Resurrection Sunday Message - The Sign of Jonah

Text:  Jonah 1-2 and Various

In Matthew 12:38-40, Jesus said no sign would be given to that generation except to sign of the prophet Jonah. He was in the fish's belly for 3 days and 3 nights. He told those on board ship that he was the problem, and told them to throw him off the ship. He also submitted to being swallowed by the fish. He did not fight either.

Jesus was not crucified as a result of a violent mob. Scripture tells us He gave His life. All through His ministry, they tried to kill Him, but couldn't. When the time was right, He submitted to the Father's plan to carry our sins to the cross. Like Jonah, it was 3 days and 3 nights before He arose.

What happened between the cross and the resurrection? In order to understand this, we must know what Hell is and isn't.

1)  Gehenna - (Hebrew He-Hinnon) or valley of Hinnon. Matthew 5:22, 29, 30
2)  Hades - (Hebrew sheol) - transliterated in our Bibles and means the unseen. Rev. 20:13-14
3)  Tartarus - the prison of the fallen angels (2 Peter 2:4)

Contrary to popular opinion, Hell is not the Devil's base of operations. He's never been there. He will be consigned to The Bottomless Pit for 1,000 years during the Millennium and end up in the Lake of Fire. He does not rule Hell.

Where is Hell? It's in the center of the earth (Psalms 63:9, Korah - Numbers 16:33). When people are said to be going to Hell, it's always referred to as going down.

At one time, Hell was separated into two compartments. The unbelievers were in the part where they were tormented, while the righteous dead were in a place called, "Abraham's bosom." Jesus brought the believers to heaven when He arose. Some made a stop and were seen in Jerusalem before moving on. Ephesians 4:7-10 says that Jesus led captivity captive. They were in a place of rest before Jesus' death, waiting for the price to be paid for their sins.

Sunday Morning Series - Walking in the Authority of Jesus - Having and Losing

Text:  Genesis 3:1-7

What did Adam and Eve have before they fell?

1.  They walked with God.
2.  They had a perfect relationship with each other.
3.  The Garden.
4.  Peace.

What the enemy did:

1.  He distorted what God said.
2.  He brought distrust into their relationship with God and each other.
3.  He distracted them from the truth of God's Word.
4.  He brought distance between them and God. They hid from God.
5.  They were displaced as a result. The Lord moved them out of the Garden.

I Samuel 9 & 11

Saul was called and anointed to be king over Israel. Instead of obeying God, he went his own way. Many people say they have nothing. This means they've been made unaware of what God has done. If we don't know we have something valuable, we won't know to guard it. Once we have something the enemy fears or knows is valuable, we become a target.

Saul's Loss

1. The Mission (I Samuel 15:1-3) - The Lord sent him on a mission, but it got distorted.
2. The thoughts to distrust God's Word came.
3. His eyes were distracted from the direction of God.
4. His relationship with God grew more distant.
5. Saul became rejected and displaced.

Sunday Morning Series - Walking in the Authority of Jesus - "Love Your Trainer"

Text:  Hebrews 12:1-17

Everything good in your life will have some flaws. Anything that has joy comes with a price. Think about all the food shows on TV. Each dish makes your mouth water, but it takes work to reach the end result. You have to shop for the ingredients, prepare everything, and cook it for a set amount of time.

Joys to be gained usually cost, and the greater the joy the greater the cost. If you become weary, you've lost sight of the joy.

In this passage we're told not to despise the chastening of the Lord. All legitimate sons are chastened. Don't think you don't need it, and don't be surprised when it comes. We're told not to be discouraged but to endure it. God can only take us as far as our endurance will tolerate.

Types of Correction:

1.  Internal (Self)

We're corrected by the Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16-17, I Corinthians 11:26-32). This is the easiest way to receive and necessary to become mature.

2.  By Others (External)

We are here to help each other. When we see our brother/sister in a fault, we go to them privately (2 Timothy 2:24-26, 2 Timothy 3:1-5, I Corinthians 5:12-13).

3.  Rebuke

This can be done by the Lord to us or through others. (Matthew 18:15-17)

4.  Subtract

If we don't yield to correction, some things will be removed that we like. Examples: Israel lost their home land, kings their throne, Pharisees their place.

Discover

1.  How I respond to correction will show me what/who I am truly submitted to.

2.  If a good source corrects me, will I cut them off?

3.  How much endurance do I have?

4.  How much correction I can take will pave the way for how much God can entrust to me.

Sunday Morning Series - Walking in the Authority of Jesus - Factory of Fear or Faith?

Text:  John 11:1-44

The Fear Factory

The wrong meditations can cause us to have the wrong beliefs. The enemy wants us to think on loss. Many are concerned about losing their jobs, money, health, relationships, etc. Loss gets us to be afraid.

In this Scripture passage, we have the story to Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. When He received word that Lazarus was ill, He delayed going to Bethany. The last time He was there, the people tried to take His life. His disciples went with Him, convinced they were all about to die. The Jewish people believed that the soul of a dead person did not depart until the fourth day. It's possible they were expecting Jesus to show up between the first and third day. (Note: This is not scriptural. It was their belief.)

Jesus finally gets to the outskirts of Bethany, and Martha meets Him. She tells Him if He'd been there, her brother would not have died. She points to the future resurrection, but there's a thinly veiled question behind her words. "Why didn't you come?"

The enemy wants to get in our thinking and get us to:

1)  Doubt the intentions of others.
2)  Distrust the actions of others.
3)  Assume a wrong conclusion.
4)  Discuss these with like minded people.
5)  Act in a negative way toward others.

Martha gets Mary and tells her Jesus is here. She hastens to meet Him and says almost the same thing her sister said.  When two witnesses say almost the exact same thing, investigators know the story has been rehearsed. Martha and  Mary have been discussing why Jesus delayed. Faith people can be pulled down by doubters. It's obvious Mary is disappointed.

How do we keep doubt from being produced in our lives? Proverbs 4:3 tells us to keep our hearts with all diligence. For out of our hearts spring the issues of life.

1)  If we meditate on wrong things, fear, turmoil, and doubt will be produced. Identify Good and Bad sources. When we're with family, friends, people in ministry, our guard is down, and we can be infected with negative thinking.

2)  Guard against negative meditations. Going over thoughts, ideas, words will lead to belief and eventually result in actions.

3) When we meditate on the Word of God and refuse to allow the enemy to drag us down, we'll develop belief, come to the conclusion it's truth, and be ready for production (saying creative words).
