Text: Ephesians 1:15-19
Three things are needed when asking God for something:
1. Does God have it?
2. Is God willing to give it?
3. What is required to receive it?
When we find a promise in the Word of God, it contains all of these ingredients. We can either pray the promise or pray based on the promise.
Tip: When looking up the promises of God, use your favorite search engine instead of a concordance. The word, "promise," doesn't appear in most of the scriptures. You'll find better results if you search for "promises of God."
In our text today, Paul prays a prayer. He starts off with:
1. "After I heard your faith..." - When praying for others, your prayers will be different for believers and non-believers.
2. "And your love for all the saints..." Christians not walking in love will limit what you can pray for them.
3. "...may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him"
This is not something we tap into now and then, but this spirit to be with us.
Wisdom - knowing what to do with what we know.
Revelation - Insight into things we thought we knew, but after the revelation we see how much we didn't know.
Knowledge of Him - Not this world or the things in it, but Him. See I Corinthians 2:9-10, 14, I John 2:27, Isaiah 11:2, and Ephesians 3:3.
