Text: I Samuel 3:1-21
We know from this text that the Word of the Lord was rare when Samuel was a boy. This would imply that at other times it wasn't rare. Is this God's will? What would cause it to be rare?
Eli's sons, Hophni and Phinehas brought evil into the house of the Lord by perverting the sacrifices and committing immorality. Their father did nothing to correct the situation.
Although Samuel ministered to the Lord, he didn't know the voice of God. During the night, he hears a voice calling him. It wasn't a special time of prayer or fasting. Rather, it was a normal day. He heard an audible voice, but Eli didn't hear it.
Since the Word of the Lord was rare, Eli didn't think it was from the Lord until Samuel came to him the third time. He then instructed Samuel to say, "Speak Lord for your servant hears."
When Samuel did as he was told, the Lord spoke to him further. Until we respond to what God has said, He usually says nothing else. It is necessary to respond to both the rhema (spoken) word and also the logos (written) word.
Eli asks Samuel what the Lord said and tells him to hold nothing back. The message is about judgment on the house of Eli. The Word of the Lord does not seem to move Eli to action.
How do you respond when you don't hear?
1. Are you apathetic?
2. Do you respond with urgency and harass God until He answers?
3. To you respond with certainty and stay in faith for what He has already said?
When you do what God says to do, you will hear more from Him.
