Sunday Morning Series - Give God Something To Work With - Whatever

Text:  John 2:1-12, Luke 5:17-25, Luke 17:12-14, John 11:38-45, Acts 3:1-10

Jesus attended the marriage in Cana of Galilee. Most likely, it was a family event. He was in attendance, but didn't have any responsibilities. When the wine runs out, it creates an embarrassing situation. It's possible Mary, the mother of Jesus, has some involvement in the festivities. The servants take orders from her and obey them.

She approaches Jesus not as her son, but as the Son of God. After telling Him of their dilemma, He responds negatively to her request and tells her His time has not yet come. Yet, the anointing has fallen on Him, and the disciples are picked. Moms tend to notice the subtle changes in their children.

Mary instructs the servants to do whatever Jesus tells them to do. The word, "whatever," means regardless of the cost or anything else. It's not referring to the way some people use that word today, which means, "I'm no longer listening to you." There's no whining with God. Whatever God says to you, do it.

When the Word of God comes to you, you need to put it into action. Lawyers study precedents because they often take on the weight of law itself. At this wedding, a precedent is set that we see throughout Jesus' earthly ministry: whatever He says to you, do it.

Application:

1.  The action - His command
2.  The catalyst - our obedience
3.  The reaction - the power
4.  The product - You get your miracle.

Sunday Morning Series - Give God Something to Work With - Great Faith Is...

Text:  Matthew 15:21-28 & Mark 7:24-30

Jesus said someone had great faith 2 times. One was a man, and one was a woman. We're going to look at what makes great faith.

In Matthew 15-21-24 and Mark 7:24-26, we're told about a Gentile woman, who approaches Jesus on the basis of mercy. He ignores her, but she won't leave Him alone. Finally, He informs her that it isn't fitting to give the children's bread to dogs. He came for the lost house of Israel. She could have become offended or argued, but she agreed with Jesus. However, she pointed out that even dogs get the crumbs that fall from the children's table.

Her worship and acknowledgment of truth caught Jesus' attention. He tells her that her daughter is healed because of her words.

Great Faith

Jesus calls her faith great. Why?

1.  She recognized the source. Because Jesus said the words, she accepted them as truth.

2.  She accepted them no matter what her emotions or intellect told her.

3.  She declared a truth based upon it.

4.  She does not speak words to contradict the truth already declared.

Application:

1.  Accept truth revealed. Don't fight God.

2.  Declare/act based upon it.

3.  Depend on no natural stimulation.

Sunday Morning Series - Give God Something To Work With - The Make-Up of Great Faith

Text:  Matthew 8:1-13 & Luke 7:1-10

Last week, we talked about the woman with the issue of blood. Jesus told her that her faith had made her whole.

In Luke 7, a centurion sends the elders of the Jews to Jesus on his behalf. Why did he send them? Since Jesus was a Jew and they were Jews, it seemed the natural thing to do.

The elders approach Jesus, pleading and begging that he help the centurion. Their request was based on merit and mercy, not faith.

People of great faith are embarrassed by less. Many suggest the centurion changed his mind when he saw Jesus approaching his house. Yet, his true motivation is clear by the message he sends with a second group, probably his friends. They are not there to alter the request, but to correct it. (Luke 7:6-8) He tells he's a man under authority. If he speaks a word, people obey him. He recognizes that Jesus is also under authority, and asks Him to just speak the word, and his servant would be healed.

Matt. 8:10-13 tells of Jesus' commendation. He marvels at the man's great faith. He tells the messengers to go their way and as they have believed, so let it be done for you (the centurion). The servant was not instantly healed, but was whole within the hour.

Application: Do our prayers contain the residue of merit and mercy or are they saturated with the power of faith and belief in the Word, power, and goodness of God?

This is a brief summary of the message. We hope you'll visit our website, and click on the Listen tab. You may listen online, download it to your MP3 player, or podcast FREE.

Sunday Morning Series - Give God Something to Work With - What God Can Use

Text:  Mark 5:21-43

1.  Faith

     A.  Jairus gives Jesus some faith to work with:

           1.  He states the problem. His daughter is sick and near death.
           2.  He has a plan. He wants Jesus to come and lay hands on her.
           3.  He makes a proclamation. She will be healed.

     B.  Jesus responds.
     C.  Faith  always gets Jesus' attention.

2)  Confession

      A.  The woman with the issue of blood also gives Jesus something to work with.

            1.  She heard that Jesus was healing people.
            2.  She believed.
            3.  She proclaimed that if she could touch the Him of His garment, she'd be healed.
            4.  She acted on her belief.

      B.  IMPORTANT: Confession is NOT just saying something repeatedly. It is a proclamation of what you have come to believe.
