Sunday Morning Series - Under the Surface - Getting In Sync at Christmas
Text://Matthew 1:18-2:12 & Various
In Luke 1:26-38, we see the angel Gabriel appear to Mary. Gabriel always carries important messages from God.
Mary wasn't troubled by the angel's appearance, but wondered what his words meant. The Jewish people were well aware of Isaiah's prophecy about the birth of Messiah. She knew there was more to the angel's message than a commendation from God. Just because she had questions didn't mean she was doubting what he said.
Bethrothal in Mary and Joseph's time was much like being engaged today. It was a little different in that they were considered as good as married, but they did not live together.
Joseph was an honorable man. When Mary told him about the angel's visitation and that she was carrying the Messiah, he was troubled. He finally made a decision that he would put her away quietly and not marry her. He had no desire to see her stoned or shamed in front of the whole community.
As he slept, an angel came to him in a dream and told him not to be afraid but to take Mary as his wife. He immediately obeyed and married her. In those days, weddings meant a big feast that often lasted for days. The fact they married so quickly no doubt gave rise to speculation. Both Joseph and Mary put their lives and reputations on the line to obey God.
There are people who don't believe the story of the virgin birth. Yet, the Bible clearly teaches that while Eve sinned first, it was Adam's sin that brought the curse down upon the human race. The sin nature is passed on through the seed of the man. In order for Jesus to be born free of the curse, He could not have a human father.
When people don't believe the Bible, it's because they have accepted something else as truth. If we want to be in sync with God, believing His Word is essential.

Sunday Morning Series - Under the Surface - Out of Sync and in Trouble
Text: Numbers 12:1-16
Chapter 12 begins with the word, "Then..." After the complaining and despising of Chapter 11, Miriam and Aaron murmur against Moses. Perhaps as leaders, they thought they were exempt from consequences. Most likely, they thought they were okay doing this because they were right. When we are out of sync with God, even doing what is blatantly wrong will seem good to us.
In Numbers 12:2-3, they ask, "Has the Lord only..." Where did that thought come from? Why does it sound familiar? (Think of the Garden of Eden.) The focus seems to be on what the Lord has done, but actually it is about their role and their dissatisfaction with it.
This is the goal of the enemy:
1. He gets us to not be content with what we have.
2. He get us to covet what we don't have.
3. We get consumed with obtaining whatever it is we don't have.
How did God respond to their murmuring against Moses? To hear the entire message, please visit our website and click on the Media Tab to access this Sunday's teaching.

Sunday Morning Series - Under the Surface - Out of Sync - Part II
Text: Numbers 11:1-3
Last week, we noted the three areas we can align ourselves with:
1. God through the Holy Spirit
2. Our flesh
3. Satan's kingdom.
How do we know if we're out of sync with God?
When we complain about...
1. Notice it was the people NOT Moses that were complaining. The Israelites complained when there was too much water (the Red Sea), when there wasn't any water (in the desert), about the food God provided, etc. They complained so much that the Lord's anger was aroused and fire consumed some on the outskirts of the group. The people cried out to Moses, so Moses prayed.
God has labeled certain things as harmful and to be avoided. He also said to hold onto what is good. In scripture we're told to rejoice always, and again I say rejoice. If we're complaining, we're not rejoicing.
When we despise blessings...
1. Exodus 12:38 tells us they were a mixed multitude. People from other nations were in the crowd, not just Israelites. The people had such intense cravings for meat that they wept. Although they had begged God to deliver them from Egyptian slavery, now they were "remembering" the various foods in Egypt. Have we ever had a situation where we remember things as better than what they were?
The thing you yield to will lead you to weep or rejoice, to be angry or pleased, to have hope or despair, etc.
