Sunday Morning Series - The Need For Faithfulness - The Things Commanded

Text:  Luke 17:1-10

This portion of Scripture talks about offense. Jesus said it was impossible to avoid offense. However, we must stay clear of acting in an offensive manner. If you cannot be an unoffended brother/sister to others, you will not be a faithful servant to God.

1.  This includes our feelings
2.  And our actions

How do we handle those who offend us?

1.  Rebuke them - epitimao = "A frank but gentle way of telling a person they have done something you perceive to be wrong." This isn't sharp or harsh.

2.  Repent - metanoeo - A compound word that means having a change of mind.

3.  Forgive - aphiemi - To dismiss, to release, or to let it go.

Unfaithfulness to God is simply being faithful to our own will  instead of His. Offenses are our excuses for being faithful to our own will (desires, wants, needs).

If the enemy can keep you offended, he can keep you out of the will of God.

Quotable Quote

"The more unthankful you are the less aware of God you will be; the less aware of everything He has done and is doing for you. Unthankfulness blinds you. It darkens your understanding. Thanksgiving enlightens you. the more thankful you are, in His light you see light, and it leads to more light." - Rev Keith Moore

Sunday Morning Series - The Need For Faithfulness - "And then One Day."

Text:  Ruth 3:1-4:22

When we left off last week, Naomi and Ruth were in Israel. Ruth was gleaning in the fields owned by Boaz and being given many special privileges.

Now, Boaz was a lot older than Ruth, probably old enough to be her father. He was attracted to her, but the age difference no doubt made him think twice about taking her as his wife. Ruth appreciated his kindness, but what would she want with an old man?

Ruth's focus was on caring for Naomi. As a Moabitess, why would a man of Boaz's stature and wealth want her?

Ruth and Naomi meet Boaz in the marketplace. When two people like each other, it's apparent to those around them, and Naomi was no exception. She began formulating a plan to get those two together. In those days, it was a common practice that a close relative would marry the widow, and their first son would inherit the dead husband's name and property. Since Boaz was a relative, he could marry Ruth as a near kinsman.

There was only one obstacle to this plan: Another man was a closer relative than Boaz. How would they resolve that issue?

Sunday Morning Series - The Need for Faithfulness - Faithful When Things Look Bleak

Text:  Ruth 1:1 - 2:23

Naomi's husband moved her and their two sons to Moab when Israel experienced a famine. While there, the sons marry Moabite women. In the space of 20 years, the husband and both sons die, leaving all three women widows.

Naomi hears the famine is over back in Judah, so she packs up and heads for home with her two daughters-in-law. On the way, she stops and tells the other two women to go back to their families. She's gracious, but it seems unusual that she'd do this after they'd already set out on their journey. Perhaps the one seemed reluctant, and Naomi was giving her a way out.

Orpah returns to her family home, but Ruth declares she won't leave Naomi until they're parted by death. It's interesting that Naomi blames God for her situation, but Ruth never says a negative word. In spite of their circumstances and an uncertain future, she does the next right thing day after day.

When they get to Judah, the barley harvest is in full swing. Ruth asks Naomi permission to go glean in the fields. In that day, widows had little choice on how to support themselves and their families. Picking up a few grains of barley or wheat during the harvest helped them keep food on the table.

God worked in the most wonderful way in Ruth's life because of her endurance. Check out our website and click on the Media Tab to listen to the rest of the story and see how faithfulness in dire situations can turn them around for our good.

Sunday Morning Series - The Need for Faithfulness - Waist Girded, Lamps Burning

Text:  Luke 12:35-48

This parable is unique to Luke's gospel, who recorded it from earlier in Jesus' ministry. Jesus made up stories to illustrate His teachings. Many people relate this story to the catching away or Rapture of the church. However, Jesus didn't teach about the church or the Rapture. He referred to the Second Coming. Notice the story refers to Jesus coming immediately after a wedding. The Second Coming occurs after the Rapture and the Marriage Supper of the Lamb.

The disciples thought He was setting up His kingdom now. Yet, in the story Jesus said the master will intentionally return when not expected.

Sunday Morning Series - The Need for Faithfulness - The Art of Receiving

Text:  Matthew 10:40-42 & Various

Vine's is a Bible Study tool that I use a great deal. They will often contrast Greek words to bring a better understanding. The word, "receive," in this passage is, "dechomai." It means, "to receive by deliberate and ready reception of what is offered." Think about someone throwing a ball to you. You either catch it or let it go by you. Another word used in Greek for receive means a self-prompted taking.

Dechomai is used in 47 verses in the New Testament. Check out these verses:

I Corinthians 2:14
1 Thessalonians 2:13
II Thessalonians 2:9-10
Matthew 11:14
Ephesians 6:17

Not Receiving

In Luke 14:15-24, we have the story of those invited to a great feast. The people received the invitation, but made light of it. They had all kinds of excuses why they didn't accept.

What is the language of the non-receiver?

1.  "I know God called me, but..."
2.  "I don't have the patience to handle this."
3.  "I know I need people to help me, but I can't stand how they..."
4.  "I'm not equipped."
5.  "Nobody appreciates what I do."
6.  "This ministry is such a drain on me."
7.  "This ministry is just not working."

What is the language of a receiver? What kind of rewards do we get when we receive the ministries of others? To hear the full message, please visit our website and click on the Media tab. You can listen online, download it to you MP3 player, or podcast.
