Sunday Morning Service - Boundaries - Assumptions: That Can't Be Right
Text: Genesis 11:31-13:18
God speaks to Abram (later Abraham) and tells him to do four things:
1. Get out of your country (Ur of the Chaldees).
2. Get away from your family
3. And from your father's house
4. Go to a land that I will (future) show you.
Abram has already abandoned the idols of his country to follow God. Now, he's being asked to do these four things. God tells him:
1. I will make you a great nation.
2. I will bless you and make your name great.
3. And you shall be a blessing.
Abram's father, Terah, takes his son and the whole household, and they all travel to Haran. We don't know exactly how long Abram stays there, but it's long enough for them to accumulate people and possessions.
Knowing that God has His eye on Abram, the enemy tries to thwart God's plan. He will:
1. Try to get him to stay in his homeland.
2. Try to keep him tied to his father's house.
3. Keep him away from the Promised Land.
Even though it took awhile for Abram to come into full obedience, God flowed through him as much as He could. Abraham made some assumptions that led to deception and delay.

Sunday Morning Series - Boundaries - Endurance
Text: Acts 17:1-15 and various
In Matthew 13:18-23, we have the Parable of the Sower. The second type of ground is described as, "stony." It's characterized by all outward show but no root system. This type of person is unable to endure tribulation and persecution.
In Acts 17:1-15, we see the people at Berea were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica. They received the word and went to the scriptures to see if what they were told was true. By doing this, they were establishing a strong root system that held up when the Jews from Thessalonica came to stir up trouble.
To hear the entire message, please visit our website and click on the Media Tab. You can listen online, download it to your MP3 player, or podcast.
If you're visiting in the area or desiring a closer relationship with the Lord, we invite you to our Sunday Morning Service at 10:00 AM. The children have Super Church starting at 11:00 AM and are taught Bible precepts on their level.

Sunday Morning Series - Boundaries - The Attacks Upon Us
Text: II Chronicles 14:1 - 16:14
The enemy doesn't care if we go to the right or the left as long as we are off God's path.
King Asa, of Judah, had a father and grandfather (Solomon), who brought idolatry into the nation. However, Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. He removed the altars and high places from all the cities of Judah.
There was no war during these years, but he still prepared the people and trained them to fight. He knew that eventually an enemy would attack.
The devil will try to weaken you and pull you back from your purpose. He does this three ways:
1. Distraction
2. Outright attack
3. Join us next week for this one.
Asa had a loyal or perfect heart all his days. He was obedient to the Lord. However, he strayed from the path at some point and resisted correction.

Sunday Morning Series - Boundaries - The Rejection of Wisdom
Text: I Kings 12:1-24
After King Solomon died, his son, Rehoboam, took over. While Solomon was alive, he built the temple and many other buildings. The people had to devote a month of their year to working on his projects, as well as paying heavy taxes to fund them.
The people from the northern tribes approached Rehoboam and requested that he ease their burden. Rehoboam asked his father's counselors for advice, and they told him to listen to the people. They said if he would serve the people now, they would serve him in the future.
Rehoboam wasn't satisfied with their answer and went to his friends. They gave him the opposite advice, telling him to increase the people's burdens. He tossed aside the wise advice of the elder counselors and did what his peers suggested.
His foolishness resulted in the country being split. The people refused to acknowledge him as their king.

Sunday Morning Series - Boundaries - Self Limitations
Text: I Samuel 14:1-23, Joshua 1:1-9
Have you ever had a room or place in your house you wouldn't or couldn't enter? What is it that started that feeling? A story? A sound? A perception?
Whatever it is or was it ignited fear in us, which always leads to limited action or even complete inaction.
When Moses died, God informed Joshua that he would lead the Children of Israel into the Promised Land. He instructed Joshua to be strong and of good courage, that He (God) would be with him.
Where do self-imposed boundaries originate?
1. Perceptions - what other people think
2. Ignorance
3. Guilt - What we think is in the mind of others. Will people disapprove of our actions? For example, if a widow or widower marries soon after their loved one passes away, will that be viewed in a negative light?
4. Self-confidence - If I'm not confident, I'll only do so much.
What limitations have you imposed on yourself that God has not? To hear the entire message, please visit our website and click on the Media Tab. You can listen online, download it to your MP3 player, or podcast.

Sunday Morning Series - Boundaries - The Unusual
Text: Acts 19:1-20
Paul asks the believers if they'd received the Holy Spirit since they believed. There's controversy today with many saying you receive the Holy Spirit when you receive Jesus as your Savior. In Acts 2, those who were already believers gathered in the Upper Room to await the coming of the Holy Spirit. The scriptures plainly teach there's an infilling that occurs after salvation. The evidence of this infilling is speaking in tongues.
Paul made it clear that he spoke in tongues. There is a difference between the infilling of the Holy Spirit and the gift of tongues, listed as a gift of the Holy Spirit.
1. The first is your prayer language and an empowerment for ministry. We often don't know how to pray, but the Holy Spirit can pray the perfect prayer through us.
2. The gift of tongues operates in the assembly and is accompanied by the gift of interpretation of tongues. This may be either a known language the speaker does not know or understand or an unknown tongue. There are many instances where an unbeliever hears a message from God or hears Him praised in his native language. Again, in Acts 2, those who heard the believers speaking in tongues recognized these unlearned people were praising God in a language they did not know, but the hearers understood.
When people started speaking evil of the way, Paul departed from them and withdrew the disciples. He didn't argue or waste time with those who hardened their hearts.
In Acts 19:11-12, it states, "Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul." (Verse 11) Handkerchiefs and aprons were brought and the anointing from Paul went into them. They were brought to those who were homebound, frail, and unable to travel. The scriptures state that the illnesses were caused by demons. The anointing freed them, and they were permanently cured.
Many people do this today, yet this was not a common practice. Scripture calls it, "unusual."
In Acts 19:13-20, we hear about some itinerant Jewish exorcists deciding to copy Jesus and Paul. The seven sons of Sceva (sons of a Jewish high priest) were not the only ones going about performing exorcisms. These men overstepped their boundaries and ended up being attacked and fleeing from the demonized person.

Sunday Morning Series - Boundaries - What Happens When Evil Steps Over the Line?
Text: Luke 8:26-39 & Mark 5:1-20
When a neighbor or stranger comes on your property and begins using your shed to store his possessions without your permission, you don't just sit back and allow it. You either confront him or call the police. That neighbor has crossed a boundary. Yet, when the enemy crosses our borders with all manner of evil we don't take action.
Why?
When my wife and I were first married, we had some differences. One of them involved salt and pepper shakers. I grew up with the salt in the shaker with the most holes, while hers was the opposite. The first time I went to put salt on my food, out came pepper. What??? I didn't see the difference. Sometimes we have trouble telling the difference between good and evil.
In these passages, Jesus gets out of the boat and is greeted by a man with an unclean spirit. Mark uses the word, "immediately." He uses it throughout his gospel 40 times. That's a lot for a small book.
Luke 8:30 tells us there was a legion of demons in this man. A legion in the Roman army was about 6,000 men. That's a lot of demons. We don't see any other example of that number in scripture (other than this particular story). The demons were afraid Jesus would judge them, that they'd overstepped their boundaries, and would send them into the abyss. Jesus gave them permission to enter a herd of pigs.
Now, Jews weren't supposed to keep pigs. They were unclean animals, but the profit they brought was probably an attraction. Maybe they had others take care of them. They were upset when their pigs ran off a cliff and died. It's like the drug dealer that says he sells the stuff but doesn't take it himself. Helping others sin makes one as guilty as the person who actually does it.
Just think, this man had been screaming, running around naked, breaking any chains put on him, for a long time. He was a menace to society. Yet, when Jesus freed him and the man sat clothed and in his right mind, the people were afraid of Jesus!

Sunday Morning Series - Boundaries - Beyond
Text: 2 Thessalonians 2:1-3:6
The Thessalonians were enduring severe persecution at the time of this writing. Someone had sent word or a letter that Paul changed his mind and now thought they were in the Great Tribulation. (The Day of the Lord is another word for the Great Tribulation.)
Paul writes this letter to them to correct their thinking. When the enemy wants to get us, he sows thoughts:
1. These are based on what has or is happening.
2. Or what we anticipate happening from what we are told or can imagine.
3. Often, reports are twisted to lead one to an obvious conclusion.
Our enemy's work is often made easier by our tendency to believe a bad report. We seem to more readily believe bad reports than good reports.
2 Thessalonians 2:3-12 - Paul tells them, "Let no one deceive you by any means for that day will not come unless..." This doctrine or teaching has boundaries. The passage also talks about the falling away. There are two uses of the word, "apostasia," in the New Testament. When combined with a definitive article (the), it's talking about a specific event.
Is there going to be a great falling away from the church before the Rapture or does this refer to something else? To hear the full message, we invite you to visit our website and click on the media tab. You can listen online, download it to your MP3 player, or podcast.

Sunday Morning Series - Boundaries - Sources
Text: Matthew 16:1-23
If we allow our focus to move away from Jesus, we'll view and hear spiritual truth in a wrong way. When Jesus spoke to the disciples in Matthew 16, warning them to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, they thought he was talking about how they forgot to bring bread. Leaven represented sin.
In Daniel 8:15 & 10:12, Daniel sought to understand what the messenger from God was saying. Do we spend time seeking to understand? Assumptions and presumptions come without much or even any understanding. Great revelation with weak understanding will produce foolish conclusions.
