Sunday Morning Series - Victory for Doubters - "But I Said It!"

Text: Matthew 26:31-46, Numbers 14:20-45

Review: The difference between head doubt and heart doubt is what comes out of our mouths.

Jesus tells the disciples that all of them would stumble and deny him. How many would see that as a negative confession (v. 31)? They did not receive His words.

Peter, as usual, verbalized his disagreement. "Even if all are made to stumble because of You, I will never be made to stumble." Of course, he did deny Jesus three times. Why didn't his confession work? Peter believed what he said. Everything that comes out of his mouth proves it. What was the override?

Truth is not always positive, but it is better to know and act. If Peter believed Jesus' words, he would have taken Jesus' warning to heart and watched and prayed. It would seem Peter was a man of faith, but his confession was not based on the Word of God. Wanting, desiring, or longing does not equal faith. The foundation must be the Word of God.

I do not produce faith by what I say. I speak what I already believe, not what I desire.

Sunday Morning Series - Victory For Doubters - Overrides

Text: Mark 11:22-24, Jeremiah 36-38

Review: A doubt in your heart is one that you put voice to. Luke 6:45 tells us that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

In Jeremiah 36-38, we see how the prophet has Baruch, the scribe, write his prophecies against Judah on a scroll. Baruch reads it to the people and elders. The elders tell the king about it, and it is read to him. As each portion is read, the king takes a knife, cuts it off, and throws it into the fire.

When Jeremiah finds out, he has Baruch re-write the prophecies and makes additions. He tells everyone who will listen not to believe the Babylonians will leave them alone or that Egypt will protect them. They have two choices: 1) Go out and surrender to the Babylonians or 2) Stay in the city and die. The city would be burned and its inhabitants killed.

While they proclaimed with their mouths that the city would be safe, their disobedience to the Lord over-rode their faith. We all know about the law of gravity, but we also know the laws of lift and thrust can override gravity. Similarly, direct disobedience to the Lord will override our faith.

Sunday Morning Series - Victory for Doubters - When In Doubt

Text: Mark 5

The needed ingredients:

1) Have faith in God.

2) Speak to the thing a specific course of action.

3) Do not doubt in your heart. (We will be focusing on this today.)

4) But believe that those things you say WILL come to pass.

5) You will have whatever you say.

It's possible to doubt in your head and believe in your heart. What's the difference? What's the evidence of doubt?

Being tempted is not the same thing as sinning. Satan tempts us with thoughts. It's only when we meditate on them and take action that it becomes sin. Reject the thought as soon as it comes. Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, but did not sin. On the other hand, Adam and Eve listened to the enemy's suggestions and acted on them.

According to James 1:5-8, doubting is wavering. It's being double-minded. One who doubts vacillates between belief and unbelief.

When do doubts in your head (mind) become doubts in your heart? In Mark 5, the woman with the issue of blood followed a pattern: She had faith, spoke to the mountain, and took action. Which way would Jairus go? What was Jesus concerned with: the thoughts Jairus had or what came out of his mouth? When the report came that his daughter was dead, Jesus immediately told him not to fear but believe. He did not want Jairus to express doubtful thoughts with his mouth.

Sunday Morning Series - Victory for Doubters - "What Can I Have?"

Text: Mark 11:23, 24, Joshua 7, I Samuel 13, I Kings 12, and others.

The Israelites formed the belief that they would die in the desert. They said it repeatedly, formed a belief, and guess what? They died in the wilderness.

In Joshua 7, Achan heard the command of God not to take the spoil. Yet, when he saw the garment, silver, and gold, he coveted them and took them. A new belief replaced the command of God in his heart.

In I Samuel 13, Saul says that he saw the people leaving, Samuel wasn't there, and the Philistines were gathering. He felt compelled to act. He feared David, and fed his fear by what he said.

Did you know that people can speak negative words to you, but they won't have any effect unless you believe them? How do you know if you've changed direction from believing God to something else? You'll start complaining as a result of your disappointment.

The ten spies went into the Promised Land to bring back a report on the land. They got sidetracked when they saw giants, and fear entered. Only Joshua and Caleb gave a favorable report.

Your words can work for or against you. Joshua and Caleb's words remained in line with God's Word, and they entered the Promised Land. The Israelites declared they would die in the wilderness, and they did. Don't let what you see and hear that is contrary to God's Word change what you believe and what you doubt.
