Sunday Morning Series - A Heart Condition - Do You Love Me?

Text:  Various

2 Timothy 3:1-2: "But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2) For men will be lovers of themselves..."

These are Paul's last words and contain a warning. In the last days there will be more evil. Think about it. Twenty years ago, we didn't have companies that protected our identity. Identity theft happened, but it was a rare occurrence. Now, these services flourish because evil has increased. Paul also warned the church to guard against deception.

In John 21:15 - Jesus asked Peter, "Do you love me more than these?" Now, Jesus wasn't asking him three times to correspond to the three times Peter denied him as some suggest. In the original language, Jesus asked:

"Do you agape (God's love) me more than these?"

Peter responded using the word, phileo, which speaks of friendship.

Jesus used agape in the second question as well, and once again Peter used phileo.

On the third question, Jesus used the word, phileo.

Do we love God or ourselves? Now, it's okay to love ourselves as long as we don't love ourselves more than God. Let's look at a group in Scripture that loved themselves more than God:  The Pharisees.

They got mad at Jesus for healing on the Sabbath, but had no problem plotting murder on the Sabbath. The Pharisees didn't care about the man but wanted to destroy Jesus

How do you know if you love God? People who love God love His Word and keep His commandments.

Sunday Morning Series - A Heart Condition - Are You Ready?

Text:  2 Samuel 11-12

Correcting

The Stages of Correction

1.  What I'm ready to change. Here I'm ready to obey immediately.
2.  What I'm supposed to change, but I am slow in changing.
3.  What should be changed, but I have resisted hearing it.
4.  What I'm unwilling to change and have decided not to hear.

Falling - the things that get us into trouble

1.  Being in the wrong place. In 2 Samuel 11:1-5, we see David in the wrong place at the wrong time. He should be out with his men on the battlefield. Instead, he's home and sees Bathsheba on the rooftop bathing.

2.  Entertaining wrong thoughts. David dwells on what he's seen and sends for Bathsheba.

3.  Asking for wrong things. Once we've messed up, we have two choices: come clean or cover it up. He chooses the latter and involves other people in his plans.

When the prophet confronts him, using a story, he's outraged but doesn't recognize it's about him. The prophet tells him that he's the offender. David repents, but he's opened the door to the enemy. It causes great trouble in his family even though God forgives him.

Sunday Morning Series - A Heart Condition - Look at Me!

Text:  Various

Proud people amplify themselves not others. I Corinthians 1:31 tells us that no flesh should glory in His presence.

Last week, we looked at Elijah's great victory and then his fearful response to Jezebel's threats. God gives him 3 steps to help him out:

1.  Get up
2.  Get back
3.  Get busy

Elijah handles one of his assignments, but the other two were completed by Elisha. Rather than go himself to anoint Jehu as king, Elisha sends someone. (II Kings 9) From this passage, we learned a number of things about Jehu:

1.  He hangs out with people who mock the prophets of God.
2.  He receives the word of the Lord and immediately sets out to obey by killing the members of the house of Ahab.

3.  He instructs people to throw Jezebel out of a tower. Afterward, he sends others to bury her because she's the daughter of a king. He quotes a prophetic word that the dogs will eat her, but still orders her burial. This shows he operates on emotion rather than on the word of the Lord.

4.  In II Kings 10:16 - He's talking to someone and says, "Come see my zeal for the Lord." Jehu is zealous for his works, but not as zealous for the Lord.

When the disciples came back to Jesus, rejoicing that even demons obeyed them, Jesus told them to rejoice that their names were written in heaven.

5.  Jehu was fearless. Many people who serve God day and night, but they do not focus on their relationship with Him. People will know you by your fruit (character) not by your works.

Sunday Morning Series - A Heart Condition - Edify Me

Text:  I Kings 19:1-14 and Various

The Way of Edification

The word, edify, means:  to instruct or benefit, esp. morally or spiritually; uplift; enlighten. edification - to build, strengthen. (Random House Webster's College Dictionary).

1.  We're told in Scripture to pursue it (peace). Romans 14:19 and 15:1-3, I Corinthians 10:23-24

2.  Knowledge puffs up. Knowledge of self leads to pride. When we're filled with the knowledge of God, we'll be filled with love.

3.  Always edify others (Ephesians 4:29 and I Thessalonians 5:11). Listen first, and hear what God has to say. Are you glad when others do well?

4.  Don't lift up (edify) yourself over others. (Luke 14:8-11)  Don't exalt yourself. You edify others, and God will exalt you.

The Way Out - I Kings 19:1-14

1.  We've all found ourselves leaving the way of edifying others to enter the way of edifying ourselves. Here is how it happens!

2.  The setting - a great victory, strong anointing, wonderful signs and wonders, and overwhelmingly positive results.

3.  Then a dark cloud forms.

4.  Discouragement sets in because of something...

     - we didn't expect happens
     - we did expect didn't happen
     - Basically, we got something we didn't like or feel we deserved.

5.  When we become discouraged, we look to get out

      - We hope for help from others
      - If none is to be had, we help ourselves.
      - Rescuing a person from discouragement is a lot like saving someone who is drowning. The        person is in a panic and can drag the rescuer down with him. A lifeguard must grab the person        from behind and swim to shore. They will often command the person to stop struggling and        relax.

6.  The way most people think they will get out is put there by the one who wants them dead. The enemy doesn't care how it happens. He just wants the person out of the way.

Sunday Morning Series - A Heart Condition - The Anger We Feel

Text:  I Kings 11:26-40, I Kings 12:1-33

There are different types of anger. People can be angry for:

A)  What they did to me
B)  What they don't do for me
C)  What they do to others
D)  What they won't do for others

We can be angry with ourselves for:

A)  What I did
B)  What I didn't do

Prideful - Those who are prideful get angry at others, not themselves.
False Humility - Get angry at themselves, not others.

Both are wrong.

True humility - Get angry and find the cause .

There's a difference between an emotional anger and an anger because a principle has been broken. Anger should be accompanied by words of correction to enact positive change. The humble follow a principled anger. They see a principle being violated and seek to restore it.

Examples in Scripture:

A)  Cain got angry at Abel and God.
B)  Saul got angry at Samuel, David, and God.
C)  Samson got angry at everyone not named Samson.
