Sunday Morning Series - Walking in The Authority of Jesus - Receiving From Jesus Authority

Text:  Luke 5:1-11

In Luke 5:1-11, we have the story of Jesus using Peter's boat with his permission and later telling him to let down his nets.

Jesus' first request was for permission to use Peter's boat. This had no promise of a harvest. Rather, He was asking for a favor. Peter submits to the request seemingly out of kindness.

The next request is for Peter to launch out into the deep and let down his nets for a catch. Peter protests some but then partially obeys. It's obvious he didn't have high expectations of getting a big catch. Instead of putting down his nets (plural), he lets down a net (singular).

If Peter had failed to do the first request, he would have received nothing. In partially doing both, he received the harvest although some of it was likely lost.

Receiving from Authority is different than receiving from power. In power, complete obedience is necessary before the connection is made. In authority, partial obedience still can result in at least a partial harvest.

Sunday Morning Series - Walking in the Authority of Jesus - Power at Work

Text:  John 5:1-15

This scripture tells about the lame man at the pool of Bethesda. We can observe several important things in this incident:

1)  He showed up.
2)  He watched for the movement of the water, indicating healing was available.
3)  He had to get into the water.

One day, Jesus shows up. He's not attracted to those in need, but to those in faith. Jesus doesn't assume by our actions that we desire to be healed, but by our obedience to His commands. (Even if the actions are of great inconvenience.) Just because people show up in a prayer line doesn't mean they want to be healed.

Once Jesus determines the man wants to be healed, He commands him to rise, take up his bed, and walk. The command was something the lame man wanted to do, but thought he couldn't. God always seems to be able to give us a command that challenges us to submit our will. Until we obey, no connection to the power is made, and therefore no results.

After years of routine obedience, the man responds to Jesus' commands and obeys. His daily habit of going to the pool, watching for the waters to move, and attempting to get in before others, prepared him for that moment when Jesus arrived on the scene.

Sunday Morning Series - Walking in the Authority of Jesus - Growing in Confidence

Text:  Mark 2:1-12 & various

How many times have we decided to obey God, but haven't done it?

The power of sin is like paralysis of a body.

One who is paralyzed has lost physical mobility. While the person is alive, whatever he accomplishes requires help from others. Sin has the same effect on the soul. There is a loss of spiritual mobility. Much good is lost, and the person is dependent upon others. There is no forward movement.

Authority needs confidence, while power needs connection. Guilt from sin compromises the authority given to us. This authority is given, not earned. As long as the enemy keeps us guilty, he keeps us from walking in authority to the degree that we should.

As we grow in the knowledge of what God has done for us to free us from sin, we grow in the authority we walk in and depend less on others.

Power to Forgive Sins - Mark 2:6-10

Power to Heal

The power of the Lord was present to heal them (Luke 5:17). The word, "power," here is dunamis in the Greek - miraculous power, ability, might, or strength. In Mark 2:10 - "the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins..." the word for, "power," is exousia - delegated influence, authority, jurisdiction, liberty, power, or right.

In Matthew 21:23-46, a question is put to Jesus. Note: He answered their question with a question. Just because you are asked a question doesn't mean you are obligated to answer even if you know the answer. They were trying to entrap him. Qualify people before you give them truth. Otherwise they won't 1) Understand it, 2) Don't want it.

God's power over the invisible is never truly demonstrated to the world until they see God's power over what is visible.
