birth?

Sunday Morning Series - Boundaries - Meeting God

Text:  Numbers 22:1-23:26

This is a story most believers know about, but they don't often study. It's somewhat confusing because they have a hard time figuring out if Balaam was a good guy or a bad guy.

At this point in history, Israel's victories over the Amorites and King Og of Bashon terrified the Midianites and Moabites. This fear caused them to band together to defend their territory. Somehow, Balak knows about Balaam, of Pethor. This area is about 400 miles from Moab.

Balak sends out messengers to hire Balaam to curse the Israelites. Balaam tells them he must ask God what to do. Apparently, he's accustomed to hearing from God at night. He seeks permission from God to go with the men, but God says, "No."

Balaam is the opposite of Moses. For every genuine prophet, there's a counterfeit. A commentary the Jewish people use for the Talmud considers him a sorcerer. Moses was commissioned to do something by God, while Balaam is asking permission to do something.

The enemy always throws some truth in with a lie. How can we tell if what a person is saying is of God or not? To hear the full message, please visit our website and click on the Media Tab. You can listen online, download it to your MP3 player, or podcast.

If you're visiting in the area during this Christmas season or longing for more of God in your life, we invite you to our Sunday Morning Service at 10:00 AM. Zoe Christian Fellowship us located at 1111 Easton Rd. (Route 611), in Warrington, PA. We look forward to meeting you!

Sunday Morning Series - Boundaries - Blueprint

Text:  Joshua 6:1-7:1

The city of Jericho was the oldest city with a wall. Yet, it was only 6 - 9 acres. One acre is slightly less than part of a football field. So, Jericho was equivalent to about 7 1/2 football fields. Just to give you another reference point, Longwood Gardens here in Pennsylvania is 1,000 acres. The wall itself was 5 - 6 1/2 feet thick and about 12 feet high.

Jericho and Ai were strategic to the Israelites because taking these two locations would effectively cut the Promised Land in half. Jericho had about one million people, who lived in villages surrounding the city. When there was threat of attack, they'd retreat behind its walls.

The wall was an obstacle the Israelites had no way of conquering in their own strength. God gave them a blueprint on how to take the city:

1.  Who - the men of War and Joshua
2.  With the Ark of the Covenant
3.  Once every day for six days they were to walk around the wall in silence. Knowing the dimensions of the city, this would only take 10 minutes.
4.  7 Priests will each bear or carry a trumpet.
5.  On the 7th day, they were to walk around the city 7 times.
6.  A long blast of the trumpets signals the people to shout.
7.  They were then instructed to kill every man, woman, child in the city with the exception of Rahab and her family because she assisted the spies.
8.  They were also told not to take the stuff. If it breathed, kill it. If it burns, burn it. If its worth a great deal (like gold and other metals), give it to God.

What kind of blueprint does God give us? We're each different, and He has a plan.

Sunday Morning Series - Boundaries - The Cloud

Text:  Exodus 13:11-14:31

God is into boundaries (promised land) and restrictions (Exodus 23:31).

In our text, we see the Law of the Firstborn (verses 11-16). Why was the donkey treated differently? Donkeys were considered unclean animals, but they could be redeemed by sacrificing a lamb in their place. The owner of the firstborn male donkey had to decide if he wanted to pay the price to redeem it. The Israelites were instructed to tell their children about how a lamb was sacrificed for the firstborn male child. This is a picture of us (the donkey) and our Redeemer, Jesus, the lamb of God.

When the Israelites left Egypt, the Lord took them the long way. They weren't ready to face the battles in the Promised Land. They left Egypt with boldness, but when the pressure came they were afraid. The pressure came in the form of the Egyptian army chasing them. It looked like they were trapped, but God had a plan.

Moses encouraged the people not to fear because God was with them, and they would see the Egyptians no more. He was using a principle we see in the New Testament: declaring those things which be not as though they were.

The pillar of fire by night and the cloud by day led them. When the Egyptians came after them, the cloud/pillar moved behind the Israelites. While it was light for the Israelites, it was darkness for the Egyptians.

As long as the Israelites stayed with the cloud during the day and the pillar of fire by night, they were protected. It was a boundary God set. The boundaries of God's Word will bring freedom as we operate within them. They are fixed. God's command against idolatry, not being unequally yoked with unbelievers, and the tithe are examples of fixed boundaries.

On the other hand, God's leading them to the Promised Land via a longer route shows a more flexible boundary. He froze salt water, which is possible with extremely cold temperatures.

Sunday Morning Series - Is Faith Past, Present, or Future - "Knowing"

Text:  Mark 6:30-44

Jesus and the disciples received the news of John the Baptist's beheading. That incident combined with a great deal of ministry made them tired. Jesus decided the disciples need some rest and took them to a deserted place.

Many people figured out what they were doing and where they were going. They ran and got there before Jesus and the disciples. The people were more attracted to the miracles than the teaching, which they needed to strengthen them.

Here they were in a deserted area with no provisions. Jesus commands the disciples to give the people something to eat. They looked at what they had and voiced their concerns about their inability to do so. Whenever Jesus told them to do something, He empowered them to do it.

How many times do you inform God of what you need? How about seeing the problems with what He asks of you?

Sunday Morning Series - Is Faith Past, Present, or Future? - Signs and Wonders?

Text:  John 4:46-54

A nobleman came to Jesus and implored Him to come to Capernaum and heal his son, who was at the point of death. Some translations say, "he begged...," but the Greek word used here is, "erotao," which means to ask or make a firm demand. He was expecting a positive response.

Jesus made it plain He didn't want people to believe because of the signs and wonders. Rather He wanted them to believe and then see the signs and wonders.

He told the nobleman to go in peace, that his son lives. The man obeyed Jesus' direction and headed home. Now Cana and Capernaum were about 20 miles apart. Walking this distance took quite some time. Traveling at night was dangerous, so people would stop and spend the night before continuing on their journey.

As the nobleman continued his trip the next day, his servants met him and gave him the good news that the fever left his son. He inquired about what time that happened, and it was the seventh hour the previous day when Jesus told him to go and that his son lived.

Sometimes people look for something spectacular to happen when healing occurs. This nobleman had nothing to go on but Jesus' word.

Sunday Morning Series - Is Faith Past, Present, or future? - Things That Don't Exist

Text:  Romans 4:16-22, II Kings 3:1-27

Our present situation may seem like it's never going to change, and if it does, it will be worse. The truth is it's temporary. With the Lord, our future hope is assured.

Abraham trusted God with His past, present, and future:

1.  The past - He and Sarah couldn't have children when they were young.

2.  The present - They were both old now, and it seemed impossible.

3.  The future - God promised Abraham that his descendants via Sarah would be like the sand of the sea and the stars in the sky. God even changed his name from Abram to Abraham. Every time he said his name, he was proclaiming he was the father of many nations.

Abraham and Sarah tried to help God, which resulted in Ishmael's birth by her handmaid, Hagar. God made him a great nation, but he was not the promised son by Sarah, the free woman.

Another example of a present situation being temporary is found in 2 Kings 3:13-27. Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, made some unfortunate alliances.

Sunday Morning Series - Is Faith Past, Present, or Future - Don't Let Your Future Be in Doubt

Text:  Mark 5:25-34

So many Christians know that God is able to do great things, but is He willing to do them for me? In Matthew 8:1-4, the leper had faith in Jesus' ability but was unsure of His willingness. Jesus immediately answered, "I am willing."

Where do we get our answers as to what God wants to do for us? Instead of living in doubt, we need to go to the Word to get our questions answered. Jesus says to him, "be cleansed," and instructs him to go show himself to the priest. In those days, the priests verified whether or not someone was free of leprosy.

In Matthew 8:5-13, the centurion states the present condition of his servant and declares that he will be healed. This is a statement of a future not yet realized, but certain that it will be. In verse 13, Jesus says, "as you have believed..." What are you declaring about your future?

In Mark 5:25-34, we have the story of the woman with the issue of blood. She visited many doctors and suffered much. While getting worse and spending all her money, she hears about Jesus. Just because you hear the scripture about healing doesn't mean it will do you any good. You must:

1.  Meditate on it.
2.  Develop beliefs in line with the truth.
3.  Then proclaim what you believe.

Many people ask for prayer, but they won't come to church to have hands laid on them. This is the scriptural way - a point of contact. They want to sit back and do nothing. It's necessary to invest ourselves in the process.

To hear the entire message, please visit our website and click on the Media Tab. You can listen online, download it to your MP3 player, or podcast.

Sunday Morning Series - Is Faith Past, Present, or Future? - Patterns

Text:  ISamuel 17:1-58

David and Goliath's story is a familiar one to most of us, but let's take a closer look at the patterns David recognized.

The Israelite and the Philistine armies stood on opposite mountains with a valley between them. As usual, the Israelites were outnumbered. For 40 days, the Philistines' champion stood in the valley and challenged the Israelites to send someone to fight him. Goliath was 9 1/2 feet tall and an intimidating sight.

David arrives at the battle scene with provisions for his three older brothers. He was the youngest son out of eight boys, which would make him about 13 years old.

His family didn't think much of him. He was given the job of shepherd, which was usually not assigned to a son. When he came home and told them about how he killed a lion, they didn't believe him. They didn't believe him when he said he killed a bear.

While he was at the battleground, Goliath once again issued his challenge. David inquired about what reward would be given for defeating the giant. King Saul heard about the young man who was outraged that this Philistine was coming against the army of Almighty God.

When Saul saw he was serious, he put his own armor on David. Now, Saul was a big man and David was much smaller in stature. David had no experience with this equipment, and decided to go with his tried and true weapon.

Because of what he'd done in the past, David believed God would deliver the giant into his hand. As far as he was concerned, Goliath was a dead man. He recognized the pattern of God's deliverance: first the lion, then the bear, and now this enemy of his people.

What lessons can we learn from this story to defeat the "giants" in our own lives? To hear the entire message, please visit our website and click on the Media Tab. You can listen online, download it to your MP3 player, or podcast.

Sunday Morning Series - Is Faith Past, Present, or Future? - Your Past: Springboard or Anchor?

Text:  John 9:1-41

Jesus passed through a crowd that wanted to stone Him. You'd think He would want to get out of there and as far away as possible. However, he saw a blind man and stopped.

The disciples asked Him who had sinned, the man or his parents, that he was born blind. They've asked a question with two options for answers. Jesus ignored their question because it was based on a faulty premise. Instead he replied that neither had sinned.

Now, many of us have heard this passage taught that the man's blindness was for the glory of God. No other scripture supports this interpretation. In fact other scriptures teach the opposite. We're told that it's the enemy who comes to steal, kill, and destroy. Jesus has come that we might have abundant life. Here are some things we must take into consideration:

1.  Paper was scarce, and the earliest originals we have didn't include spaces between words.
2.  Punctuation was omitted.
3.  Translators inserted all the punctuation, so a misplaced period or comma could change the meaning of a passage.

God doesn't get any glory from our being sick, blind, or any other physical problem. After Jesus told them neither the man nor his parents sinned, He moved on to what would glorify God: the man's healing.

Jesus makes mud from spit and dirt and applies it to the man's eyes. He then instructs him to go wash in the Pool of Siloam. The man obeyed and was healed. The power is in obeying not bartering. We may not like what God said to do, but that may be intentional.

Sunday Morning Series - Is Faith Past, Present, or Future - Dealing With Your Present

Text:  Mark 10:46-52 and various

The present is not be be denied or disbelieved but to be dealt with through faith.

Our biggest problems are what's happening at the present time. There are three reasons people don't get healed:

1.  Disobedience
2.  Unbelief - See John 20:24-29 - Unbelief is the rejection of truth.
3.  Ignorance - You've never heard the truth.

Another hindrance to healing is unforgiveness.

Expectation - Mark 10:47-48

Expectation without anticipation is just talk. Anticipation looks forward to something with excitement. When our faith engages expectation, our mouth engages in speaking.

What are some of the enemies to expectation:

1.  Failure
2.  False Doctrine
3.  Frustration
4.  Friends

Too often Christians waste time denying their own reality instead of establishing the goal (expectation). Jesus never rebuked anyone for telling him their problem. Come to grips with what you face, but then also how God sees your reality.

Sunday Morning Series - Is Faith Past, Present, or Future - Messengers of Doom

Text:  Mark 5:21-24, 35-443

Is faith past, present, or future? When Jairus came to Jesus, what happened in the past had a positive effect on his outlook for the future. He knew that Jesus had power to heal the sick. When his daughter was dying, he knew where to go for help.

He approached Jesus and told him, "My little  daughter lies at the point of death." This was a statement of how things are in the present but not how they will continue to be. If we cannot acknowledge how things are, how can we believe for a change?

Jairus then says, "Come and lay Your hands on her that she may be healed, and she will live." He's making a statement of how things will be once Jesus comes on the scene - she will live! Jairus' belief in the past causes him to believe in a future change, altering the state of how things are.

While Jesus is talking with the woman with the issue of blood, messengers come with disturbing news. Jairus has a choice: give up or continue to believe. How does Jesus handle this, and how does Jairus respond?

Sunday Morning Service - What Are You Willing to Do?

Text:  John 5:1-16

We recently finished our series on Faithfulness. Before we get into the next series, we're going to take a look at the miracle Jesus did at the Pool of Bethesda.

The man Jesus approached had an infirmity for 38 years. Jesus asked him, "Do you want to be made well?" This might seem like a no-brainer since the individual was in a place where healing took place. Yet, just because a person is going after something doesn't mean they really want it.

He doesn't give a direct, "Yes or No," answer, but proceeds to explain why it was impossible for him to get healing. An angel would come down at certain times and stir the waters. The first person into the pool would be healed. Alas, he had no one to help him and someone always beat him into the water.

As years went by without healing, this could well have tempered his expectations. There's something known to do to obtain healing, but he sees a hindrance. How terrible it is to be pursuing a goal you feel you cannot attain because of obstacles you cannot change.

How does Jesus respond to the man and what can we do to have our prayers answered? To hear the entire message, please visit our website and click on the Media Tab. You can listen online, download it to your MP3 player, or podcast.

Sunday Morning Series - The Need For Faithfulness - Surrounded

Text:  Numbers 13:1 - 14:10

What makes people turn away from being faithful? Peter walked with the Lord during His earthly ministry, but in a matter of hours he denied Jesus.

Twelve men were chosen by Moses, one from each tribe, to spy out the land of Canaan. Yet 10 of them brought back an evil report. These weren't just any men. They were highly respected and were selected from among millions of people.

What happened? They embarked on the mission for three main purposes:

1.  To check out the land.
2.  To check out the inhabitants
3.  To bring back sample of the fruit of the land.

They were in Canaan for 40 days, and did each of these things. However, when they returned, they presented the facts in such a way that the people became afraid. Somewhere during that period of time, they allowed their discoveries to change what they believed from God's Word. They became fearful. When Caleb saw the effect their report was having, he stepped up and told the people they were well able to take the land. Joshua agreed with him, but the damage was done.

They thought God was leading them to a land where they were greater than the inhabitants. However, God sent them to a land where He was greater than the inhabitants.
