Text: Genesis 6:9 - 7:24
We're all familiar with the story of Noah and the flood. Today, we're going to examine it from the standpoint of prophecy.
In Genesis 6:9-13, we see the prophecy of the coming flood. We're told that fallen angels (called the sons of God) married human women, corrupting the bloodlines. Noah was called a man, who was perfect and just. The word, "perfect" here is the Hebrew word, "tamiym." This refers to bodily perfection, not moral perfection. There were others not corrupted by these ungodly unions, but they were not also just in God's eyes.
The overwhelming corruption of the bloodlines and the increased violence in the earth caused God to warn of coming judgment. The reference to man having 120 years does not relate to lifespan, but rather to the number of years that would pass before that judgment arrived.
Noah didn't have the luxury of going to Lowe's and ordering the lumber he needed to build the ark. He still had to work and provide for his family while completing this project. In addition, his neighbors and the inhabitants of the land no doubt harassed him as they witnessed the ark take shape. He suffered for doing something good.
Remember the story of Abraham taking Isaac to the mountain as a sacrifice to God? Isaac carried the wood on his back and was then laid on the wood. Jesus carried the cross (wood) and was then laid on that wood. Noah has to cut down the trees and carry the logs to the construction site. He did not allow fears or peers to prevent him from obeying God.
In Hebrews 11:7, we're told that he (Noah) condemned the world by building the ark and them refusing to come in. As always, there's: 1) God's warning. 2) Our response to that warning. 3) The world's persecution.
