Text: Matthew 1:1-28 and Various
How does great revelation from God get turned into something far less than great or even foolishness by us?
The religious leaders came to Jesus for the purpose of testing Him. We're not talking about the kind of testing that determines what a person knows but rather the kind that seeks to entrap. Their approach had a bad motive and attitude. These two things if tainted will always produce something off or even completely false.
When people come into a discussion with a selfish motive and the pride of one who thinks they are right, what will happen? Notice, Jesus leaves them feeling no obligation or reason to show them anything. Just because someone asks us a question, doesn't mean we have to answer them.
In Matthew 16:5-12, Jesus is teaching them. He turns to His disciples and gives a warning to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees. Their minds were focused on something else. They were responsible to bring bread, but had forgotten to do so. We tend to hear things based on what our mind and spirit focus on. This was a great revelation Jesus was imparting but a pretty simple one. They didn't get it.
"Then they understood..." Do we spend time seeking to understand the revelations God gives us? (Daniel 8:15 & 10:12) Daniel did two important things: 1) He set his heart to understand, and 2) He humbled himself.
How do we both receive revelation and understand it?
