Sunday Morning Series - Having Faith in Your Prayers - Corrupted Promises

Text:  Matthew 13:24-30; Mark 4:14-20

Last week, we talked about praying the promises of God. Satan obviously doesn't want us to do this. As with other areas of our Christian walk, his purpose is to steal, crush, or corrupt (compromise) the Word of God.

The promises of God are non-negotiable. Either you fulfill the part required of you or it will not take effect in your life. Just repeating the words is not enough. You must also believe in your heart and have faith in God's Word. Notice this is not about the power of prayer. The promise that tells us to "say to the mountain..." does not say, "pray about the mountain."

Proverbs 22:6 talks about training up a child in the way they should go and when they are old they will not depart from it. It's not prayer and intercession or taking a child to church. It's not reading or teaching a child. It says, "TRAIN."

This promise has become corrupted because people talk about a child they raised as returning to the Lord. The scripture says that when they're old they will not DEPART from the way they should go.

So, how do you train a child?

1.  You encourage the behavior you want to see.
2.  Punish the behavior you don't want to see.
3.  Encouragement should far outweigh the punishment side. Children will respond to the reward of good behavior rather than try to avoid punishment.

4.  Seek the Lord about how to direct the child in the path he should go.

Sunday Morning Series - Having Faith in Your Prayers, Praying The Promises

Text:  Ephesians 1:15-19

Three things are needed when asking God for something:

1.  Does God have it?
2.  Is God willing to give it?
3.  What is required to receive it?

When we find a promise in the Word of God, it contains all of these ingredients. We can either pray the promise or pray based on the promise.

Tip: When looking up the promises of God, use your favorite search engine instead of a concordance. The word, "promise," doesn't appear in most of the scriptures. You'll find better results if you search for "promises of God."

In our text today, Paul prays a prayer. He starts off with:

1.  "After I heard your faith..." - When praying for others, your prayers will be different for believers and non-believers.

2.  "And your love for all the saints..." Christians not walking in love will limit what you can pray for them.

3.  "...may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him"

This is not something we tap into now and then, but this spirit to be with us.

Wisdom - knowing what to do with what we know.

Revelation - Insight into things we thought we knew, but after the revelation we see how much we didn't know.

Knowledge of Him - Not this world or the things in it, but Him. See I Corinthians 2:9-10, 14, I John 2:27, Isaiah 11:2, and Ephesians 3:3.

Sunday Morning Series - Having Faith in Your Prayers - God's Word, God's Promises, and God's Will

Text: 2 Peter 1:2-4 & Various

There are things God will do just because He wants to bless His children. Sometimes I do something special for the grandchildren simply out of love. It doesn't have to be a special occasion. Seeing their delight makes me happy.

Three types of Promises - 2 Peter 1:2-4

Where do the promises of God fit into our prayers?

1.  Knowing God's Word - What promises has God actually made in His Word? Sometimes we pray for things we think God should promise rather than what He's promised in the Word.

2.  Believing His promises - There isn't a single promise that doesn't require faith. 2 Corinth. 1:19-20 tells us that God's promises are Yes. Many people say God answers with a Yes, a No, a Maybe, or a Wait. Yet, here we're told if God promised it, the answer is a resounding, "YES."

What God will do if we obey

1.  God will supply - Philippians 4:18-19

2.  Forgiveness - I John 1:9

3.  Good things - Psalm 84:11

4.  Good results - Romans 8:28

This verse has gotten twisted. Don't blame God for the bad things that happen. He promises to turn those things to your advantage as you trust and obey Him.

5.  Peace - John 14.27

6.  Desires of your heart - Psalm 37:4 - As you delight yourself in the Lord, He'll give you the desires of your heart.

7.  Wisdom - James 1:5
