Having Faith in Your Prayers - Well, That Didn't Go Well!"
Text: Daniel 3:1-30
Favor is not something for which you pray. It is something you grow into. This is the story of the three Hebrew children, Meshach, Shadrach, and Abednego. They, along with Daniel, found favor with the King and received promotions. At the time of this story, Daniel was probably out of town on business. Otherwise, he would have been caught up in this situation.
Now, you have these captives getting promotions and much honor from the King. Certain Chaldeans came forward and accused them. There may have been others who did not bow down to the King's image, but they focused on these three men. They informed the King that the three Hebrews did not pay due regard to him. Note: There was nothing in the decree about worshiping Chaldean gods. The King was fully aware the Hebrews worshiped Jehovah.
It's an easy thing to stir up some people's flesh if you tell them they are not getting something they deserve to have. The King is enraged.
How do you know you're in the flesh or the Spirit? Check your thoughts: 1) I should have..., 2) I should get..., 3) I deserve... No place in the Bible says you can break the law and escape its penalties whether or not the law is right or wrong.
The three Hebrew children were given a second chance to bow down before the image, but they refused. They broke the King's law, and they recognized there would be a price to pay. God vindicated them and turned the situation around. They came out of the furnace without even the smell of smoke on their clothes.
Application: Proverbs 16:7 - Do the things that please God FIRST. In the end you will have favor with men.

Sunday Morning Series - Having Faith in Your Prayers - The Way of Favor
Text: Daniel 1:1-21 & 2:1-30
If we spent more time being pleasant, we'd get more favor. Favor in the Kingdom of God is not something automatic. It's something we walk in.
Daniel excelled in wisdom and knew how to operate in a king's palace. He got along with others. His ability to look at the situation through multiple views opened the door for the steward to listen to Daniel's proposal.
Before the problem arose, Daniel purposed in his heart that he wouldn't eat or drink anything sacrificed to idols. He looks at the steward's dilemma and acknowledges it. A 10-day test period is set up to see if Daniel's plan will work. If we are going to be trusted by others, we have to see things from their point of view not just ours. Others will not favor whom they don't trust.
They end result? Daniel and his friends looked better and were stronger than those who ate the king's delicacies.
We desire favor from others, but have we added things that repel them? We use tomato puree for making sauce at home. There are numerous things we can add to flavor it: basil, oregano, garlic, etc. If we were to put in cumin, nutmeg, or pumpkin spice, the sauce would be ruined.
Daniel stayed pleasant - not nasty or objectionable. He knows what's important. Being nasty would add a flavor to his life that would cause others to withhold favor.
What are some bad ingredients we can add to our lives?
Anger
Strife
Bitterness
Self-seeking
Foolishness
Unsubmissiveness
Harshness/Rudeness
Resentment
Unforgiveness
Demanding
Pride
Laziness
Cynical
Critical
Who wants to be around people who exhibit these traits much less show favor to them? If you want favor, get the flesh aspect out of your life.

Sunday Morning Series - Having Faith in Your Prayers - What's Your Flavor
Text: Esther 1:5 - 3:6
The king sends out a call for virgins to find a replacement for Queen Vashti, who displeased him. Esther is among those summoned. She pleases Hegai, keeper of the women, and obtains his favor. Unlike other maidens, she's given beauty preparations and more above her allowance. He also gives her seven choice maidservants and moves her to the best place in the house.
Wouldn't this be obvious to the others? How come Esther gets preferential treatment? Verse 15 says, "And Esther obtained favor in the sight of all who saw her."
What set her apart from the others? There are many types of people. Let me illustrate:
1. Pastor holds up a bunch of celery - "I don't like celery. It's bitter tasting." There are people you avoid because they're bitter and it comes out in their conversation
2. Horseradish - Sometimes it tastes hot, and other times it's milder. This represents moody people. You never know what you're going to get when you're around them.
3. Coffee - This represents perky people.
4. Tasty Cake - There are people who are always sweet, but they don't add anything beneficial to your life.
5. Apples - Apples can be left in or out of the refrigerator. They are okay when you go back to eat them. People like this are stable. You always know what you're getting.
Esther was not only beautiful, but also pleasant to be around. When it came time for her to go to the king, she asked Hegai what she should bring. She wasn't demanding, asked for advice, and showed respect for others.

Sunday Morning Series - Having Faith in Your Prayers - The Favor of Others
Text: Ruth 2:5-23 & Various
How do we pray when what we need is in the hands of others without coveting what they have? People have often asked me to pray that they'd have favor with someone or in a certain situation. I did so without giving it much thought. However, I realized I've never prayed this way for myself.
Have I ever seen any example in the New Testament where believers prayed for favor? No. I decided to look up the scripture references that mention favor. This word is used about 170 times in the New Testament.
I discovered that favor is one of those things that grows. It is sought and found - not prayed for. Favor is not a prayer, it's a lifestyle.
In Ruth 2, she captures Boaz's attention. Boaz does some research and then tells Ruth to stay in his fields. His young men would watch out for her, provide water, and she could glean barley. She's surprised and asks him why he is showing her such favor. He's heard about how she left her homeland and family to travel back to Israel with Naomi. Her care for her mother-in-law, her willingness to work hard and provide food for them both all impress him. Even though she's suffered many losses, her character shines through.
How can we develop the same character? Grow in humility; decrease in pride.
