Sunday Morning Series - 5 Minutes to Effective Prayers - Effective Prayer for Wisdom & Direction

Text: Acts 16:1-10

In this passage, Paul is forbidden to preach the gospel in Asia. As an apostle to the Gentiles, this must have seemed strange to him. He obeyed the Holy Spirit's leading. He was also not allowed to go to Bithynia. Rather than do what he thought was best, he yielded to the direction of the Holy Spirit.

Too often, Christians think what they want to do is what God wants them to do. When God directs them in another way, they question Him. These are tests to help you move forward. God will test you with both people and money. If you're faithful, you'll move to a new level.

To be lead by the Holy Spirit involves hearing, perceiving, proving, and yielding. To be effective we must be mature.

Sunday Morning Series - 5 Minutes to Effective Prayers - Effective Prayer For Wisdoms

Text:  James 1:2-8

The #1 thing we should pray for is wisdom. The reason problems are problems is the uncertainty of what to do. If you have the answer to a problem, you really don't have a problem. There are three factors that make a problem big to us:

1) Uncertainty of action
2) Fear of acting
3) Inadequacy to act

When the Israelites reached the Promised Land, they considered themselves inadequate to take the land. They allowed the above factors to stop them.

To cure the uncertainty, we just need to know what to do. If you know how to solve a problem, you have wisdom. If you overcome uncertainty, fear, and inadequacy, you'll count it all joy.

Application:

1) How I got into the problem is not as important as how I get out of the problem. If your plumbing springs a leak, you need to stop it otherwise you'll have a huge mess.

2) Prepare to deal with the problem. Don't run away.

3) Ask for wisdom, but only if you're prepared to act.

4) Watch your speech. If you're speaking faith one minute and moaning the next, you're wavering and won't receive God's wisdom.

5)  Recognize wisdom when it comes, and then act on it.

Due to technical difficulties with uploading sermons, this won't appear on the Sermon Player yet. All of the messages through last Wednesday's mid-week service are on there. We apologize for the inconvenience.

If you're visiting in the area or looking for a church home, we invite you to our Sunday Morning Service at 10:00 A.M. We're located at 1111 Easton Road (Rte. 611), in Warrington, PA. The church phone number is (215) 343-7686. We look forward to meeting you.

Sunday Morning Series - 5 Minutes to Effective Prayers - Effective Prayers for Peace

Text: Various

What is peace? It can be defined as the cessation of or freedom from any strife, dissension, or disquieting and/or oppressive thoughts or emotions. There are three types of peace:

1.  Peace with others
2.  Peace with God
3.  Peace within ourselves

How is peace lost? It isn't worn away like strength. It can leave suddenly when something bad comes in like:

1.  Bad circumstances
2.  Bad news
3.  Bad notions (thoughts, imaginations)

Peace with God can leave when we fall into a lifestyle of disobedience. Peace with others can disappear when an offense occurs or is perceived.

How can peace be restored? Peace comes to us by  actions born of the Spirit and the Word, NOT prayer. In John 14:27, Jesus told us He was leaving them with His peace. So why are we asking God for peace? Romans 3:17 tells us that peace is a way to walk. God's path is the way of peace.

This is a very brief introduction to the message. Don't miss hearing the entire teaching. It's available FREE at the Sermon Player. You can listen online, download it to your MP3 player, or podcast.

Sunday Morning Series - 5 Minutes to Effective Prayer - Effective Pray for Joy

Text: Romans 14:16-17, Romans 15:13, and others.

What is joy? It is not happiness, which comes from the outside in. Joy comes from the inside out and is not dependent on our circumstances. God's joy is from Him to our spirit. He desires that our joy may be full (John 15:11).

Most of the time joy is mentioned in the New Testament is during trials. Acts 13:49-52 talks about how they were filled with the Holy Spirit and joy.

There are 4 parts to joy:

  The Source - God

The Path - The Holy Spirit

                The Reservoir - Us

The Function - Actions based on joy rather than on fear.

Sunday Morning Series - 5 Minute to Effective Prayers - Effective Prayers

Text:  James 5:16 - "Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much."

Why should we confess our trespasses to one another? When we have to lift something heavy and can't manage the task by ourselves, we call for help from a relative, friend, or neighbor. At times we're struggling with a sin that we can't seem to overcome. Sharing our problem with a trusted believer gives us added support, counsel, and prayer.

Do we confess every area where we fall short? No. If we have a bad thought about a fellow believer, there's no sense in telling them. Confess your bad thought to God, so they won't be wondering what they did to make you think of them in a negative way.

Praying in a way that gets results may seem like a haphazard endeavor. If you give an iPhone to someone with no instruction, they won't be able to take full advantage of its features. A lot of times Christians show up in the prayer room and do whatever they want. We need to go to the manual (the Word) and study it.

The above translation doesn't do this scripture justice. In fact, it might make us think we have to pray longer, pray harder, or pray louder instead of reading the instruction manual. The word translated, "effective, fervent," is the Greek word, "energeo." It means: active, efficient, be weighty in, a force that is energizing. Read the verse as..."The energized prayers of a righteous man avails much." That presents a clearer picture of the meaning.

When we talk about a force inside of you that energizes your prayers, we're referring to the Holy Spirit. He empowers us and tells us what to pray and how to pray by the Word of God and His still, small voice that arises from our spirit.

Without batteries, the Energizer Bunny doesn't move. The batteries are its power source. Without the Holy Spirit living on the inside of us, we don't make progress.

So, how do we pray energized prayers that get answers? When you have a car, it has great potential to get you from place to place. To get the car to move, you have to put the right key in the ignition and turn it on. The key to our spiritual car is the Word, and the ignition is our mouths.

Thoroughly know the Word of God through diligent study. As you pray, speak the Word. It doesn't matter if you're battling thoughts. If you keep your mouth in line with the Word, you'll keep the power source engaged.
