Sunday Morning Series - Give God Something To Work With - No Specific Orders

Text:  Acts 6

While people like Abraham and Paul had specific orders from the Lord concerning their lives, others did not. There is no record of Stephen receiving a prophetic word from the Lord about a great ministry. Instead, he and several others were chosen due to their good reputation, wisdom, and being full of the Holy Spirit to serve the widows in the church.

Their faithfulness to handle the task kept the apostles free to study the Word and minister. For us, faithfulness follows our vision of how spectacular and necessary my ministry is to the Body of Christ. If I view my ministry as ordinary, my faithfulness will wane. It's our duty to maintain the vision. Many who claim to be burned out have simply lost the vision of what they do in the church.

As Stephen fulfilled his assignment, he grew spiritually and ministered as opportunities presented themselves. When Stephen was martyred and persecution erupted against the church, Philip went to Samaria. He actually preached to the Gentiles before Paul. Although he had no specific word concerning his ministry, Philip obeyed the Holy Spirit's direction in his life.

Nicolas, on the other hand, veered off the truth. According to Ireneus and Hippolytus (two leaders in the early church), he originated the doctrine of the Nicolaitans. This doctrine promoted a mixture of paganism (occult) and Christianity.

Application:  Take the general commands of the Word as specific for you. This includes such things as be faithful, study, pursue wisdom, meditate on His Word, to be a light, to have faith in God, to serve one another, to love one another, to be filled with the Holy Spirit, etc.

Develop a pattern of being told once and  doing it repeatedly, instead of being told repeatedly and doing it once.

Sunday Morning Series - Give God Something to Work With - What Do You Have?

Text:  2 Kings 4:1-7

This is the story of the widow with two sons. Creditors were coming to enslave the young men in payment for their late father's debts. The prophet, Elisha, asks her what she has in the house. She tells him she has some oil.

Elisha instructs her to borrow a great many vessels. The woman was motivated. She did what he told her to do, and the oil poured until she had nothing else to put it in. With her debts paid, she and her sons lived on the leftover.

A lot of our problems involve motivation. We're not being motivated to use what we have. Steven Covey, who wrote Habits of Successful People, said taking care of situations before they become urgent is a trait of those who are successful.

God asked Moses, "What is in your hand?" He may have had a lot of cool stuff back at the house, but at that moment all he had was a rod. God uses what we don't even think has any value.

Just because you've prayed doesn't mean you're done. God will ask what you have. God likes it when what you have is totally inadequate. We have a lot of stuff, but it lacks value because we haven't asked God what to do with it.

Please Pray

Here is the update on Mandy's mom.  They found another intestinal blockage, so she has been in the hospital getting nutrients through an IV.  She is refusing surgery at her current hospital because of all the problems she had previously.

Her current doctors have basically written her off, and recommended sending her home with hospice care.  She has a consultation on Friday at Fox Chase Cancer Center.

Please pray for encouragement for her and for excellent doctors who will care for her properly, not dismissively and negatively.

Sunday Morning Series - Give God Something To Work With - Something is Needed

Text: Genesis 4, Deuteronomy 28:12-14, Numbers 13:25-14:45

In Genesis 4:1-5, we see that Cain is the first male baby, but perhaps not the firstborn child of Adam and Eve. Abel is the next male child. There could have been girls born first or in between. However, the story is focused on these two males.

Adam and Eve knew the proper sacrifice that God required and passed that on to their children. We see that Abel followed their teaching and example. Cain, on the other hand, brought fruit as an offering to the Lord. He actually started the first religion. It's man's attempt to reach God on his own terms.

God accepted Abel's offering, but rejected Cain's sacrifice. Cain doubted God's way, while Abel trusted and obeyed.

In Deuteronomy 15:1-11 we're shown the principle that every 7 years debts with the brethren (Israelites) were forgiven. In year 6 if you saw someone in need but refused to help, you stopped the blessing mechanism God put into operation. They were to give and not grieve that they most likely would not get paid back. God would bless all they did as a result of their obedience. If they didn't, the work of their hands would not be blessed.

In Numbers 13:25-14:45, we seen the Children of Israel believing the bad report of the spies. They refuse to go into the Promised Land. God rejects them, but Moses intercedes. They change their minds and decide to go in after all, but God tells them not to do it. He won't go with them.

What doesn't matter (non factors) as far as God is concerned:

1.  Boldness in fleeing instead of pursuing. They could have boldly gone forward and taken The Promised Land. Now, they wanted to boldly flee the wilderness.

2.  Obedience born of fear, necessity, obligation, or remorse doesn't impress God.

3.  Effort apart from faith won't do any good.
