Sunday Morning Series - The Need for Faithfulness - Do You Suppose?

Text:  Matthew 20:1-16 and various

Before we get into our text, let's look at Matthew 19:30. This passage will help us understand it.

Matthew 19:30 - "But many who are first will be last, and the last first." The disciples were greatly astonished when Jesus said that it is harder for a rich man to enter heaven than for a camel to go through an eye of a needle. They asked, "Who then can be saved?" Jesus answered them that nothing was impossible with God. Note: The eye of a needle was the name of an actual gate into the city. A camel could only go through if it wasn't carrying anything. This prevented enemies from coming in that gate.

In Matthew 20, we have the story of a man who goes out to the marketplace and hires workers. They negotiate and agree to a denarius, which was an average day's wage. Back then a full day of work was 12 hours - 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM. About 9:00 AM, the owner goes to the marketplace and hires more workers. He  repeats this at 12:00 PM, 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM. He doesn't tell them how much they would be paid, but promises to treat them fairly.

When their work day was finished, the paymaster gives each man their wages. He starts with the ones hired last. Why do you think the landowner chose that method?

Sunday Morning Series - The Need For Faithfulness - The Light I See

Text:  I Kings 11 & 12

There are three types of light:

1.  Enlightenment from the Word - This is light that will benefit everyone at all times. This is like a lantern that gives general illumination to a whole area.

2.  Specific from the Holy Spirit - An example of this were the words to Mary and Joseph that spoke directly to their situation. This is like a flashlight that brightens an individual's path.

3.  General Word to the Church - An example of this is the words to individual churches in Revelation 2:1-7. This is light for a church, nation, or group of people united in some way. This is like the sun.

Sunday Morning Series - The Need for Faithfulness - Follow The Light

Text:  2 Chronicles 34:1-33, 15:19-27

In John 8:12, Jesus declared He is the light of the world. Those that follow Him won't walk in darkness, but have the light of life. Even though He is the light of the world, only those that walk with Him will walk in that light.

Darkness has never overtaken light. The enemy cannot defeat the light, so he tries to get us to cover it up. When God tells you to love your brother, it's to let the light in. When God tells you not to fear, it's to let the light in.

Back when Josiah became king at the age of eight, Judah was worshipping idols. They even brought them into the temple and sacrificed their children. As he grew, he wanted to know more about his ancestor, King David. Each bit of information brought more light, and Josiah acted upon it. Idolatry was wrong? He went throughout the land, destroying their altars.

When a book of the Law of Moses was discovered in the temple, Josiah had it read to him. Again, he acted on the new light it brought to him. The temple was cleaned out and restored.

When he was in the 31st year of his reign, Josiah ignored the warning of an Egyptian king to stay out of the battle. They had no argument with him and wouldn't come against Judah. He put on a disguise and ended up dying from wounds he received. He ignored the light, and his reign was cut short at the young age of 39.

Sunday Morning Series - The Need for Faithfulness - Light and Coverings

Text:  Luke 8:16-18

Have you covered up your light?

In the parable of the sower, it's the enemy that goes after the seed. In the lamp parable, the only one  who covers the light is us.

Why would someone cover or hide a light they lit?

1.  They don't like what the light revealed.

2.  They become embarrassed about it. Some people hold back when it comes to issues considered sensitive like abortion.

3.  They don't consider it to be important.

4.  They think they don't have to pay attention to something.  It's a thing of the past.

They cannot reverence the light and at the same time conceal it. How can we keep from hiding the light? Please visit our website and click on the Media Tab to hear the full message. You can listen online, download it to your MP3 player, or podcast.
