Sunday Morning Series - Learn to Discern - Anatomy of a Distraction

Text:  Joshua 9:1-27

Verses 1-6 - Things are not always as they appear! A group of people came to Joshua in worn out clothes and shoes, carrying moldy food. They said they were from a far country and wanted to make a covenant with Israel.

Joshua and the people were suspicious. He asked them where they came from, but they kept saying it was a country very far away and never answered him. People who are truthful will give you a specific answer.

Covenant is a 2-way agreement. There must be a benefit to both parties. Joshua and the people did not ask the Lord about what they should do.

Joshua 9:6-15 - These folks gave a great performance. In reality, they were Gibeonites and lived close by. They'd heard God had commanded the people of the land should be killed and were afraid. They devised a plan to save their own lives.

Joshua and the people would have saved themselves a lot of trouble if they'd considered several things:

1)  Was this covenant necessary? God's purposes did not include making covenants with people from far away. They were distracted.

2)  Was this covenant one-sided? There was no benefit to the Children of Israel.

3)  Another trait of deception is to make a quick decision. You must decide now.

Application:

1)  If you feel rushed, it is probably a bad direction.
2)  Don't do something just to benefit others if God has not given you a direction and purpose in it. Don't get involved in a one-sided covenant.

3)  Just because you now realize you shouldn't have done something doesn't mean you're released from it. Joshua and the people had to honor the covenant. The Gibeonites became their servants.

4)  If you are the only one giving in any agreement, it is not a covenant. It is merely forced charity.

Sunday Morning Service - Pastor Michael Perea

Text: Various

While Pastor Steve and Connie were away this Sunday, Pastor Michael Perea filled in and gave an excellent message. He covered the names of God in a way that gave fresh insight. Here's a brief sample, but I urge you to listen online, download the message to your MP3 player, or podcast FREE to get the full impact.

There are seven redemptive names of God which have been replaced with five others. Curious? Let's take a look:

1)  Jehovah Shammah - The Lord is present.
2)  Jehovah Shalom - The Lord our peace.

Phil. 4:6-7 - To get to verse 7, you have to DO verse 6. To accomplish this, your Word level must be high.

3)  Jehovah Ra-ah - The Lord is my shepherd.

Psalm 23 speaks of the valley of the shadow of death. Have you ever shadow boxed? Have you been knocked out by the shadow? This psalm is not talking about the sweet by and by. You don't have any enemies in heaven. This is all about our present lives.

4)  Jehovah Jireh - The Lord will provide.

Genesis 22:8 -  Abraham tells Isaac the Lord will provide for Himself a lamb. His obedience set the stage for God to legally send His Son into the world to provide a lamb for us.

5)  Jehovah Nissi - The Lord my victory. Judges 4:15-21

6)  Jehovah Tsidkenu - The Lord my righteousness. Psalms 85:15, Prov. 2:1-9

7)  Jehovah Rapha - The Lord my healer. This is probably the most called upon name of God. Exodus 15:26

What are the five names that have replaced these names:

1) I
2) Me
3) My
4) Mine
5) Myself - I can do it myself. It's the most dangerous word in the language.

Be sure to check out this message.

Sunday Morning Series - Learn to Discern - Staying in God's Way

Text:  Psalms 37:23-24 & Various

There are 5 main ways the enemy uses to distract you from following in God's ways:

1.  He will lead you into something you're not prepared to do.

God will prepare you for what He calls you to do. If He has not prepared you, He does not place you.

For the enemy to get you off course, he must first change your focus.

Focus Change:  From being prepared to deserving..

2.  The enemy will lead you into something which will require you to put the Word aside.

God will never lead you into something that will make you compromise the Word. He will teach you in the way you're to go. On the other hand, the enemy wants to get you to exalt how you see things over what God has said.

Focus Change:  Exalting what you think over what God said.

3.  The enemy will lead you to a place that promotes what you see over what you believe.

Don't believe what someone says that's contrary to God's Word. Let the peace of God lead you.

Focus Change:  Faith in what you see or feel over what God has revealed to you.

4.  The enemy will lead you to a place where the wrong things are amply supplied.

A prime example of this is Lot. He had so many flocks that he and Abraham had to go their separate ways. He looked toward Sodom and made his decision based on how the area looked. When he was rescued from the judgment against Sodom, he came out with nothing but his wife and two daughters. He even lost his wife because her heart was in that place, and she looked back.

Focus Change:  Pursuing what is easy or rewarding in the short term over what will take faith.

5.  The enemy will lead you to a place of fear, unrest, and uncertainty.

Focus Change:  Being selfish over pursuing love.

Psalms 37:23-24 tells us that God leads in steps, not leaps.

The 5 Guidance System every believer has:

1.  Preparation - Nothing should take you by surprise.
2.  Priorities - God's Word, faith
3.  Principles - These stabilize you.
4.  Provision -  God always provides what you need to accomplish what He called you to do.
5.  Peace - You'll have the peace of God when you're on the right track.

Sunday Morning Series - Learn to Discern - When Distractions Abound

Text:  Matthew 26:36-46

Jesus had to overcome many distractions on His way to the cross in order to stay true to the mission God sent Him to do. When it seems like you are not hearing from God, many other voices will arise to pull you from your purpose and calling.

How do we avoid distractions?

1.  Continue in prayer, but if that's all you do, you'll fail. Prayer builds you up and renews your sense of purpose.

2.  Stay focused on what you're supposed to do. If God has called you to be in the music ministry, keep your attention there. If He's called you to be an evangelist, don't pursue something else.

3.  Remain active. You may feel you're not ready to move forward in your calling, but you need to take action.

4.  Speak what you know. When we're distracted, we speak words based on emotion.

5.  Don't wonder about negative things out loud.
