Sunday Series - Walking in the Authority of Jesus - "Did You Get Permission?"

Text:  Mark 5:1-20

This passage tells about the man with a legion of demons. Immediately is one of Mark's favorite words. The Greek word, eutheos, occurs 80 times in the New Testament - 40 of those times are found in the Gospel of Mark.

The disciples and Jesus had just come through the storm at sea. Immediately after the storm, they landed and were approached by the man with a legion of demons. The storm wasn't the battle. It just got them to the real battle. The man falls down and worships Jesus.

Note: Demons are not fallen angels. Fallen angels have bodies, while demons do not. They find relief from torment by occupying people, but the person now experiences torment. Fallen angels were involved in producing giants with earthly women. By moving out of their jurisdiction, they were locked up. Eventually, all the giants were destroyed, some in the flood and finished off by David.

Jesus commands the demons to leave the man. The Greek grammar shows He did this continually. They know who Jesus is and ask Him if he's come to torment them before the time (Matt. 8:29). The demons are wondering if they did something wrong and are going to be punished. They beg to be sent into a herd of pigs.

Sunday Morning Series - Walking in The Authority of Jesus - Yielding and Yielded

Text:  Mark 9:14-29, Mark 17:19-21

When the father came to Jesus asking Him to deliver his son from demons, he gave Jesus authority in the situation. Jesus tells him He can if the man will believe. The father cries out that he believes, help my unbelief. He recognized that there were areas where he had unbelief.

The disciples had originally tried to cast out the demon but were unable to do so. When they later asked Jesus why they'd been unsuccessful, He told them this kind comes out only by prayer and fasting. Yet, if we look at Matthew 17:19, we're given a fuller account. Here they're told it was because of their unbelief. Doubt worked into them because they didn't get the desired results. Prayer and fasting doesn't get rid of the demon. It gets rid of your unbelief. Prayer and fasting won't change God's mind, but it will deal with your flesh.

We are most susceptible to doubt and unbelief when our direction starts in our mind and guides our spirit. We are least susceptible when our direction starts in our spirit and guides our mind.

Sunday Morning Series - Walking in the Authority of Jesus - Authority - When, Where, and How?"

Text:  Mark 5:21-24, 35-43

Where does authority come from?

1.  Authority is granted from one in Authority, for operation by those under their authority to yield results within the area or scope of that authority.

If you watch crime shows, you'll often hear someone say, "That's not in my jurisdiction." The authority operates within certain geographic boundaries.

2.  The highest authority you can utilize is the highest authority all parties recognize.

3.  When Jesus ministered to children, He dealt with the parents. The authority Jesus operated in came from God and from the father of the little girl.

We often hear the term, "God is in control." This attitude says everything that happens is from God. This becomes problematic when tragedy occurs. If God was in control, everyone would be believers and be healed. This saying doesn't take into account:

1.  There are two kingdoms - God's kingdom and the kingdom of darkness.

2.  We sometimes make bad decisions that impact our lives for many years.

3.  We've been given a free will.

Sunday Morning Service - Walking in the Authority of Jesus - Under The Umbrella

Text:  I Samuel 2:12-36

An umbrella is for protection from rain or sun (things that come down upon us.) If we step outside of the umbrella's area of protection, we become vulnerable to the elements. This is not a defective umbrella but a defective position.

The sons of the High Priest, Eli, didn't know the Lord. They corrupted the sacrifices and committed sexual sin in the temple.

God rebuked Eli through Samuel. Rather than heed the word of the Lord, Eli chose his sons over God and removed himself from God's protection. Throughout these passages, it noted that Samuel found favor with God and men. The comparison is obvious.

The next phase of judgment is subtraction. Eventually, Eli's sons died in one day, and Eli fell back and died of a broken neck when he heard the news.

How do we get out from "under the umbrella?"

1.  Finding fault in your covering - Whether it's with parents, a boss, or church leadership, you move out of their protection when you start criticizing.

2.  Seeing them as hindering, not helping - We don't always understand the reasons for their actions, but they are looking to protect us from danger.

3.  Exalting yourself as your own covering - You can't act as your own umbrella. So many today ignore the scripture that says not to forsake the gathering of yourselves together.

In nature, lions chase a herd and wait until one separates from it. They come between that one and the herd, making them easy prey. When we separate ourselves from other believers and those in leadership, we become vulnerable to the enemy's attacks.

Are You Ready? Preparing For Miracles!

Text:  Mark 5:25-34

The Word tells us that "God gave gifts to men," and when one of those gifts comes to town, what do we do to get ready?

In Mark 5, the woman with the issue of blood had gone to many doctors and suffered a great deal. She went to each one with the expectation of being helped. When she heard about Jesus, she went not only with an expectation that something might happen but also an anticipation. The dictionary defines anticipation as a realization in advance. She went to Him and acted by touching the hem of His garment.

Expectation without anticipation is just talk. Too often we hear about Jesus healing but don't do anything about it. There's no excitement, no anticipation to move us forward.

When we went to Florida, my daughter and son-in-law prepared our 2-year-old grandchild. They told her where we were going, about Disney World, and about all the animals. She started telling her little friends and everyone else that she was going to Florida and about the activities that awaited us. Every day she grew more excited. She anticipated all the good things ahead.

Enemies of Expectation:

1.  Failure
2.  False doctrine
3.  Frustration
4.  Friends

Once your expectation is off the Word, it takes effort and intention to put it back. Too often Christians waste time denying what is real instead of establishing the goal.

Believe. Something shared/taught will open your eyes. Be on the look out for something to engage your faith and disconnect your doubts. When it happens, what action comes up in your spirit? With Blind Bartimaeus, he cried out to Jesus when He came near and cast aside his beggar's cloak.

Proclaim. If we truly expect something to happen, we cannot help but share it! The four friends brought the lame man. They even tore up the man's roof to get him to Jesus.
