Sunday Morning Series - The Cost of Convenience

I had a desire to have some cornbread, so I gathered all the ingredients and the mix. Oops, I was missing corn oil. However, I did have olive oil and thought I'd substitute it for the corn oil. After it was mixed and baked, I tasted a piece. It had no taste. It was awful and ended up in the garbage.

It was inconvenient for me to go to the grocery store to get the corn oil. Because I didn't follow the recipe, I wasted the mix, the ingredients, and my time.

In Scripture, we have numerous examples of people who compromised because it was inconvenient to obey God:

1.  Cain did what was easier or comfortable for him by bringing the fruit of the ground as an offering (Genesis 4:3).

2.  David was sleeping the day away when it was time to go to war (2 Samuel 11:2). He was at the wrong place at the wrong time. As a result, he committed adultery with Bathsheba.

3.  Saul because the people were making it uncomfortable for him while he waited for Samuel to arrive and make the appropriate sacrifices, compromised and did it himself. (I Samuel 13:1-11).

Compromise

Definition: 1. A settlement of differences reached by mutual concession, 2. the agreement thus made. 3. to settle by compromise.

1.  Cain gave God what he wanted him to have not what God asked for. (Genesis 4:5-7).

2. David sent others out to battle when it was known to be his job as king (2 Samuel 11:1)

3.  Saul performed the sacrifice which was not his responsibility as king (1 Samuel 13:9).

Each one paid a price for compromising and not obeying God.

1.  Cain murdered his brother and was marked so everyone knew what he'd done (Genesis 4:8-16).

2.  David lost the pleasure of the Lord (2 Samuel 11:27). He lost peace in his home and his wives (2 Samuel 12:11-12).

3.  Saul lost his kingdom (I Samuel 13).

Don't let convenience lead you to compromise what God has said because it will cost you. It will cost you:

1. Relationships
2.  Time
3.  Money
4.  Blessings
5.  Revelaton
6.  Power
7.  And possibly your relationship with God.

Sunday Morning Series - The Need For Faithfulness - "Am I Exalted?"

Text:  Luke 14:1-34

In verses 14:1-6, Jesus is invited to a Pharisee's home for dinner. One of the other guests was a man with dropsy or what we call edema. (One common cause of this is congestive heart failure.)

It's interesting this dinner takes place on the Sabbath. Apparently, they had no problem entertaining on the Sabbath but didn't like healing on that day. Were they thankful Jesus was coming to dinner? No, they were trying to entrap Him.They hated Jesus.

We accept or fix what we love and appreciate. The rest we criticize and denounce. How did the Pharisees get this attitude?

Luke 1:7-14 - The Seating

1.  Be grrateful  to be at the dinner.
2.  Let others be concerned  with seating.

What happens when you stay in the low seat? Note: Jesus isn't against people being  honored by others or receiving honor. He speaks against exalting yourself. The Pharisees exalted themselves above Jesus.

Sunday Morning Series - The Need for Faithfulness - Turn to the Light

Text:  Luke 19:1-27

In Luke 19:1-7, we're told that Zacchaeus was a chief tax collector and a rich man. His curiosity led him to see Jesus. He had a problem though - he was short and could not see because of the crowd. The people didn't care whether he could see or not because tax collectors were hated. Zaccheus was a problem solver and didn't allow that to stop him. He climbed a sycamore tree to get a better view.

Jesus comes along and calls out to Zaccheus. Scripture tells us that Jesus only spoke and did what the Father told Him to do. So, the Father knew Zaccheus. Jesus had his name, where he was, and that He was to go to this man's house for dinner.

Zaccheus is overjoyed and does exactly what Jesus tells him to do. At this point during the encounter, he's a sinner, but he obeys the Lord.

Other people complained that Jesus was going to eat with a sinner. They didn't have joy in seeing one lost come to Jesus. Perhaps they wanted Him for themselves or just wanted Him to stay away from those they disliked.

Zaccheus' encounter results in his pledge to give half of what he owns to the poor and to return any money he's taken wrongfully with interest. Jesus didn't condemn him for his sins. The world expects condemnation from us. Instead, Jesus demonstrates what God desires of us.
