Text://Matthew 1:18-2:12 & Various
In Luke 1:26-38, we see the angel Gabriel appear to Mary. Gabriel always carries important messages from God.
Mary wasn't troubled by the angel's appearance, but wondered what his words meant. The Jewish people were well aware of Isaiah's prophecy about the birth of Messiah. She knew there was more to the angel's message than a commendation from God. Just because she had questions didn't mean she was doubting what he said.
Bethrothal in Mary and Joseph's time was much like being engaged today. It was a little different in that they were considered as good as married, but they did not live together.
Joseph was an honorable man. When Mary told him about the angel's visitation and that she was carrying the Messiah, he was troubled. He finally made a decision that he would put her away quietly and not marry her. He had no desire to see her stoned or shamed in front of the whole community.
As he slept, an angel came to him in a dream and told him not to be afraid but to take Mary as his wife. He immediately obeyed and married her. In those days, weddings meant a big feast that often lasted for days. The fact they married so quickly no doubt gave rise to speculation. Both Joseph and Mary put their lives and reputations on the line to obey God.
There are people who don't believe the story of the virgin birth. Yet, the Bible clearly teaches that while Eve sinned first, it was Adam's sin that brought the curse down upon the human race. The sin nature is passed on through the seed of the man. In order for Jesus to be born free of the curse, He could not have a human father.
When people don't believe the Bible, it's because they have accepted something else as truth. If we want to be in sync with God, believing His Word is essential.
