This Week At Zoe

On Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at 7:30 P.M., Pastor Steve will pick up his Ephesians teaching in Chapter 5, verse 8. "For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light."

How do we walk as children of light? Is it simply by being good, righteous, and obeying God? We will get into this on Wednesday.

Sunday Morning Series - Victory for Doubters - The Change I Need - Part 2

Text: James 3

Last week, we looked at the declarations of change. Jesus rebuked a fever, and it left. He healed a lame man by commanding him to rise up and walk.

We also saw in Genesis how God created light, and it continues to this day. The same held true for the land, plants, and water.

Today, we're looking at declarations of direction. Why is it so much easier to declare things to go in the wrong direction? "Oh, I know I'm going to get the flu. You know bad things happen in threes." Who said so? Not God. Man makes up these sayings, and we follow them.

In James 3:1-12, he compares the tongue to the rudder on a ship or a bit in a horse's mouth. They're small but can move something much bigger. The direction of our lives is set by our tongues. We set our direction. No one else can tame our tongues, but we can control them.

The things we expect we talk about. I'm leaving early, so I can stop at the Post Office. We're setting our direction.

When our words are controlled by the Word in us, there is: peace, wisdom, and understanding. If not, we see: bitterness, envy, self seeking, confusion, and every evil thing.

Our words are shaped by what we seek. If we seek after God, our words will be shaped by Him.

Sunday Morning Series - Victory for Doubters - The Change I Need

Text: Luke 4:31-44 and others.

1) Declarations of Change

In John 5:1-9 the lame man has been in this condition for 38 years. Some folks might say this was God's will. Yet, the Word says that Jesus came to do the will of the Father, and He healed the man.

Jesus spoke into that situation, and the man was healed. The same thing happened with Peter's mother-in-law. She had a fever. Jesus rebuked the fever, and it left.

2) Declarations of continuance

In Genesis 1:3-4, God declared, "Let there be light." Not only did it come into being but it kept on.

There were other examples such as Genesis 1:9-10, Genesis 1:11-12, and Genesis 12:1-3. These declarations called for a change and for that change to continue.

Most declarations in the Word are ones of change not ones of continuance. For many believers it is the opposite. Our declarations are aimed toward existing circumstances and for them to continue. A perfect example is people always citing Murphy's Law. Declarations don't occur just because you say them, but because you believe them in your heart. It's easy to expect the bad stuff. Good stuff will draw plenty of enemy opposition.

Some good declarations based on Scripture: "The favor of God follows me." Proverbs 11:27 & 12:2

"I will always be in good health." Proverbs 4:21-22

"The Word of God is mine to understand." Proverbs 4:5-7 & Psalms 119:104

"In whatever situation I am in, I will know what to do/say." Luke 12:11-12

Sunday Morning Series - Victory for Doubters - Will The Real Faith Please Stand Up?

Text: Numbers 13:17-14:12

As we look to understand the difference between believing with our heart compared to believing with our head, there is a certain trait head faith lacks.

What's missing? In Genesis 15:1-5, we see Abraham focusing on the one thing that's missing in his life - a son. He hears God's promise, but his eyes are on the facts.

With Daniel, that certain trait is present. He has no problem trusting God for the answers he needs.

We see the trait present for a short time with Peter. He starts out with heart faith, but ends in doubt.

So what's the missing ingredient? EXPECTATION!

Abraham expected the promise to fail. Daniel expected God to deliver what was needed. Peter expected to walk on water at least until he saw and heard the wind. He went from expecting to walk on water to expecting to sink.

How do we identify whether we have heart faith?

1. Anticipation - with heart faith there is an anticipation of the promise coming to pass.

2. Belief - Without belief, anticipation is little more than wishful thinking.

3. Confess - we start speaking what we're believing for.

4. Declaration - The work of my hands is blessed.

5. Desire - You can expect God's Word to come to pass, but if you really don' want it, it won't happen.
