Sunday Morning Series - Give God Something to Work With - Honoring the Lord

Text:  Joshua 7

God commanded the Israelites not to take the accursed thing when they destroyed Jericho, but Achan disobeyed. As a result, when they went to fight Ai with 3,000 men, the tiny town defeated them and killed 36 men.

When an enemy prevails, our flesh is prone to fear and our mind comes up with reasonings. Both block our spirit from hearing the Holy Spirit. Joshua is on his face before the Lord and states they should have stayed on the other side of the Jordan. God tells him to get up on his feet. He puts his finger on the sin - taking the accursed thing.  God was not with them when they went to Ai. He did not kill those men. The people of Ai killed them.

The Lord has given the earth to men. Psalms 115:12-18. When Satan came to get the earth, he went to man. Jesus came to earth as a man and took it back. Through Jesus, we again have jurisdiction.

Proverbs 3:9-10 - Tithing is not sowing. Tithing is honoring the Lord with our firstfruits. Deuteronomy 26:13 - The tithe belongs to God. It is one of those accursed things. If you withhold it, it becomes accursed. You cannot sow what is not yours. God has entrusted the least valuable thing to us - money. Bills exert outward pressure and inward desires on us. If the enemy keeps you from tithing, you cannot sow.

If I fail in the principle, does that mean that God will take from me? How many times do your children misuse your money/resources? Do you kill them? No. Neither does God. The men of Ai killed the 36 men. If you bring the firstfruits, God will preserve what you have. We cannot stand before our enemies while stealing what belongs to God.

The same person who sows is the one who has the right to reap. People miss their harvest because they don't know how to reap. Most in the Bible worked 6 days from sun-up to sundown. When you bring your tithe, the blessing is not automatic. The corn doesn't pick itself and go into the barn. The farmer has to work hard and reap it. We have to do our part in the process.

Sunday Morning Series - Give God Something To Work With - When Pressure Comes

Text:  Genesis 29:31-30:24

There was a constant tension and competition between Leah and Rachel for the love of Jacob. In that society, the first wife and the firstborn son were favored. So, although Jacob loved Rachel, Leah sought to win his love by giving him sons. All of their names reflected this up until the fourth son, Judah, was born. The name she chose means, "object of praise, or Praise of the Lord."

Rachel is unable to bear children up to this point, so she gives her maid to Jacob. The first son is named, Dan, which means "he that judges." The second son's name, Naphtali, means "obtained by wrestling."

Leah had not conceived again after the fourth son was born, so she gave her maid to Jacob. As a result, Gad and Asher were born. Leah then bares Jacob two more sons, Issachar and Zebulon, as well as a daughter, Dinah.

Rachel finally produces two sons, Joseph and Benjamin, but dies in childbirth with the second boy. These two women took matters into their own hands. Most of the tribes are named after flesh-ordered behavior. God never told Jacob, "you'll have 12 sons." Only three of them, Levi, Judah, and Joseph, were significant. In the New Testament, Peter, James, and John, were prominent. This is an interesting parallel.

External pressure can move you from what God has commanded you. So, too, can inward desires to obtain things. External pressure can only be effective if there is an inward desire to exploit. Our tendency is to judge the validity of our actions by the outcome that we see, but God judges our actions by the outcome we never attain.

Sunday Morning Series - Give God Something To Work With - Go and See

Text:  I Samuel 22:1-23:13

Sometimes people are failing at life, but they're not really failing. They're just not hitting it in the right way.

In this passage, David is fleeing from Saul and escapes to the cave of Adullum. His brothers and all his father's house join him. He also drew men who were:

- Distressed
- In Debt
- Discontented

Sometimes God sends people into our lives, and we don't see the value of them. What possible good could these individuals be to David?

He hears about the Philistines attacking Keilah, and asks the Lord if he should go and save them. The Lord gives him the go-ahead, but the 400 men are afraid. He inquires of the Lord again and gets the same response. The men trust him, so they agree. They save Keilah from the Philistines, a job King Saul should have been doing instead of chasing David.

It is a poor king, who makes decisions to benefit himself rather than his country. Saul turned his sword on his own people. He doesn't care that David did something great for him.

Application: What has come to you or is around you that you have seen as having no value?

There are some things God has given us in the way of talents and connections that are dormant in our lives. We either don't recognize them or discount them. Always pay attention to the ideas that come to you, especially the ones that come during the night.
