Sunday Morning Series - Hope That Does Not Waver - Looking Past Hope

Text: Genesis 13:1-18

Hope is always future, but what do we do when our past keeps getting in the way?

Abraham let his past bother him. God gave him a promise that he'd be the father of many nations, but he had no children. He and Sarah are getting older and older.

Then there was the issue of how he told Sarah to tell Pharoah that she was his sister. Abraham had his of failures.

When God gave Moses an assignment, his past efforts to free the Israelites mocked him. He'd failed. His obedience to the Lord did not move Pharoah to release the Children of Israel. All the plagues seemed to harden Pharoah's heart even more. His people complained because their situation kept getting worse.

We've talked about David for several weeks. David didn't let his past affect his future. He never came into agreement with his family's assessment of his abilities or his calling. God made a promise, and he held fast to it.

Paul was another man who refused to let his past determine his future. The leaders at Jerusalem took a dim view of his conversion. After all, he'd been persecuting the church and throwing believers into prison. He could have been discouraged and given up when people came to a city where he'd established a church and messed up all his hard work. Instead, he pressed on and walked in obedience to the Lord.

Sunday Morning Series - Hope That Does Not Waver - Hope and Financies - Part 2

Text: Matthew 6:24-34

The most talked about topic in scripture is prayer. Coming in second is money. Surprising? It shouldn't be.

The Word makes it clear that work is good. Many verses talk about how we are to conduct our business and work life. God wants us to be successful. He wants us to have favor.

Many people misquote the scripture saying, "money is the root of all evil." It actually says, "the love of money is the root of all evil." Don't fall in love with money, but rather love God with all your being.

Matthew 6:24-34 talks about God's provision and how much He values us. He makes it clear that we are His most important creation. God sent Jesus to die on the cross for us, to restore our relationship with Him.

When Joseph was sold into slavery, he turned it into an opportunity. He worked hard and became a highly valuable servant to his Egyptian master. Even when he was thrown in prison for a crime he didn't commit, his leadership qualities made him stand out, and he was promoted. Eventually, he became a high-ranking official in Egypt, second only to Pharoah.

Even after being anointed king by the prophet, Samuel, David's family didn't respect him. They sent him back out to watch the sheep - business as usual. He didn't complain, but was obedient. In every situation, David held fast to that defining moment. He had God's Word on the fact he would be king. How and when it happened was God's concern. David did not allow his past or present to determine his future.

Application: Hope is always future. Get your focus off past failures and present circumstances, and look forward to all God has promised you.

Sunday Morning Series - Hope That Does Not Waver - Hope and Finances

Text: Deuteronomy 7:6-26 and others

There's been much discussion on finances in the Body of Christ. Let's take a look at what the Bible has to say about the issue and how it's linked to hope.

Remember, hope is always future. Many people are talking about the down economy, fearing they'll lose their jobs, worrying about getting another one, and end up developing a poverty mentality.

What's a poverty mentality? It starts out small: saving old bread bags because we might need them, leftover packets of duck sauce from the Chinese restaurant, etc. Soon, we find ourselves saving everything because we fear we may not have enough money to purchase an item when we need it. If we're not careful, you we end up like those folks on TV with a house filled to the ceiling with junk.

Deuteronomy 7:13 tells us that God will love you and bless you, and multiply you. The promise is not automatic; it has conditions. However, that is God's desire and will. He says it plainly, not only here but in other scriptures. If we have a poverty mentality and our hope is focused on lack instead of God's provision, we're setting ourselves up for failure.

So, how do we line up our hope with God's Word? The first thing is to walk in obedience to God. If He tells you to give, then give. Work hard, have a good attitude, and speak about God's love for you that He will bless and multiply you.

In Luke 2:52, it says Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men. When we follow God's principles, He will cause even our enemies to be at peace with us. (Prov. 16:7)

Sunday Morning Series - Hope That Does Not Waver - Hope and Healing

Text: Various

We've been looking at the gap between what is promised and what we possess. How do we jump that gap?

Are we in possession of healing or are we waiting for it? Our confession depends upon us knowing the answer to this question.

What does the Word tell us about healing? Isaiah 53:4-5 says that by His stripes we are healed. Physical healing is part of what Jesus paid for on the cross. Jesus never prayed for anyone to get healed. He spoke to the mountain (the sickness) and commanded it to leave. (Check out Matthew 8:16-17, I Peter 2:24, Galatians 3:13, and Deuteronomy 28:15-22, 27-29, & 35-61.)

God desires that we be healed. From the Old Testament through the New Testament, we see what He wants for us:

1. To take away sickness and satisfy us with long life.

2. He sent His word and healed them.

3. We're admonished not to forget his benefits.

4. Every good and perfect gift is from above.

(See Exodus 15:26, Exodus 23:25-26, Psalm 91:10 & 16, Psalm 103:2-3, Psalm 107.20, Matthew 7:11, James 1:17, Matthew 8:2-3.)

How do we receive healing?

1. Our confession should be in line with our hope. Healing is mine.

2. If we believe God is willing, then our confession is in line with our faith.

3. If we believe we shall be healed, then our confession must direct us to the object of our faith.

The only confessions that have no place in the Scripture is: someday or some way.
