Text: Matthew 12:43-45 and Various
Last week, we saw the story of the man delivered from a demon. His house (body) became "empty, swept, and put in order," but it didn't stay that way. The demon returned, and upon seeing the condition went and brought seven even more evil than himself into the man.
In order to make a change permanent, you cannot just take away what you don't like or want. You have to add something to fill its place.
God promised Abram (later called, "Abraham") that his descendants would be as numerous as the sands of the sea and the stars in the sky. At the time, Abram was 75 years old. He and his wife were long past having any hope of bringing a child into the world.
God began dealing with Abram. First, He instructed him to leave his country and follow God to a place he didn't know. At various times, He reiterated the promise. For a while, Abram was skeptical and even tried to help God out by producing a son, Ishmael, with the servant Hagar.
At one point, God changes Abram's name to Abraham which means, "father of many." So every time someone calls him Abram, he must correct them. He is constantly re-stating the promise when he says his name. He's hearing the meaning over and over again. God is changing his conversation.
