Sunday Morning Series - Learn to Discern - Thinker or Listener?
Text: Matthew 22:15-46 and various
Just because someone asks you a question doesn't mean you have to answer them. Many seek to entangle you in your words. They did this with Jesus. If He answered yes or no, it would get Him into trouble. In Matthew 22:15-22, He calls these people hypocrites.
The Sadducees didn't believe in the resurrection yet they asked Jesus a question pertaining to it. People will ask you questions to entrap you as well.
In Matthew 21:23, they asked Jesus by what authority He did these things. He answered them with another question. Was the baptism of John of men or of God? After consulting with each other, they refused to declare their position. Jesus then refused to answer their question.
Jesus answers:
1. First giving them the truth and let them draw their own conclusions.
2. After that, He goes for the direct approach.
Don't speak based on CRISIS, URGENCY, OR TRAUMA. (C.U.T.) There's a saying, "think before you speak," but scripture tells us to listen and say what you hear. (Luke 21:12-15)

Sunday Morning Series - Learn to Discern - Let's Make a Deal
Text: Various
One of the earliest game shows was Let's Make A Deal. The host would give a contestant an envelope with money or a prize and then offer them another deal. They would give up the cash or prize the knew had value for something sight unseen. It could be fabulous or a "Zonk."
Whether we realize it or not, we make deals every day. We exchange our time to participate in sports, exercise classes, or other activities. We trade in our car for a new or used vehicle. It could be a great deal or a "Zonk."
People in the Word of God made deals as well. Some of them were bad and some were good.
Bad
1. Genesis 3:1-8 - Adam and Eve had authority over the Garden and everything in it. They walked with God in the still of the evening. The enemy came along and deceived Eve into thinking he was offering something better. This deal not only cost them personally, but it took Jesus coming to earth and dying on the cross to get back what they handed over to the enemy.
2. Genesis 13:1-13 - While Lot stayed with Abraham, he prospered. Both he and Abraham had so much livestock that their herdsmen began arguing. Abraham suggested they separate. Instead of considering the move and perhaps coming to terms, Lot agreed. He chose the fertile plain of Jordan. His decision was based on what he could see. He ended up losing much of what he had and living among ungodly people.
3. Joshua 7:19-21 - God ordered that no spoils be taken from Jericho. Achan allowed the glitter of silver and a beautiful garment to tempt him. He traded a relationship with God for these items and ended up dying.
Good
1. Genesis 12:1-4 - God told Abraham to leave his country and his family and move to another place. He gave up something familiar, pulled up roots, and followed God's leading. As a result, God made him a great nation.
2. Matthew 4:18-22 - Jesus approached some of the disciples with a deal. If they'd follow Him, He'd make them fishers of men. They left their nets and followed him.
3. Acts 9 - Jesus stopped Saul (Paul) on the road to Damascus. After persecuting the church, Saul had to decide between continuing on his current course or giving his life to Jesus. His decision impacted not only his life, but also the lives of countless people who came to Christ as a result of his ministry.
What kind of deals are you making? When you choose to walk in obedience to God, He can entrust you with the anointing. The little you give up is far less than what He has in store for you.

Sunday Morning Service - Guest Speaker Jay Hoskins
Pastor Jay and Tammy Hoskins ministered from 10/9-10/12/14. What a blessed time we had as he brought forth the Word, and she led worship. Many people were healed and encouraged in the gifts and callings God has placed on their lives.
On Sunday morning, Pastor Jay brought forth a message on sharing your faith. His texts were James 5:7 and Mark 16.
The #1 reason people don't witness about Jesus is fear. We've been taught that fear is the opposite of faith, but that's inaccurate. Unbelief is the opposite of faith, while the opposite of fear is boldness. When the apostles were threatened, it was designed to strike fear in their hearts. Instead they prayed for boldness to proclaim the gospel.
Before you try to witness to others, first come to the Lord yourself. You cannot lead anyone to Him unless you lead yourself to the Lord daily.
Merely inviting someone to a church event is not witnessing. While this is good, it puts the responsibility of leading people to Christ on the pastor or guest speaker. Their job is to equip us to do the work of the ministry.
Years ago, people went door-to-door, but that isn't effective today. Instead, when someone engages you in conversation in a store or wherever you go, they've invited you to talk with them. Ask them about their interests. Usually, they'll turn around and question you about yours. From there, you can share about Jesus.

Sunday Morning Message - Getting Ready to Receive
Text: John 4:1-43
We can learn much from the way Jesus ministered to the woman at the well. He was tired and sent the disciples on ahead to purchase food. At that time of day, the area was deserted. No doubt He wanted some peace and quiet, so He could rest.
Along comes the woman, and He asks her for a drink of water. He could have gone off to the side and ignored her, but knew she had a need. Here are five steps I identified in this story:
1. He interacted with the woman.
You have to talk to people you don't know in order for them to become people you do know. Initial interactions can be based on simple or urgent help, pleasant conversation topics, or even compassion.
I often go to Lowe's and make it my business to get to know the staff. It can start with simply asking for their help with something. Also if I see someone loading a car or van and struggling, I'll offer to help them. It can open a line of communication that will later bring opportunities to share the gospel.
2. He imparted something.
Share or give something of yourself. It doesn't have to be money. Maybe it's a word of encouragement, a listening ear, or a prayer.
You have to believe you have something to give. When you're selling a product, you have to believe it's the best. Sow something into them.
3. He showed interest in her.
Find out an area of interest that you can minister to. This may take a few minutes or a little longer. It depends on how good you are at discovering and how willing they are to share.
4. He invited her.
He invited her to partake of the living water. If you jump to this step too fast, people will probably reject your offer. Like so many, when He spoke about her personal life, she tried to distract Him - change the subject.
5. He instructed her.
He and the disciples were just passing through Samaria. Because of her testimony to the townspeople, Jesus drew a crowd. He ended up staying a couple of days to instruct those who received His message.
If you bring people to a meeting, and they receive Christ, follow up with them. Encourage and teach them.
Connecting to Receive - Luke 4:16-27
In the same way, if we desire to receive something from God, we must make a connection. Connections are not based on need, works, lifestyles, etc. but on faith.
Connections are made purposely, intentionally, and the way is known. What connections are you intending to make?
