Special Speaker - Phillip Slaughter
Text: Matthew 14:22-33
What do you value more? Comfort or growth? God has designed our lives so that risks are directly connected to faith and growth.
If you risk, you'll grow. Why do we back up?
Failures?
Criticism from others?
What is God calling us to do that we can't do by ourselves? It's not hard. It's impossible without Him. Winston Churchill was asked what prepared him to lead Great Britain against Hitler. He replied it was repeating a grade in school. The person was surprised he'd failed and grade. Churchill said, "I didn't fail. I was given a second opportunity to get things right."
Where is our confidence?
Our job?
Our abilities?
Our money?
Our family?
Conditions are never going to be right to step out into God's plan. Don't lose your focus on God's Word.
Never allow the enemy to have the last word about your situation. Answer him with the Word of God even as Jesus did.

Quotable Quotes
"Cold words freeze people, and hot words scorch them, and bitter words make them bitter, and wrathful words make them wrathful. Kind words also produce their own image on men's souls; and a beautiful image it is. They soothe, and quiet, and comfort the hearer." -Blaise Pascal

Sunday Morning Series - Enduring Change - What Wrath Hath Wrought
Proverbs 15:1 - "A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." When our words are like piercing swords, we are not using wisdom.
A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds back his spirit. If you're on the side of soft answers, you're cultivating wisdom.
After Solomon dies, his son, Rehoboam, becomes king. The people ask for a meeting, but he goes unprepared. He doesn't ask them what they want to discuss.
They request he ease their burdens (taxes and work), and they promise they'll serve him if he does. He tells them he'll get back with an answer in three days. He then consults the Elders, who advise him to do ask the people ask. He rejects their counsel, and goes to his young friends. They urge him to increase the people's burdens rather than reduce them.

Sunday Morning Series - Enduring Change - Passion Corrupted
Text: Genesis 4:1-17
The Bible doesn't say Cain was the first child born to Adam and Eve, but the first son. Adam and Eve no doubt trained and modeled the correct sacrifices God required. Abel brought the right sacrifice, but Cain brought what he had - the fruit of the ground.
If you have a passion for something, you're vulnerable to anger and bitterness. Without passion, it's impossible to stir those emotions. The more passionate you have for something the more anger or joy you're capable of. Cain had a passion for God, but chose to do things his way not God's way.
God gave him an opportunity to make things right, telling Cain sin was crouching at the door. He declared that if Cain offered the right sacrifice it would be accepted. Instead, Cain killed his brother, Abel, because of envy. Cain's passion for God was corrupted, and it led to offering the wrong sacrifice and resulted in murder.

Sunday Morning Series - Enduring Change - Why Am I Bitter?
Text: 2 Kings 5:1-19
Bitterness doesn't come in only through unforgiveness. If we understand how it enters, we can guard against it.
The King of Syria sent a letter to the King of Israel. Right away, the King of Israel thinks he's trying to pick a fight. He didn't know that an Israeli girl, captured and made a slave, told her mistress about the prophet who could heal Naaman of leprosy.
Did God arrange for the girl to be there, so she could help Naaman? Just because God brings good out of a bad situation doesn't mean He engineered it. Israel experienced attacks from Syria because they'd gone into idolatry. Remember, just because someone in the Bible says something doesn't mean it's true. Look at the person's character. If God, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit didn't say it, we need to weigh the person's statements.
Naaman is finally directed to Elisha. He has a preconceived idea of what will happen when he gets there but doesn't tell anyone. Instead, a servant meets him and directs him to dip in the Jordan river. Did Elisha do anything against Naaman? No,but he didn't meet Naaman's expectations. Bitterness can come because:
1. People fail to meet our expectations (silent or spoken).
2. Situations are not what we desire.
3. Unforgiveness.
