Text: Numbers 13:1 - 14:10
The spies were sent into the Promised Land with a specific assignment:
1. Find out the strength and numbers of the people.
2. The condition of the land and cities.
3. Bring back some of the fruit.
Whenever an assignment is given, patience is one of the qualities that keeps us on track to get it done.
When they returned, they gave their report: (and more):
1. The people are strong.
2. The land is flowing with milk and honey.
3. They brought back a large cluster of grapes that required two men to carry it on a pole, as well as other fruit.
That part of the report was within the guidelines of their assignment. Unfortunately, they told the people we cannot overcome them. We were like grasshoppers in their sight. Joshua and Caleb disagreed, but the people sided with the other spies. They allowed fear to take control and forgot all that God had done for them. God had commanded them to take the land, but they refused to obey.
Their reaction shows their faith was not in God's Word but in circumstances. They cried all night and then criticized their leaders. Self-pity drove them to the point of wanting to stone Moses and Aaron.
Years later, when the spies spoke with Rahab, she told them how afraid they were of the Israelites because of all the things God had done for them. They didn't view Israel as grasshoppers but as a formidable enemy.
The people didn't go through any of the tests they faced in faith,so patience wasn't produced. No patience, no endurance! Thus, they were unable to handle any opposition, persecution, or trouble.
Numbers 14:11 - God considered their disobedience as rejection. He was angry and wanted to destroy them. Instead, they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years until the next generation reached maturity. They were the ones who entered the Promised Land.
