Quotable Quote

"God will never direct us to be prideful, arrogant and unforgiving, immoral or slothful or full of fear. We step into those things because we are insensitive to the leadership of the Holy Spirit within us." - Charles Stanley

NEW Sunday Morning Series - Learn to Discern - Many Voices

Text:  Proverbs 20:27

Every person is a spirit whether they are born again or not. The difference is where each will spend eternity. We are a spirit. We have a soul, and we live in a body.

We hear from 3 directions: God, others, and our own minds. Just because you hear something doesn't mean it's from God. Other people and our own minds can be influenced by God or Satan's kingdom, as well as peer pressure, good or bad desires, etc.

God sends His influence by:

1.  His Word
2.  His Spirit
3.  His Servants

Satan's kingdom sends its influence by:

1.  Fear - afraid of doing something or not doing something, which leaves us paralyzed.
2.  Pressure - others urging us to go in a particular direction
3.  False doctrine - will cause us to make a wrong move

I can also be led by my own desires.

How do we determine whether a leading is from a bad source?

1)  When the leading comes from my own mind, the cure is found in Romans 12:1-2 and Joshua 1:8-9.

2)  When they come from others, I need to:

      A)  Determine the source
      B)  Determine the content
      C)  Determine the benefits

When Peter rebuked Jesus in Mark 8:27-33 because He spoke about his crucifixion, Jesus identified the source of the words as Satan. The content was not in line with the Word, and the results would not bring forth God's will.

You have the freedom to make any decision - either listening to God, others, or Satan - but you will have to bear the consequences of your choice.

Sunday Morning Series - A Heart Condition - Being Right in the Eyes of the Lord

Text:  I Kings 15:4-5 and Various

Today, we're finishing the lesson we began last week. The scriptures tell us that Asa had a loyal heart all the days of his life. (2 Chronicles 15:1-17) Yet, he didn't consult the Lord when he became diseased in his feet. He also threw God's prophet in jail.

We could speculate about why God considered him loyal even though he took these actions later in life, but only the Word of God can give us the accurate answers. We're not to seek light from sources apart from the Word.

In I Kings 15:11 & 4-5 - Asa's life is compared to David's life. The only blot on David's record was the entire Bathsheba matter. However, in 2 Samuel 6, we saw that he tried to bring the ark back to Jerusalem on a cart. He probably got this idea from the Philistines, who sent the ark back to Israel using that method. Another instance where David failed was his numbering (census) of Israel.

During the Bathsheba incident, David not only sinned, but also compounded it by trying to cover it up. In the other instances, he repented quickly and did what he could to make things right.

Application: When the Word does not plainly tell us a matter, we look for light from other places in scripture. Our repetition of sin is not as much a problem as our resistance to His correction.
