Sunday Morning Series - Victory for Doubters - Recognizing Tendencies

Text: Genesis 3 & Various.

Do I have a tendency to doubt the things of God, or the things of the world?

In Genesis 3 Adam and Eve were open to corrupt teaching. They didn't believe what God said and fell into sin.

Remember, we said hard hearts, resistance to the Word, denial of weaknesses and faults, and doubting God's power all led to sin. There are many examples in Scripture, some of which are detailed in the full message.

What are the tendencies of hard-hearted people? Let's take a look:

1. They are critical of others.

2. They judge the motives of others without talking to them. Scripture tells us it's permissible to judge the actions of others, but not their motives. You can only judge the motives when the person tells you what they are.

3. They blame others for their own problems, dilemmas, and shortcomings.

4. They justify their own actions to those not involved.

5. They recruit allies.

Those who exhibited these traits/tendencies were almost always doubters of the things of God.

As always, this is a short summary. We invite you to listen to the entire message on our website Sermon Player. You can also download it to your MP3 player or podcast it FREE.

Sunday Morning Series - Victory For Doubters - Persuaded

Text: Acts 14

Unbelief comes from:

1) Ignorance - I don't know the truth, but I can learn it.

2) Rejection - I know the truth, but I am in rebellion.

The former is handled by teaching; the latter is dealt with by discipline.

Persuaded - In Acts 14:1-7, some believed and some did not. Those who didn't, "poisoned the minds" of others. In Verses 8-18, the people were persuaded by what they saw that Paul and Barnabas were gods. When I see a thing, I decide how to interpret it.

Jews from Antioch and Iconium came and persuaded the multitudes that Paul and Barnabas were not of God. Paul was stoned and left for dead. The things we see, hear, and feel will not truly persuade us. Decide to believe the Word and God. The fruit of faith is joy and peace.

Sunday Morning Series - Victory for Doubters - Seeing or Believing

Text: Mark 11:23-24, Various

Flesh faith has natural tendencies and is based on what I see, hear, and feel.

Components of flesh faith:

1) Resistance to the truth of the Word.

2) Denial of facts, faults, and weaknesses.

3) Denial of God's power and promises.

Hebrews 11:1 tells us that faith is the evidence of things hoped for the substance of things not seen. Anything we can see is temporary in nature, while those things not seen are eternal.

Examples:

1) Luke 5:4-9 - the disciples with the fish nets. At Jesus' word, Peter let down the net even though they had caught nothing up to that point. All natural evidence said it was a waste of time, but Peter trusted and obeyed Jesus.

2) John 4:46-53 - The nobleman came to beg Jesus to come to his house and heal his son. Instead, Jesus told him to go home; his son was alive. All the nobleman had to go on was Jesus' word.

3) Acts 28:1-6 - Paul and the viper. After a shipwreck, the occupants of the land made a fire to warm the castaways. While helping gather sticks for the fire, a viper attached itself to Paul. He shook it off and went about his business. The natives waited for him to drop dead, but nothing happened. Paul trusted God nothing would harm him. He had a word from the Lord that he would appear before Caesar.

Sunday Morning Series - Victory for Doubters - Faith or Flesh

Text: Mark 11:23,24 & Various

What is Flesh Faith?

Flesh faith can be recognized in many ways:

1) We focus on what I have done. I prayed. I read my Bible. I confessed the scripture.

2) We've done it correctly.

3) Look at how much we've endured. Elijah is mad at God (I Kings 19:10). If this great prophet can get into the flesh, don't we think we can?

4) We start complaining about God coming up short. The Israelites longed for the food of Egypt, bemoaned the lack of water, etc. God supplied their every need, but they still didn't trust Him.

Martha told Jesus if He'd only arrived sooner her brother would not have died. (John 11:2)

5) Flesh faith has natural tendencies. It relies on what we see, hear, and feel in the natural realm. Thomas refused to believe Jesus was risen until he saw the nail prints in His hands and put his hand in His side. Jesus said Thomas believed because he saw, but blessed are those who believe without seeing.

What is Spirit Faith?

1) Spirit Faith focuses on Jesus and not on ourselves. Don't go from receiving by faith to doing something to earn His favor. When we start thinking we might get our prayers answered if we pray more, read the Bible more, or listen to more tapes, we're situated firmly in the flesh. All those things are good and help our faith to grow, but we receive by trusting Jesus not by our works.

2) Think about Jesus and what He's done, provided for, given... Spirit Faith looks to receive instruction instead of defending itself. Examples: Peter (Luke 5:4-9), Paul (Acts 9).

3) Looks at what Christ endured instead of our hard times. Flesh faith wants to look at what a difficult time we've had. Spirit Faith focuses on the joy awaiting us in heaven. (Hebrews 12:1-4, Romans 8:18)

4) Looks to God's greatness and unending supply instead of supposed limits and restrictions. (Philippians 4:4, Philippians 4:18-19)
