Sunday Morning Series - Learn to Discern - The Replacements

Text:  I Samuel 4, 5, and 6

We've been talking about those times when God is silent. Until you respond to what God says to you, He won't give you more. How do people react in times of silence:

1.  Some are apathetic. They don't care that God is silent.
2.  Urgency - People harass God, demanding that He speak. Think of when you pestered your Mom for brownies. How did that work for you?
3.  Certainty - In faith you do what God told you to do the last time He spoke.

We already know from last week's teaching that hearing from God was rare in those days. What happens when people and churches stop hearing from God? Sometimes they send in replacements.

Israel was facing a battle with the Philistines, and they're defeated. They want to know why the Lord defeated them? God didn't have anything to do with their loss. At this point, they're in idolatry and ignoring God's commandments.

They get the brilliant idea to take the Ark of the Covenant into battle with them. Just because you get an idea or thought doesn't mean God put it there. God never instructed them to take the Ark into battle.

What should we do when God is silent?

1.  Keep doing what God said last.
2.  Keep learning and doing His Word.
These two things may be all you need.
3.  Don't follow your own ideas.
4.  Don't change for the sake of change.

A lot of people will rely on their emotions. "I don't feel forgiven or I don't feel joyful." It doesn't have to stop you from acknowledging you're forgiven or that His joy is within you even if you're having a hard time feeling it.

Pray for America

In the Old Testament the watchman had an important job. He kept an eye out for invading armies. If he saw one approaching, he sounded the alarm, so the citizens would not be taken by surprise.

Many are warning about the conditions here in America. You don't have to be a prophet to read the signs of the times. Yet, it's one thing to see approaching danger and another to take action. Wringing our hands or taking a fatalistic attitude won't accomplish anything.

Kingdom Intercessors United is calling the Church to prayer. While it's important to participate in our government by voting, contacting our representatives, etc., that's only one small part of protecting our freedoms.

It's time for united, concentrated prayer. Here is a prayer for our nation KIU has provided that you can use in your daily devotions:

According to Psalm 91, I confess that America dwells in the secret place of the Most High and we as a nation abide under the shadow of the Almighty. Lord, You are our refuge and our fortress, our God, in You do we trust. We trust you God to protect this nation from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. You shall cover us with Your feathers, and under Your wings we will take refuge. May the Word of God and the Name of Jesus be this nation's shield and buckler. We will not be afraid of the terror by night nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of any destruction that the enemy may plot, for anything that is hidden will be revealed to our national security.

I confess that no evil will befall this nation; neither shall any plague come near or within our borders. Heavenly Father, as an intercessor, I give your angels charge over this land. As a nation, may we set our love upon Jesus, call upon Jesus, and honor Jesus.

I also pray that the decisions made by our leaders would be divinely directed by you; therefore, the leaders would be men and women of discernment, understanding and knowledge so that the stability of America will continue. I pray that the righteous would be in authority so that the people in our land can rejoice and live in peace. Amen.

Thank you, Margie Grotto Fleurant, for sharing your vision with us.

Sunday Morning Series - Learn to Discern - When God Seems To Be Silent

Text:  I Samuel 3:1-21

We know from this text that the Word of the Lord was rare when Samuel was a boy. This would imply that at other times it wasn't rare. Is this God's will? What would cause it to be rare?

Eli's sons, Hophni and Phinehas brought evil into the house of the Lord by perverting the sacrifices and committing immorality. Their father did nothing to correct the situation.

Although Samuel ministered to the Lord, he didn't know the voice of God. During the night, he hears a voice calling him. It wasn't a special time of prayer or fasting. Rather, it was a normal day. He heard an audible voice, but Eli didn't hear it.

Since the Word of the Lord was rare, Eli didn't think it was from the Lord until Samuel came to him the third time. He then instructed Samuel to say, "Speak Lord for your servant hears."

When Samuel did as he was told, the Lord spoke to him further. Until we respond to what God has said, He usually says nothing else. It is necessary to respond to both the rhema (spoken) word and also the logos (written) word.

Eli asks Samuel what the Lord said and tells him to hold nothing back. The message is about judgment on the house of Eli. The Word of the Lord does not seem to move Eli to action.

How do you respond when you don't hear?

1.  Are you apathetic?
2.  Do you respond with urgency and harass God until He answers?
3.  To you respond with certainty and stay in faith for what He has already said?

When you do what God says to do, you will hear more from Him.

Sunday Morning Series - Learn to Discern - When Good Becomes a Distraction

Text:  Luke 10:38-42

Different Priorities

Both Martha and Mary already believe Jesus is the Christ.

Martha serves everyone as Jesus teaches. Luke speaks of it as a distraction. She is just as busy with natural things now as she was before she believed. We can get busy with religious things:

Outwardly serving
Inwardly criticizing

Are you a Martha?

1.  I can't just sit and hear the Word. I have to be doing something else.
2.  I get mad at others, who just sit and listen.
3.  I find it hard to pray and worship and let other things go.

Jesus says to Martha that she's:

1.  Worried - to have a distracting care
2.  Troubled - They don't only distract you but also trouble you.
3.  Many things bother her.

Sunday Morning Series - Learn to Discern - Servants or Slaves?

Text:  2 Kings 3

Jesus was never enslaved by guilt or duty. He served others in response to the direction of God, His Father.

Jehoshaphat was one of the best kings of Judah, while Ahab was the worst king of Israel. For some unknown reason, Jehoshaphat made an alliance through marriage with Ahab's family. What is this Godly king thinking?

Ahab convinces Jehoshaphat to go to war against the Moabites. Instead of traveling the short route across the Jordan River, they go through Edom to pick up more warriors. The only problem was they didn't bring water or food for the journey, and there wasn't any available in the desert.

In Verse 10 Ahab is blaming God for their predicament. God didn't mess up. They did. Hang around with the wrong people, and they will feed you with wrong ideas about God.

Jehoshaphat calls for a prophet of God. While the first prophet came to them, Ahab knew Elisha would never come to meet them. They went to his place, and Elisha says to Ahab, "What have I to do with you?" If it wasn't for the fact Jehoshaphat was with Ahab, he would never have even looked at Ahab. He seeks God and gives them the answers they need.

Why does Jehoshaphat join himself with Israel? He may feel like he is supposed to or obligated because they are now related. Maybe guilt is used.

Four ways people respond to you:

1.  They are open to what you say, and they do it.
2.  They seem open to what you say but then neglect it.
3.  They seem resistant to what you say but go and think on it.
4.  They are closed to what you say.

Which ones is it wise to put your resources into?

Because of Jehoshaphat's relationship with God, he put God and the prophet in a place neither of them wanted to be. Jesus told the disciples when a place rejected them they should shake the dust from their feet and move on. He spoke in parables, so people who would not receive His words wouldn't understand.

King Jehoshaphat wasted precious time, resources, and almost lost his life by aligning himself with evil King Ahab. His decision led to much trouble for himself and his family.

Sunday Morning, Series - Not to be Served

Text:  Matthew 20:1-28

In verses 1-16 of this chapter, we have Jesus telling a story about a man who hires laborers for a denarius a day. At the third hour, he hires more for an undisclosed fair wage. This continues until he hires people near the end of the workday.

When it comes time for payment, he gives the laborers hired last one denarious. Those hired for the agreed-upon denarius a day think they should get more. They complain when they also get a denarius. These laborers came with the attitude to serve but then expected to be served.

While this may seem like God treats people equally, we have other examples in Scripture where people were given different amounts according to their abilities (parable of the talents).
