Sunday Morning Series - Victory for Doubters - Changing Course

Text: II Chronicles 24

Joash did what was right in the sight of the Lord all the days of Jehoiada the priest. Does this mean what he did was not genuine or sincere?

A little further down in the chapter, we see Joash "set his heart" on repairing the temple and ordered the priests to collect funds for the project. When things didn't go as fast as he wanted, he called Jehoida to task. So, we see that he not only listened to Jehoida, but also desired to do what was right.

Jehoida had tremendous influence for good on Joash. As long as he was around, Joash followed God.

After Jehoida's death, the leaders of Judah came to Joash and urged him to allow idol worship. Joash listened to them and granted their request. He stopped doing what was right and got on a wrong path. It's important to stay around people of like faith, who will influence you to follow the Lord.

God sent the prophet, Zechariah, who was Jehoida's son, to warn Joash. The king did not take kindly to the rebuke and had the prophet stoned.

As a result, an inferior Syrian army came against Judah and destroyed all the leaders of the people. Joash was wounded. Some of the people were angry and killed him. He was not given the honor of being buried with the kings.

Joash started off well, but did not continue following God. As a result, he did not prosper and lost the blessing of God and his life.
